Book excerpt: The demands of industry for creating new functional materials with predetermined properties have stimulated an increasing interest in the investigation of processes occurring in plasma jets of complex chemical composition (homogeneous and heterogeneous) as well as their interaction with hard surfaces. This Proceedings volume contains contributions from leading international specialists on plasma science and technology which were presented at the 2nd International Workshop ''Plasma Jets in the Development in of New Materials Technology'', 3--9 September 1990, Frunze (USSR). The scope of the workshop incorporated the following aspects: modelling of the processes of momentum heat and mass transfer in homogeneous and heterogeneous plasma jets as well as interaction between the particles and the base; diagnostics of the parameters of gas and disperse phases in plasma flows; plasma-spraying processes investigations; processes of treatment and production of materials, including powder materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, plasma spray has been received a large number of attentions for various type of applications due to the nature of the plasma plume and deposition structure. The plasma gas generated by the arc, consists of free electrons, ionized atoms, some neutral atoms, and undissociated diatomic molecules. The temperature of the core of the plasma jet may exceed up to 30,000 K. Gas velocity in the plasma spray torch can be varied from subsonic to supersonic using converging-diverging nozzles. Heat transfer in the plasma jet is primarily the result of the recombination of the ions and re-association of atoms in diatomic gases on the powder surfaces and absorption of radiation. Taking advantages of the plasma plume atmosphere, plasma spray can be used for surface modification and treatment, especially for activation of polymer surfaces. I addition, plasma spray can be used to deposit nanostructures as well as advanced coating structures for new applications in wear and corrosion resistance. Some state-of-the-art studies of advanced applications of plasma spraying such as nanostructure coatings, surface modifications, biomaterial deposition, and anti wear and corrosion coatings are presented in this book.

Book excerpt: The demand of industry for new composite and functional materials with preset properties has led to increased investigations into processes which occur in plasma jets of complex chemical composition with an additive to disperse particles as well as at their interaction with hard surfaces under the conditions of superfast cooling of the particles which are in complex aggregation state. This Proceedings Volume contains the papers that were presented during the International Workshop ''High-Temperature Dust-Laden Jets in the Processes of Treatment of Powder Materials'', held in Novosibirsk, USSR, 6--8 September 1988. The scope of the Workshop incorporated the following topics: -- Modelling of the processes of interphase momentum, heat and mass transfer in dust-laden plasma jets as well as interaction between the particles which are in complex aggregation state and the base. -- Diagnostics of the parameters of gas disperse phases in high-temperature dust-laden flows. -- Processes of the formation of plasma sprayed coatings. -- Processes of treatment and production of powder materials.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The temperature of in-flight particles in suspension plasma spraying (SPS) is one of the key parameters affecting the coating microstructure. Temperature measurement has been carried out before for in-flight particles in air plasma spray (APS) and other thermal spraying processes. Suspension plasma spray (SPS) is an emerging coating deposition technology that permits the deposition of nanostructured coatings with unique structural characteristics. The particles size in SPS is smaller than the one that is commonly used is APS and other spray processes leading to specific challenges for determining its temperature. The aim of this work is to assess the feasibility of two-color pyrometer for in-flight particles in suspension plasma spraying. To do so, spectroscopic analysis in the visible to near infrared range was carried out on the jet stream when suspension of 20 wt. % YSZ particles in pure ethanol was sprayed. The analysis takes into account the radiation scattered by the particles (Mie scattering) as well as the radiation directly detected from the plasma in the jet stream, and it was found that the effect of the scattered radiation by the particles on temperature measurement is negligible along the center axis of spraying at the melting point of Zirconia. Moreover, the main and dominant source of error on temperature measurement is the plasma radiation, the vapors and the free electrons in the background of the continuum. One the other hand, it was found that going for a longer wavelength from 1 ?m to 2.5 ?m is not a promising wavelength range for temperature measurement. Finally, the measurements carried out in this thesis favors future development for the current configuration of a commercial diagnostic sensor to have a better iv precision for the value of temperature measurement, as it was found that the error because of the current configuration can reach 540 ° C degrees.

The last part of the book includes a comparative analysis of different thermal spray processes, which is essential for the optimal selection of the appropriate thermal spray process in a given application. Coverage of system integration has been expanded with the addition of a detailed discussion of online instrumentation and process diagnostics and numerous examples of industrial scale spray booth designs. Attention is also given to coating finishing and health and safety issues. An extensive review is presented of thermal spray applications grouped in terms of process objectives and present use in different industrial sectors. This book will serve as an invaluable resource as a textbook for graduate courses in the field and as an exhaustive reference for professionals involved in the thermal spray field.
