Book excerpt: The narrow band chaotic output of the self-amplified spontaneous-emission free-electron laser (SASE FEL) exhibits intensity spikes. In the linear regime before saturation, we use an approach developed by Rice to determine probability distributions for the peak values of intensity in both the time and frequency domains. We also find the average number of spikes per unit time or frequency. In addition, we derive joint probabilities for the intensity in the output pulse to have values I[sub 1] and I[sub 2] at times t[sub 1] and t[sub 2], and for the spectral intensity to have values[tilde I][sub 1] and[tilde I][sub 2] at frequencies[omega][sub 1] and[omega][sub 2].

Book excerpt: Filling the need for a book bridging the effect of matter on X-ray radiation and the interaction of x-rays with plasmas, this monograph provides comprehensive coverage of the topic. As such, it presents and explains such powerful new X-ray sources as X-ray free-electron lasers, as well as short pulse interactions with solids, clusters, molecules, and plasmas, and X-ray matter interactions as a diagnostic tool. Equally useful for researchers and practitioners working in the field.

Book excerpt: The analysis develops a classical theory of how a signal evolves from the initial incoherent spontaneous emission in long undulators. The theory is based on the coupled Klimontovich-Maxwell equations. Formulas for the radiated power, spectral characteristics and electron correlations are derived. The saturation due to nonlinear effects is studied using a quasi-linear extension of the theory. The results agree reasonably well with the recent Livermore experiment in the microwave range. Performance of a possible high-gain free electron laser in a short-wavelength region is evaluated.

Book excerpt: This work studies the production and measurement of longitudinally coherent, ultrashort pulses of light from a self-amplified spontaneous emission free-electron laser (SASE FEL) by using an energy-chirped electron beam in conjunction with a tapered undulator. This scheme effectively preserves the FEL gain only where an appropriate undulator taper compensates for the detuning experienced by an amplifying radiation spike as it slips forward in the electron beam rest frame. The simultaneous time and frequency-domain measurement of ultrashort pulses of light generated in this manner were made with an advanced transient-grating frequency-resolved optical gating (TG FROG) diagnostic, which has the potential to push ultrashort light pulse measurement at FEL facilities to shorter wavelength regimes. The theoretical framework presented in this dissertation has two components. The FEL theory presented here includes an analysis of the coupled wave and Vlasov equations, which are linearized in the one-dimensional case, and are solved in the frequency domain by the Laplace transform technique. The exponential gain regime for SASE FEL light is explored in detail to clearly identify concepts that are relevant to the energy-chirp and undulator tapering experiment. Some of these concepts are illustrated with fully three-dimensional, time-dependent numerical particle simulations using the FEL code GENESIS for the supportive case of ultrashort, low-charge electron beams. In addition, nonlinear optics, the foundation upon which all FROG diagnostics are built, is briefly explored using two complementary perspectives as they apply to the TG FROG geometry. The experimental section describes in detail the first direct time-domain measurements of a single coherent radiation spike from a SASE FEL amplifier employing the energy-chirped electron beam and tapered undulator technique at the SPARC FEL test facility in Frascati, Italy. Electron beams were accelerated and compressed using the velocity bunching technique, which leaves a residual energy-chirp in the longitudinal phase space. The energy-chirp was compensated by appropriately tapering individual undulator sections. This process was optimized at a resonant wavelength of & lambda; = 530 nm. The ultrashort light pulses that were generated had a temporal full-width at half-maximum of 98 fs and a time-bandwidth product of TBP & sim; 1.2, indicating that the Fourier limit was nearly achieved. This experiment provides further insight into methods that can be used to shape the SASE FEL longitudinal profile and enhance coherence properties. In addition, the measurements were taken with an advanced, and relatively simple, TG FROG diagnostic that can potentially be used to measure ultrashort UV pulses at FEL facilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a solid theoretical background in photon-matter interaction, Nonrelativistic Quantum X-Ray Physics enables readers to understand experiments performed at XFEL-facilities and x-ray synchrotrons. As a result, after reading this book, scientists and students will be able to outline and perform calculations of some important x-ray-matter interaction processes. Key features of the contents are that the scope reaches beyond the dipole approximation when necessary and that it includes short-pulse interactions. To aid the reader in this transition, some relevant examples are discussed in detail, while non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics help readers to obtain an in-depth understanding of the formalisms and processes. The text presupposes a basic (undergraduate-level) understanding of mechanics, electrodynamics, and quantum mechanics. However, more specialized concepts in these fields are introduced and the reader is directed to appropriate references. While primarily benefiting users of x-ray light-sources, the material is equally of relevance to researchers in various disciplines, such as life sciences, biology, materials science, physics, and chemistry that plan on applying these new facilities in their respective fields.

Book excerpt: The goal is to develop a rigorous theory to study the effects of stochastic fluctuations of self amplified spontaneous emission free-electron laser (SASE FEL) on the near-resonant ionization of atomic/ionic systems. To this end, density matrix equations of motion are utilised in their raw form for the sake of Monte Carlo simulations and in their particular averaged forms. First, a couple of simpler averaging methods were used to quickly understand the general behavior of the interaction of fluctuating fields with atoms. To this end, the particular case of neon (Ne) and helium (He) were used, where the effects of the interplay of the pulse duration and the coherence time on the oscillations of the yield profile, which manifest due to Rabi oscillations, were studied in comparison to a coherent pulse. Second, a rigorous method of perturbative approach is developed, which is based on the expansion in terms of multitime cumulants which are a particular combination of the field's coherence functions. The range of validity of the model is tested in terms of the field's coherence temporal length and peak intensity. Particularly, the photoionization of helium (He) and lithium ion (Li+ ) via their doubly-excited state 2s2p 1 P has been studied with the interacting FEL's 1st-order coherence function modelled as square-exponentially dependent. The traditional asymmetric resonant Fano-profile is broadened and is shown to acquire a Voigt profile. The effects of pulse duration, coherence time and peak intensity on the lineshape are clearly shown. The two approaches of averaging were compared and the supremacy of the latter is shown. When compared to Monte Carlo, it is seen that the rigorous averaging approach results in competing values up to higher peak intensities. This suggests that in the scenarios of low coherence time and peak intensities, the averaging method developed in this thesis is highly preferable over the traditional Monte Carlo given its high computational demands.

Book excerpt: The authors investigate finite pulse effects in self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE), especially the role of coherent spontaneous emission (CSE) in the start and the evolution of the free-electron laser (FEL) process. When the FEL interaction is negligible, they solve the one-dimensional Maxwell equation exactly and clarify the meaning of the slowly varying envelope approximation (SVEA). In the exponential gain regime, they solve the coupled Vlasov-Maxwell equations and extend the linear theory to a bunched beam with energy spread. A time-dependent, non-linear simulation algorithm is employed to study the CSE effect for a general beam distribution.
