Book excerpt: With anticipated increased use of composite materials in aerospace structures and other applications, thermal properties of composites are needed as essential design information. In the past there was only scanty amount of research effort in thermal analysis of composites, as most of the work has been concerned with their mechanical properties. This report contains results from a rigorous analysis to determine steady-state effective thermal conductivities of fiber-matrix type of composites. The fibers bundled into twos are considered dispersed in a matrix of resin. The dispersion patterns of configurations considered are: (1) uni-directional fibers in a matrix, as the simplest geometry, and (2) 0.90 configuration in which two uni-directional tapes are overlaid at 90 degrees to each other. The method of analysis is to solve a two-region steady-state heat conduction equation either analytically or numerically. The analysis assumes a prior knowledge of the geometry of a composite and the constituents thermal conductivities.

Book excerpt: The heat transfer in an anisotropic thermosetting advanced composite during its cure was investigated experimentally and then modeled analytically as well as empirically. AS4/3501-6 graphite/epoxy was used for the experiments. A cure kinetics model based on the variation of resin peak exothermic temperature was compared to the experimental data for the resin degree of cure measured at various times for a series of constant temperatures. This model predicted the experimental values well for temperatures above 150°C but did not perform as well below this temperature. The specific heat of the composite was found to decrease with temperature when the resin is a liquid but to increase with temperature when the resin gels and becomes a solid. Models have been developed to predict the thermal conductivity of the fiber-reinforced composite as a function of fiber volume fraction, resin degree of cure, ply layup angles measured in any direction and for various fiber/matrix contact conductances. These models were experimentally verified using a guarded hot plate apparatus to measure the thermal conductivity of the graphite/epoxy as a function of these variables through a range of typical cure temperatures. A second order tensor transformation of the principal thermal conductivities was experimentally verified for the fiber-reinforced composite. A unique experimental procedure was designed to measure the off-axis conductivities of an anisotropic composite material. A new self consistent model for the transverse thermal conductivity of a fiber-reinforced composite predicts the experimental data better than seven models previously derived by other authors which were also compared to the data. The self consistent model predicts a percolation threshold near a fiber volume fraction of 48%. A model for the effective transverse conductivity of a material with cylinders arranged in rectangular order, first derived by Lord Rayleigh, was modified to account for the possible effects of a fiber/resin contact resistance and for the transversely anisotropic behavior of the composites' thermal conductivity.

Book excerpt: For uni-directional fibrous composites and laminated composites, a heat-balance integral method has been developed for the analysis of transient heat flow along the fibers or in the plane of laminates. The method is based on the construction of, for the two constituent media, temperature profiles which not only satisfy the necessary boundary conditions but also fulfill the asymptotic error function properties when inter-region conduction is vanishingly small or at very early times of the heat transient.

Book excerpt: Numerical Simulation of the Heat Conductivity of Randomly Inhomogeneous Two-Dimensional Composite Materials consists of six sections. The introduction and second section present a wide variety of theoretical and empirical models for heat transport in two-component composites and their governing scientific principles. In particular, the methods of homogenization and the representative volume element are examined. The third section is devoted to the numerical methods in heat conduction processes in composites. In this section, the choice of the finite difference method and the Monte Carlo method for numerical experiments on the study of heat transfer in two-component composites was confirmed. The fourth section describes the computational model for two-component composite material with different values of the matrix and filler thermal conductivity. The study assumes a random placement of inclusions in the composite matrix with the following parameters: The concentration and size of inclusions, and the minimum distance between the inclusions. The fifth section deals with the distribution statistics of the effective heat conductivity. General forms of the effective thermal conductivity distributions and their transformation have been obtained when the parameters of the inclusions placement have been changed. Moreover, the influence of the placement heat-insulating inclusions on the parameters of the effective thermal conductivity distributions has also been discussed. The Monte Carlo simulation has been used to obtain the statistics of the effective anisotropy of the thermal conductivity distributions and its relationship to the effective thermal conductivity distributions statistics. The local heat fluxes statistics and pattern maps of local heat fluxes through a randomly inhomogeneous material with a heat-conducting matrix and heat-insulating inclusions have been analyzed in the sixth section. Numerical experiments reveal the influence of the number and extent of induced heat-conducting channels on the effective thermal conductivity of the material. Special attention has been paid to an area with a shortage of induced heat-conducting channels, or the so-called dark matrix. Multimodal distributions of the local heat flux density, as well as the binding of two distribution modes to heat-insulating inclusions and induced thermal conductive channels have been described. The third mode of distribution was tied to a dark matrix on the heat-insulating inclusions map. This section also presents the statistical distributions of angles between the direction of local heat fluxes and the temperature macro gradient as well as the transformation of the character of distribution when changing the parameters of placement for inclusions.
