Book excerpt: This Volume 5 in a continuing series represents the compilation of papers presented at the International Symposium on Analytical Calorimetry as part of the 185th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, Seattle, Washington, March 20-25th. 1983. A much broader variety of topics are covered than in pre vious volumes, due to the growth in the field of Thermal Analysis. Specific topics covering such techniques as differential scanning calorimetry, combined thermogravimetric procedures, dynamic mechan ical analysis and a variety of novel kinetic analyses are covered. A wide range of material types are included in this volume such as polymers (alloys, blends and composites), fossil fuels, biological products, liquid crystals and inorganic materials. The co-editors of this volume would like to thank all the contributors for their efforts in conforming to the manuscript requirements, and for being prompt in the preparation. We would also like to thank those who presided over sessions during the course of the symposium; Professor Anselm C. Griffin, Professor Roger S. Porter and Dr. Edith A. Turi.

Within this domain, advances in instrumentation permit the application of quantitative calorimetry to the full spectrum of modern materials. This can be illustrated perhaps no better than by the set of contributions which make up this Volume 4 of Analytical Calorimetry. The research supported in this fourth volume of Analytical Calorimetry covers a wide variety of topics. The range indicates the sophistication which thermal analysis is reaching and additional ly the ever-widening applications that are being developed. The contributions to the Volume represent, in part, papers presented before the Division of Analytical Chemistry at the Fourth Symposium on Analytical Chemistry held at the 172nd National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, August 29 - September 3, 1976. Several additional key contributions are included by prominent workers in the field. Julian F. Johnson Roger S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calorimetry is one of the oldest areas of physical chemistry. The date on which calorimetry came into being may be taken as 13 June 1783, the day on which Lavoisier and Laplace presented a contribution entitled ,,Memoire de la Chaleur“ at a session of the Academie Française. Throughout the existence of calorimetry, many new methods have been developed and the measuring techniques have been improved. At p- sent, numerous laboratories worldwide continue to focus attention on the development and applications of calorimetry, and a number of com- nies specialize in the production of calorimeters. The calorimeter is an instrument that allows heat effects in it to be determined by directly measurement of temperature. Accordingly, to determine a heat effect, it is necessary to establish the relationship - tween the heat effect generated and the quantity measured in the ca- rimeter. It is this relationship that unambiguously determines the mathematical model of the calorimeter. Depending on the type of ca- rimeter applied, the accuracy required, and the conditions of heat and mass transfer that prevail in the device, the relationship between the measured and generated quantities can assume different mathematical forms.

The general techniques and methodology are covered extensively in Volume 1, along with the fundamental physicochemical background needed. Consequently the subsequent volumes dwell on the applications of these powerful and versatile methods, while assuming a familiarity with the techniques. Volume 2 covers major areas of inorganic materials and some related general topics, e.g., catalysis, geochemistry, and the preservation of art. The chapters are written by established practitioners in the field with the intent of presenting a sampling of the how thermoanalytical and calorimetric methods have contributed to progress in their respective areas. The chapters are not intended as exhaustive reviews of the topics, but rather, to illustrate to the readers what has been achieved and to encourage them to consider extending these applications further into their domains of interest. - Provides an appreciation for how thermal methods can be applied to inorganic materials and processes. - Provides an insight into the versatility of thermal methods. - Shares the experiences of experts in a variety of different fields. - A valuable reference source covering a huge area of materials coverage.

Thermodynamic and kinetic principles are discussed along with the instrumentation and methodology associated with thermoanalytical and calorimetric techniques. The purpose is to collect the discussion of these general principles and minimize redundancies in the subsequent volumes that are concerned with the applications of these principles and methods. More unique methods, which pertain to specific processes or materials, are covered in later volumes.

Book excerpt: MTDSC provides a step-change increase in the power of calorimetry to characterize virtually all polymer systems including curing systems, blends and semicrystalline polymers. It enables hidden transitions to be revealed, miscibility to be accurately assessed, and phases and interfaces in complex blends to be quantified. It also enables crystallinity in complex systems to be measured and provides new insights into melting behaviour. All of this is achieved by a simple modification of conventional DSC. In 1992 a new calorimetric technique was introduced that superimposed a small modulation on top of the conventional linear temperature program typically used in differential scanning calorimetry. This was combined with a method of data analysis that enabled the sample’s response to the linear component of the temperature program to be separated from its response to the periodic component. In this way, for the first time, a signal equivalent to that of conventional DSC was obtained simultaneously with a measure of the sample’s heat capacity from the modulation. The new information this provided sparked a revolution in scanning calorimetry by enabling new insights to be gained into almost all aspects of polymer characteristics. This book provides both a basic and advanced treatment of the theory of the technique followed by a detailed exposition of its application to reacting systems, blends and semicrystalline polymers by the leaders in all of these fields. It is an essential text for anybody interested in calorimetry or polymer characterization, especially if they have found that conventional DSC cannot help them with their problems.
