For the available data, measured efficiency losses are compared with the calculated losses and the agreement is found to be within the experimental accuracy of the data. The method presented may be used with reasonable accuracy to determine the net change in propeller efficiency due to the combined effects of the nozzle and internal flow if the characteristics of the propeller without nozzles are known.

The effect of varying the gross load is shown for one configuration. The resistance characteristics of planing-tail hulls are compared withthose of a conventional flying-boat hull. The forces on the forebody and afterbody of one configuration are compared with the forces on a conventional hull.

Book excerpt: Aerodynamic tests of a 12.208-foot-diameter two-blade hollow steel propeller before and after alteration for thermal de-icing have been made in the Langley 16-foot high-speed tunnel to determine the effect of the alterations on propeller efficiency. The propeller, which had Clark Y blade sections, was tested on a 2000-horsepower dynamometer at blade angles ranging from about 25 degrees to 60 degrees at the 42-inch radius and at airspeeds varying from 100 to 425 miles per hour.

For a known compressor performance map, a matching method is described to show some of the design compromises that must be made when the components are to be combined into a turbine-propeller engine. A method of predicting engine performance for a range of operating conditions from known component maps is presented. An illustrative example of the matching method and the performance analysis is presented, showing some of the practical limitations of engine operation.
