Book excerpt: The environment has always been a great source of raw material for humanity, whether this matter is of plant, animal, or mineral origin. The vast majority of needs are met through factor-factor and factor-product correlations, which indicate in their genesis the nature of economic development. However, numerous scientific works, especially those produced by scholars of the economic sciences, demonstrate that some resources made available by nature are finite, and it should therefore be sought to develop strategic measures so that their use occurs in the most rational way possible. Among these strategies is, since the 1970s, the creation and dissemination of so-called "protected areas", whose main scope is the preservation of the environment for future generations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do economists know about land-and how they know? The Oxford Handbook of Land Economics describes the latest developments in the fields of economics that examine land, including natural resource economics, environmental economics, regional science, and urban economics. The handbook argues, first, that land is a theme that integrates these fields and second, that productive integration increasingly occurs not just within economics but also across disciplines. Greater recognition and integration stimulates cross-fertilization among the fields of land economics research. By providing a comprehensive survey of land-related work in several economics fields, this handbook provides the basic tools needed for economists to redefine the scope and focus of their work to better incorporate the contemporary thinking from other fields and to push out the frontiers of land economics. The first section presents recent advances in the analysis of major drivers of land use change, focusing on economic development and various land-use markets. The second section presents economic research on the environmental and socio-economic impacts of land use and land use change. The third section addresses six cutting-edge approaches for land economics research, including spatial econometric, simulation, and experimental methods. The section also includes a synthetic chapter critically reviewing methodological advances. The fourth section covers policy issues. Four chapters disentangle the economics of land conservation and preservation, while three chapters examine the economic analysis of the legal institutions of land use. These chapters focus on law and economic problems of permissible government control of land in the U.S. context.

This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume advances the state-of-the-art in the study of the interplay among financial crises, poverty dynamics and environmental sustainability. It offers timely and unique contributions to the immediate global challenge of sustainable development. Developing a new evidence-base, the volume offers concrete recommendations for policy action needed in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in relation to environment and poverty during the current conditions of financial distress. The approach taken is inductive and evidence-driven. Most analysis is based on in-depth case studies that aim to offer a detailed and dynamic picture on how poverty and environmental sustainability interact in specific social contexts and financial crises. In this way the volume aims to generate a wealth of new and concrete evidence that offer a solid foundation to understand the multiple channels through which social and environmental factors interact, and the ways in which this interaction can and should be managed in order to achieve the needed global transition to sustainability. Broader dynamics that are covered and analysed include the historical legacies of structural adjustment and colonialism; the current debt wave experienced in developing countries; the role of inequality; the significant impact that climate change has on livelihoods and on meeting the SDGs; the new challenge presented by the Covid-19 pandemic for the SDGs; the challenge of sustainable funding for SDGs; and the need for a new eco-social contract. Case-studies examined include Cambodia, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Zambia, and subregions such as the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa and Lower Mekong Countries. The volume is part of a joint initiative by the ‘Sussex Sustainability Research Programme (SSRP)’ of the University of Sussex, the ‘UNDP-UNEP Poverty-Environment Action for Sustainable Development Goals’ and the ‘United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD)’. The overall aim is to advance a new research programme and foster a better understanding of the multiple, complex and often opposing ways through which the punctuated economic slowdown of financial crises, poverty dynamics and environmental sustainability interact. It also makes novel recommendations into how poverty reduction and environment can work in synergy rather than being antagonistic, especially during financial distress, leading into recommendations directly geared towards achieving the SDGs and beyond.

Book excerpt: An essential resource work for understanding how to design and develop smart applications for present and future problems of the field of agriculture.— Dr. Deepak Gupta, Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology, Delhi, India As a result of the advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), many aspects of daily life have been transformed by smart digital technology. Advanced intelligent algorithms can provide powerful solutions to real-world problems. Smart applications have become commonplace. All areas of life are being changed by smart tools developed to deal with complex issues challenging both humanity and the earth. Artificial Intelligence and Smart Agriculture Applications presents the latest smart agriculture applications developed across the globe. It covers a broad array of solutions using data science and AI to attack problems facing agriculture worldwide. Features: Application of drones and sensors in advanced farming A cloud-computing model for implementing smart agriculture Conversational AI for farmer's advisory communications Intelligent fuzzy logic to predict global warming’s effect on agriculture Machine learning algorithms for mapping soil macronutrient elements variability A smart IoT framework for soil fertility enhancement AI applications in pest management A model using Python for predicting rainfall The book examines not only present solutions but also potential future outcomes. It looks at the role of AI-based algorithms and the almost infinite combinations of variables for agricultural applications. Researchers, public and private sector representatives, agriculture scientists, and students can use this book to develop sustainable and solutions for smart agriculture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Research Institute (ARI) on "The Application of Systems Science to Energy Policy Planning" was held under the auspices of the NATO Special Programme Panel on Systems Science in collaboration with the National Center for Analysis of Energy Sys tems, Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA, as a part of the NATO Science Committee's continuous effort to promote the advancement of science through international cooperation. Advanced Research Institutes are sponsored by the NATO Science Committee for the purposes of bringing together senior scientists to seek consensus on an assessment of the present state of knowl edge on a specific topic and to make recommendations for future research directions. Meetings are structured to encourage inten sive group discussion. Invitees are carefully selected so that the group as a whole will contain the experience and expertise neces sary to make the conclusions valid and significant. A final report is published presenting the various viewpoints and conclusions. The NATO Systems Science Panel noted that the systems approach is increasingly being applied to energy policy analysis and plan ning in both public and private sectors of national economies. Consequently, it seemed appropriate at this time to bring together experts to review and evaluate recent experience, in order to iden tify strengths and weaknesses in current prac tice, and to make recommendations for research directions.
