Book excerpt: This research monograph concerns the Nevanlinna factorization of analytic functions smooth, in a sense, up to the boundary. The peculiar properties of such a factorization are investigated for the most common classes of Lipschitz-like analytic functions. The book sets out to create a satisfactory factorization theory as exists for Hardy classes. The reader will find, among other things, the theorem on smoothness for the outer part of a function, the generalization of the theorem of V.P. Havin and F.A. Shamoyan also known in the mathematical lore as the unpublished Carleson-Jacobs theorem, the complete description of the zero-set of analytic functions continuous up to the boundary, generalizing the classical Carleson-Beurling theorem, and the structure of closed ideals in the new wide range of Banach algebras of analytic functions. The first three chapters assume the reader has taken a standard course on one complex variable; the fourth chapter requires supplementary papers cited there. The monograph addresses both final year students and doctoral students beginning to work in this area, and researchers who will find here new results, proofs and methods.

Book excerpt: A certain class of functions $C$ on an interval is called quasianalytic if any function in $C$ is uniquely determined by the values of its derivatives at any point. The obvious question, then, is how to reconstruct such a function from the sequence of values of its derivatives at a certain point. In order to answer that question, Badalyan combines a study of expanding functions in generalized factorial series with a study of quasipower series. The theory of quasipower series and its application to the reconstruction problem are explained in detail in this research monograph. Along the way other, related problems are solved, such as Borel's hypothesis that no quasianalytic function can have all positive derivatives at a point. While the treatment is technical, the theory is developed chapter by chapter in detail, and the first chapter is of an introductory nature. The quasipower series technique explained here provides the means to extend the previously known results and elucidates their nature in the most relevant manner. This method also allows for thorough investigation of numerous problems of the theory of functions of quasianalytic classes by graduate students and research mathematicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of real analytic functions is one of the oldest in mathe matical analysis. Today it is encountered early in ones mathematical training: the first taste usually comes in calculus. While most work ing mathematicians use real analytic functions from time to time in their work, the vast lore of real analytic functions remains obscure and buried in the literature. It is remarkable that the most accessible treatment of Puiseux's theorem is in Lefschetz's quite old Algebraic Geometry, that the clearest discussion of resolution of singularities for real analytic manifolds is in a book review by Michael Atiyah, that there is no comprehensive discussion in print of the embedding prob lem for real analytic manifolds. We have had occasion in our collaborative research to become ac quainted with both the history and the scope of the theory of real analytic functions. It seems both appropriate and timely for us to gather together this information in a single volume. The material presented here is of three kinds. The elementary topics, covered in Chapter 1, are presented in great detail. Even results like a real ana lytic inverse function theorem are difficult to find in the literature, and we take pains here to present such topics carefully. Topics of middling difficulty, such as separate real analyticity, Puiseux series, the FBI transform, and related ideas (Chapters 2-4), are covered thoroughly but rather more briskly.

Book excerpt: This monograph proposes a new classification of periodic functions, based on the concept of generalized derivative, defined by introducing multiplicators and shifts of the argument into the Fourier series of the original function. This approach permits the classification of a wide range of functions, including those of which the Fourier series may diverge in integral metric, smooth functions, and infinitely differentiable functions, including analytical and entire ones. These newly introduced classes are then investigated using the traditional problems of the theory of approximation. The results thus obtained offer a new way to look at classical statements for the approximation of differentiable functions, and suggest possibilities to discover new effects. Audience: valuable reading for experts in the field of mathematical analysis and researchers and graduate students interested in the applications of the theory of approximation and Fourier series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume considers various methods for constructing cubature and quadrature formulas of arbitrary degree. These formulas are intended to approximate the calculation of multiple and conventional integrals over a bounded domain of integration. The latter is assumed to have a piecewise-smooth boundary and to be arbitrary in other aspects. Particular emphasis is placed on invariant cubature formulas and those for a cube, a simplex, and other polyhedra. Here, the techniques of functional analysis and partial differential equations are applied to the classical problem of numerical integration, to establish many important and deep analytical properties of cubature formulas. The prerequisites of the theory of many-dimensional discrete function spaces and the theory of finite differences are concisely presented. Special attention is paid to constructing and studying the optimal cubature formulas in Sobolev spaces. As an asymptotically optimal sequence of cubature formulas, a many-dimensional abstraction of the Gregory quadrature is indicated. Audience: This book is intended for researchers having a basic knowledge of functional analysis who are interested in the applications of modern theoretical methods to numerical mathematics.
