Book excerpt: This study utilized the descriptive and quantitative approaches to examine elementary school principals' leadership style and school climate in an urban school district. Research supports the relationship of leadership styles, school climate and student achievement does exist and this study identified and explored how it exists between the school principals' leadership style and school climate. Participants consisted of elementary principals and teachers in an urban school district within the southeastern region of the United States. The purpose of this study was to determine the existence of a relationship between elementary school principals' leadership styles and school climate in an urban school district. Survey instruments were the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ) Form XII Self and the Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire for elementary schools (OCDQ-RE). Demographic information was gathered from the principals and teachers that were subjects of this research (Table 3 and Appendix C). The following research question was posed: Does a relationship exist between the elementary school principals' leadership style and school climate in an urban school district? Descriptive statistics summarized the data characteristics of the independent variable (principal leadership style) and dependent variable (school climate). The data was analyzed using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient. A Positive linear relationship in climate was found for three different groups. These three groups had a statistically significant correlations coefficient and p-values between the LBDQ-Form XII Self and OCDQ-RE subscales. The school principals must be able to access and evaluate the impact they may have on the climate of the school. This study proposed strategies school principals from the participating school district can use to create a more open school climate.

Abstract: Abstract A large body of research suggests there is a strong link between effective leadership and effective organizations (Lezotte, 1997; Sergiovanni, 1995; Bolman & Deal, 1994; Boyan, 1988; Griffiths, 1988). Hogan, Curphy, and Hogan (1999) assert that '...a growing body of evidence supports the common sense belief that leadership matters' (p.34). Fullan (2002) says that schools need leaders who can change 'what people in the organization value and how they work together to accomplish' (p.19). Meanwhile Beach and Reinhartz (2000) note that '...leadership is essential to promoting student achievement and creating a vision of success for the total educational program' (P.72). The principal is the critical person who makes the decisions that affect people's lives. We believe that the interactive relationship between the principal and various constituencies, including teachers, students and parents, are important in achieving the goals and objectives of the school. However, there are indications in the research primary school that school effectiveness has not improved since the appointment of a new principal three years ago. Although he adopted a more participatory leadership style that involved teachers in advising about or actually making decisions concerning school business, the school did not have any positive effect as the theory argued. Therefore, it arouses my interest in investigating the underlying reasons. In this paper, the different styles of leadership of the former and present principals will be discussed and the perception of the leadership of the two principals by teachers will be given. In addition, this paper will also present the extent to which the school was effective under the leadership of the two principals and how the two leadership styles have impacted on the effectiveness of the school. Book excerpt: This mixed-methods study examined the self-perceived leadership orientation of principals serving Alliance school districts within the state of Connecticut. The Connecticut State Department of Education has classified the 30 lowest performing districts as Alliance school districts. This study expanded the existing body of knowledge pertaining to the Bolman and Deal (2003) multiframe explanation of organizational leaders by applying various leadership frames to identify and effectively respond to organizational situations and by including Alliance school principals in the sample population. The data analysis confirmed that Alliance principals use all four of the Bolman and Deal leadership frames in their decision-making process (i.e., structural, human resource, political, and symbolic). The analysis also found that principals apply reframing as a decision-making strategy as situations evolve. Effective leaders apply one or more of the four leadership frames to determine the best course of action. The 15 interviews conducted for this study revealed that all of the participating principals had experienced the need to make decisions during crisis events such as school evacuations and lockdowns, as well as medical emergencies, and they applied the reframing process. The data also revealed that, contrary to their personal descriptions of themselves, the participating principals are political leaders. Through their descriptions of the manner in which they changed the cultures of their schools or advocated for their schools at the district and community levels, they demonstrated a high level of political acumen. The complexities of the principalship were clearly evident in the data collected for this study. The principals managed challenging crisis situations, during which the school community relied upon them for leadership. Every principal will be called upon to manage a crisis event at some point during his or her career. This study not only confirmed this certainty, but provides recommendations for both aspiring and current administrators as they seek to effectively support all stakeholders through such challenging, and often traumatic, events.
