Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: An analysis is presented of the vertical-tail loads to be expected as a result of abrupt aileron action in accelerated flight, as in rolls from turns or pull-outs, for example. The formulas derived show that the vertical-tail loads obtained in rolling pull-out maneuvers are directly proportional to the load factor, wing loading, and aileron effectiveness and are inversely proportional to directional stability. Sample calculations for an assumed fighter airplane are presented and discussed. It appears that critical tail loads may occur in rolling pull-out maneuvers, particularly on airplanes with good ailerons and low directional stability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous NACA reports have indicated that it is possible to develop angles of sideslip which may cause critical vertical-tail loads in abrupt rudder-fixed rolls from accelerated flight, but the reliability of methods for predicting these sideslip angles has not been demonstrated. In this report expressions for calculating the sideslip angles in these maneuvers are derived from theoretical considerations, and numerical solutions are obtained for a wide enough range of variables to permit construction of design charts. Comparison of the maximum sideslip angles obtained from the design charts and from flight tests with those obtained using a greatly simplified expression indicates sufficiently close agreement to warrant use of the simplified expression for first approximations in predicting sideslip angles and vertical-tail loads occurring in rolling pullout maneuvers for conventional ailerons. An approximate method for treating cases of nonlinear directional-stability characteristics is presented which gives reasonably good results. The vertical-tail loads measured on one airplane in rolling pull-out maneuvers corresponded closely with those calculated by the simplest methods when the actual sideslip angles attained were applied.

Book Synopsis Collection and Analysis of Hinge-moment Data on Control-surface Tabs by : Paul E. Purser
Download or read book Collection and Analysis of Hinge-moment Data on Control-surface Tabs written by Paul E. Purser and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various wind-tunnel data on the hinge-moment characteristics of control-surface tabs have been collected and analyzed. The data, all of which are for plain unbalanced tabs, were obtained from force tests of models in two- and three-dimensional flow and from pressure-distribution measurements on models in two-dimensional flow. Some data that show the effects of Mach number on tab hinge moments for representative conventional and NACA 6-series airfoil sections are presented.

Book Synopsis Flight Studies of the Horizontal-tail Loads Experienced by a Modern Pursuit Airplane in Abrupt Maneuvers by : Langley Aeronautical Laboratory

This book was released on 1944 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: Flight measurements were made on a modern pursuit airplane to determine the approximate magnitude of the horizontal tail loads in accelerated flight. In these flight measurements, pressures at a few points were used as an index of the tail loads by correlating these pressures with complete pressure-distribution data obtained in the NACA full-scale tunnel. In addition, strain gages and motion pictures of tail deflections were used to explore the general nature and order of magnitude of the fluctuating tail loads in accelerated stalls. The results indicated that, if the airplane were not stalled, a total up load of 5700 pounds would be experienced on the horizontal tail in an 8g pull-up and that, with power on, this load would be distributed unsymmetrically with about 800 pounds more up load on the left stabilizer than on the right. When stalling occurred there was an initial abrupt increase in the up tail load of the order of 100 percent of the previous load, which was followed by repeated load and stress variations due to tail buffeting. Under the condition of tail buffeting, the possibility of excessive stresses due to resonance was indicated.

This book was released on 1945 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: A procedure is presented for determining the motions of an airplane resulting from the deflection of the lateral or directional controls for the case of non-linear derivatives. The step-by-step integration on which the procedure is based considers the rolling, the yawing, and the lateral accelerations computed from wind-tunnel data as functions of the sideslip angle. A sample computation table is presented to illustrate the application of the procedure. A comparison is made of different methods for calculating the disturbed motions of an airplane resulting from an abrupt aileron movement. Experimental data, which were obtained from conventional wind-tunnel tests of a model of a recent fighter airplane, are used in the computations for comparing the various methods. The resulting solutions show that, for the case of nonlinear derivatives, the calculated motions are in better agreement with the results obtained from flight tests if the rolling and yawing accelerations computed from static-model tests are condisered as functions of the sideslip angle. The lateral acceleration, which is often assumed to be negligible, should be considered. The variation of the rolling and yawing accelerations resulting from aileron movement probably should also be considered when sufficient data are available.
