Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis sought to identify trends in mortality and examine relationships among data elements. To this end, data were collected on firefighter fatalities between 1990 and 2000. (For further information, see the "Methodology" section or the Appendix.) Using this analysis, better targeted prevention strategies can be developed in keeping with the USFA's goal to reduce firefighter deaths 25 percent by 2005. In contrast to the annual USFA firefighter fatality reports, this analysis allowed for comparisons over time to determine any changes in firefighter mortality, with a depth of scrutiny not present in earlier analyses.
Book Synopsis Altitude Adjustment by : Mary Beth Baptiste
Download or read book Altitude Adjustment written by Mary Beth Baptiste and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aware that her youth is slipping by, Mary Beth Baptiste decides to escape her lackluster, suburban life in coastal Massachusetts to pursue her lifelong dream of being a Rocky Mountain woodswoman. To the horror of her traditional, ethnic family, she divorces her husband of fifteen years, dusts off her wildlife biology degree, and flees to Moose, Wyoming for a job at Grand Teton National Park. In these rugged mountains, unexpected lessons from nature and wildlife guide her journey as she creates a new life for herself. Set against the dramatic backdrop and quirky culture of Jackson Hole, this beautifully written memoir is a thoughtful, often humorous account of a woman’s bumbling quest for purpose, redemption, and love through wilderness adventure, solitude, and offbeat human connections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the deaths of 14 firefighters during the South Canyon Fire in July 1994, fire scientists assessed what occurred and suggested guidelines that may help firefighters avert such a tragedy in the future. This report describes the fuel, weather, and topographical factors that caused the transition from a relatively slow-spreading, low-intensity surface fire to a high-intensity, fast-spreading fire burning through the entire fuel complex, surface to crown. The analysis includes a detailed chronology of fire and firefighter movements, changes in the environmental factors affecting the fire behavior, and crew travel rates and fire spread rates. Eight discussion points apply directly to firefighter safety.
Book Synopsis Vegetation of the Glacier Lakes Ecosystem Experiments Site by : Claudia M. Regan
Download or read book Vegetation of the Glacier Lakes Ecosystem Experiments Site written by Claudia M. Regan and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vegetation at the Glacier Lakes Ecosystem Experiment Site, a 600 ha research site at 3200 to 3500 m elevation in the Snowy Range of southeastern Wyoming, was categorized and described from an intensive sampling of species abundances. A total of 304 vascular plant taxa were identified through collection and herbarium documentation. Plots with tree species were separated from those without tree species for ordination and classification analyses. Detrended correspondence analysis was used to order plots along major axes of composition variation, which are inferred moisture and topographic gradients. Cluster analysis was used to categorize plots based on composition similarity. The resulting groups were named according to species dominants. We identified and described in detail 4 meadow, 4 thicket or scrub, 3 krummholz, and 2 forest plant associations.

Book Synopsis Exercise Alternatives for Training Emergency Management Command Center Staffs by : Walter G. Green, III
Download or read book Exercise Alternatives for Training Emergency Management Command Center Staffs written by Walter G. Green, III and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emergency management provides the coordination needed to develop an effective community response to disasters. This critical public safety function is typically performed in mobile command posts in the field and in the jurisdiction's emergency operations center. Preparing individuals who will work in these facilities to perform their tasks under emergency conditions requires effective and realistic exercise training. The Federal Emergency Management Agency provides a five model exercise design for progressive training of emergency management staffs. This study examines the history and theoretical basis for exercises. From this background, it suggests alternatives to these five models to provide greater flexibility in delivery, options for specialized training in decision making, exercises that will support all phases of emergency management, and options for increased realism. Among the alternatives suggested are Tactical Decision Games, What-If Exercises, Postal Exercises, and a variety of simulation tools. The book is accompanied by a detailed appendix that provides specific instructions for each exercise type.
