The objective of identifying intersection designs that optimize throughput and an analysis of the designs based upon cost, level of service, capacity, and operation would provide a comparison of alternative intersection treatments available for possible use in North Carolina. Existing literature revealed some comparisons of unconventional intersection design as well as evaluations for median and left-turn lane treatments. Using a SYNCHRO analysis to determine the level of service (LOS), eight unconventional intersection types were compared using a conventional signalized intersection as a base design. The same analysis was performed for six intersections in North Carolina that met criteria for consideration. Construction costs were estimated for each intersection type and compared to intersections in North Carolina. All of the North Carolina intersections were recommended for unconventional intersection design retrofit including the Center-Turn Overpass, the Median U-turn, the Michigan Diamond, and the Quadrant. Others considered were the Echelon, the Continuous Flow, and the Single Point Urban Interchange. The Tight Diamond intersection type was removed from research due to an unexplained flaw in the modeling. Future research may lead to case studies of intersections that have already been retrofitted with the non-traditional intersection types.

Book excerpt: The displaced left turn (DLT) (also known as the continuous flow intersection (CFI)) design has proven to be a superior alternative to the conventional intersection in terms of handling heavy volumes during peak periods. In locations where the availability of additional right of way and driveway access is not a major concern, the DLT design is a cost effective and time saving option compared to the expensive option of grade separated interchanges. Recently, a new non-traditional intersection design called the parallel flow intersection (PFI) has been proposed. The PFI is also an at-grade design and operates with the same number of signal phases as a DLT. This research compares the operational performance of DLT and PFI designs based on the maximum through and left turn movement throughputs for three different high volume scenarios using traffic simulation. The results indicate that maximum throughput values of through movement in PFI were very close to the values obtained for DLT. The designs produced similar results mainly because both operate as two-phase signals (at the main intersection) with equal green times for through movements. The left turn movement throughputs in PFI were found to be lower than those at DLT. In particular, for two study cases, the DLT was able to process 180 and 80 more vehicles per hour per lane than the PFI. This can be attributed to the fact that, on average, the left turning vehicles experience greater number of stops in a PFI than they would in a DLT.

Researchers have demonstrated the benefits of several unconventional intersection designs and their implementation at different sites throughout the United States and abroad have delivered significant improvement in traffic compared to the conventional intersections. A signalized and un-signalized roundabout, a Continuous Flow Intersection, and a Parallel Flow Intersection have been evaluated and compared in this research as viable alternatives to the traditional single intersection. Using micro-simulation platforms, AIMSUN 6.0 and VISSIM 5.10, models of each intersection are evaluated for low, medium, and high entrance volumes. The analysis revealed that the Roundabout performs better at low entering volumes while the Continuous flow yields better results at high volumes.

The addition of lanes and signal timing optimization has long been used to increase capacity and traffic flow. However, these may not be the best alternatives for a given location. Some unconventional intersection/interchange designs may be more suited for a rural area with high speeds on the major-movement. The traditional alternatives were compared to several unconventional intersections. Eight different traffic volume scenarios were simulated using SYNCHRO, a traffic modeling software program. These scenarios were used to show how an intersection design would react to certain traffic volume characteristics. The scenarios represented different traffic volume distributions at the intersection. For example, the traffic volumes used in scenario 1 were considered to be typical intersection volumes. The remaining seven scenarios added traffic volumes to different turn or through movements. This resulted in eight traffic volume scenarios for the intersection. The study resulted in a table that summarized the evaluation. The table showed which designs operated best under certain traffic volume conditions. Transportation engineers could use the table as a starting point when designing rural intersections.

Book excerpt: Typical four phase four legged intersection often operate inefficiently restricting the vehicle throughput thus resulting in larger delays. The impact of left turns is high for the larger delays and is also the most significant factor contributing to the level of service of the conventional intersections. So, by altering the geometric design of the conventional intersection, capacity can be increased and intersection delay can be decreased. Two phase intersections (2-PI) utilize an unconventional lane arrangement in order to maximize the vehicular throughput. This arrangement involves displacing left turn lanes across opposing through traffic before the main intersection is reached. Such an alteration allows left and through vehicles to proceed simultaneously, and consequently, both the intersection capacity and delay are improved. Numerous studies have validated the operational improvements associated with such a geometric design, but in-depth analysis of this unconventional system can provide a maximized effect. The main aim of the research is to show how split 2-phase unconventional intersections can minimize delay and maximize capacity for the same given cycle length when compared to the conventional intersections and also how pedestrian safety is increased when compared to the regular two phase and conventional intersections. The main research goal is obtained by setting two objectives. The first objective is to minimize delay of the proposed unconventional intersection when the volume is low. The second objective is to maximize capacity when the volume is high and congested. A non-linear programming model for finding optimum cycles times for both the objective functions under different volume conditions is developed using MATLAB and the results were used in VISSIM to run simulations and check the accuracy of model. After defining the main objective functions and a list of constraints, preliminary tests were performed to show the effectiveness of the method adapting to changes in traffic demand. The results found from the optimization were used to run simulation tests comparing the capacity and delay at a split 2-phase intersection to those from a conventional four-legged geometric design. VISSIM was used for analysis of unconventional intersection and also for conventional intersection for comparison. The results of several trials have strongly showed the optimum performance of the proposed unconventional geometric arrangement.
