Book excerpt: The mining of aggregate is vital to preparing concrete and building constructions; however, there are some known impacts that aggregate mining can cause on both hydrologic and ecological systems. This study incorporates field and modeling studies to understand the potential influence of mining on groundwater and surface-water interacting hydrologic systems. The study site is an active, 265-acre mining site located in Washtenaw County, Michigan, which has two artificial lakes. The goal was to develop a three-dimensional hydrologic model, HydroGeoSphere (HGS), for the mining site and apply it to evaluate the impacts of mining activities such as quarry expansion and dewatering on local groundwater and surface-water systems. To protect the wetlands around the area, there was a desire to maintain a stable water surface elevation for the Lakes throughout the expansion. The model was used to simulate both surface and subsurface waters in the site and their hydrologic dynamics as responses to weather or climatic variations and mining expansions described above, which changed the lake bathymetry. The model domain encompassed 2,038 acres of land, which has a pseudo rectangle shape bounded by the Raisin River being the boundary on the east side and no-flow boundaries along the remaining three sides. The model used a finite-element mesh generated with AlgoMesh software, which consists of nine vertical layers and a total of 2778 nodes and 5177 elements. Primary input data to the HGS model include land-surface elevations, weather data (daily precipitation and temperature) obtained from a nearby weather station, potential evapotranspiration values calculated with a Penman-Monteith method and geology and bathymetry data from field investigations. The model was satisfactorily calibrated against water level data observed in the two lakes and four water-table monitoring wells, spanning a period from January 2018 to December 2020. After calibration, the model was used to explore how the mining expansion would affect the hydrology on site. Specifically, influences of three hypothetical vertical expansions (5 m. 10 m, and 15 m) along with the same horizontal expansion of 46-acres in the active mining site were tested. Simulation results show that the expansions of all three scenarios would not cause dramatic changes on either the surface-water or groundwater levels in the vicinity. Specifically, the deepest 15-m vertical expansion would only lower the water levels by 0.03 m and 0.28 m in the two lakes and 0.19-0.32 m in four monitoring wells, suggesting a limited or insignificant impact of mining expansion on the groundwater resources and wetlands.

When analyzing the flow regime and its characteristics, traditional numerical methods designed for soil-like materials may not always apply. In the present thesis, the two-dimensional finite element code FlowD was developed to analyze steady-state seepage through fractured rock masses, under saturated conditions. The program provides the user with two modelling options: porous (soil) materials, or fractured rock masses. The double-porosity model was incorporated in the code, in order to better model flow through anisotropic, heterogeneous fractured rock masses, where Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions can apply. FlowD program calculates total pressure head, flow gradients and velocities within the specified domain. Drains, drainage galleries and wells, as well as aquifer recharge can be simulated. A real large-scale case study, with complex geological features has been simulated in order to demonstrate the application of the double porosity model. Three different scenarios have been modeled for the same slope, which are natural groundwater regime, vertical well simulation, and drainage galleries simulation. The results show good agreement with the predictions of both the consultant and the mine's engineering division." --

Book excerpt: Aquifer pumping tests conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the John Evans Site (North Penn 6 Superfund Site, Lansdale, PA) produced anomalous water level changes in observations wells. In some observations wells, changes were not radially symmetric, and more distant wells had greater drawdown than proximal wells. Triassic sandstones and shales at the site are tilted, and contain a large number of fractures, which may affect groundwater movement. Therefore, the computer code FRAC3DVS, which allows simulation of fractures, was used to develop a conceptual model of these anomalies, which was generally consistent with hydrogeologic properties. Both steady state and transient models were constructed. Hydrologic properties and the number, location, orientation, and aperture of fractures were varied in order to simulate the results of the aquifer pumping test. The steady state modeling showed that the range of influence of a few connected fractures created deviations in the flow field on the scale of 10s of meters, similar to the site scale. Thus a simplified network of fractures was used to model the flow anomalies. Five transient simulations from the site-specific model are presented to demonstrate the calibration process and goodness of fit. The best fit, having a root mean square error of 0.07 m, was obtained using a model with three continuous dipping fracture sets with an aperture of 1.0E-4 m and a matrix hydraulic conductivity of 1.2E-9 m/s. The transient modeling showed that anomalies were produced when tilted fractures that only intersect some wells are used and when the contrast between the fracture and matrix hydraulic conductivity is high.
