Book excerpt: An FFT algorithm is examined with respect to its utility as an interference suppressor in direct sequence spread spectrum communications signals. An FFT approach is especially attractive because of its computational economy. It is this approach which has been implemented on the TMS32OC30 hardware forming part of the Advanced Communications Electronic Support Measures System (ACES) and will be implemented on other high-speed hardware forming part of that system. The basic problem to be solved is described, followed by a description of the algorithm. The algorithm consists of power spectrum estimation using an FFT-based routine, interpolation of the power spectrum at a set of equally-spaced points different from those calculated by the FFT, and design of an FIR linear phase filter which filters the data, i.e., suppresses the interference. This technique is feasible so long as the bandwidth of the interference during the observation time over which the FFT is calculated is much less than the bandwidth of the spread spectrum signal. An important result from this brief study is that the interpolation algorithm used can have an effect on the performance and reliability of the suppression filter ultimately designed and that for small order filters, the discrete Fourier transform approach may be better ... Book excerpt: Time-Frequency distribution are being recognized as powerful tools in signal analysis and processing. Although time-frequency analysis has been of interest for some-time, several advances in recent years have broaden its application areas to include both civilian and military use. The capability of the time-frequency distributions to properly represent multiple component signals in time and frequency permits the development of new and efficient approaches for interference excision in direct sequence spread spectrum communication systems. This report addresses techniques for mitigating nonstationary interference in spread spectrum communication systems; and fast algorithms and efficient realizations of excision techniques based on time-frequency distributions. The scope of this effort is to develop technology to immunize the spread spectrum communication systems to smart jamming and demonstrate the ability to yield improved receiver performance in a highly nonstationary interference environment. This is achieved by utilizing the jammer temporal, spectral, and spatial characteristics to provide accurate and sufficient information leading to its full and effective excision.

Book excerpt: This report presents a comprehensive summary of a number of methods used in filtering narrowband jammers and interference out of direct sequence spread spectrum communication systems. The basic concept is presented first followed by a discussion of several analog techniques for interference suppression. Most of the emphasis is on digital adaptive methods, which rely on adaptive filtering algorithms. Many of these algorithms are highlighted. This is followed by a discussion on the research which has been conducted in digital excision over the past several years. Two cases based on the author's work are also presented. The first details the performance one can expect from the recursive least squares algorithm when the interferer is a stable tone. An analytical model, which predicts the bit error rate performance for the recursive algorithm under certain conditions, is derived. This model is compared to results obtained from computer simulation, the tracking and filtering capabilities of hte block and recursive least square algorithms when the interference is of the FM-type, i.e., a swept tone having a bandwidth which is approximately 20% of the chip rate. Book excerpt: In this report, linear and non-linear transform domain filtering techniques are examined and proposed as a means of enhancing the inherent interference immunity associated with direct sequence spread spectrum communication receivers. This analysis begins with a review of block transform domain Wiener filters and is further developed in the lapped transform domain. The latter part of this report addresses the use of lapped transforms to transform the received data signal into the transform domain wherein adaptive excision is performed. System performance results are presented for a variety of channel conditions and compared to those obtained using orthonormal block transforms. These results demonstrate the improved performance and increased robustness with respect to jammer frequency and bandwidth of lapped transform domain excision techniques relative to similar algorithms based on non-weighted block transforms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a novel Kalman filtering approach to the suppression of narrowband interference from direct sequence spread spectrum communications systems. The algorithm is based on the digital phase-locked loop Kalman filter. Because the interference is assumed to be much stronger than either the signal or noise, the Kalman filter locks onto a function related to the interference. The net result is an estimate of the phase of the interference and its amplitude. The algorithm is characterized through computer simulation for the case of narrowband Gaussian noise interference. Examples of the phase- and envelope-tracking capabilities of the algorithm are presented, followed by bit error rate curves for interference bandwidths ranging from 0.5% to 5.0% of the chip rate of the spread spectrum signal. The report concludes with three adaptive architectures.-The first is suitable for constant envelope interference; the second is a more general structure; and the third incorporate a decision-feedback structure accompanied with a training sequence.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 39 reports theses submitted in 1994, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spread-spectrum signals are used widely in military and commercial communication systems due to their interference rejection capability and their lower probability of interception. In military applications the effects of intentional interference (jamming) are mitigated by the processing gain of the spread-spectrum system. In many spread-spectrum systems, processing gain alone is not sufficient to achieve satisfactory system performance and additional interference rejection techniques need to be employed. The interference suppression circuit is placed prior to the spectrum despreader with the goal of reducing the jammer/interferer energy to an adequately low level that can be handled by the system processing gain. We have presented a novel knowledge-based interference cancellation scheme for direct sequence spread-spectrum systems. This innovative approach utilizes: (1) IPUS, an expert system for the Integrated processing and Understanding of signals, to monitor the communication signal environment in order to determine the parameters of interfering signals within a pre-specified accuracy, and (2) Expert system rules to select from a library of preselected techniques, suitable interference rejection schemes based upon the knowledge obtained from monitoring the signal environment. The effectiveness of this novel interference rejection capability is demonstrated by considering a number of interference scenarios and using the software package SPW(copyright), a time-domain Signal Processing Worksystem.

Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to adaptive interference mitigation techniques based on multiple antennas for global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) in the time, domain, spatial and spatial-temporal domains. As the performance of GNSS can easily be impacted by various intentional and unintentional interferences, the book explores in detail various types of interference, including jamming , high dynamic jamming, spoofing, multipath and pulsed interference. It offers a valuable reference work for graduate students and engineers in the field of satellite navigation and signal processing.
