Book excerpt: The findings of this work provides an insight into the fundamental aspects of liquid droplet combustion modelling by developing different droplet sub models. An unsteady, spherically symmetric, sub critical, single component gas phase model is developed first and tested for various ambient conditions of temperature, pressure, composition and fuels. It is further extended to include the effects of convection, droplet heating and emissions.A high pressure droplet vaporization model is evolved in view of the supercritical vaporization occuring in diesel engines and liquid rockets. Also, simple and detailed multi component droplet vaporization/combustion models are developed, since commercial fuels used in engines are multi component fuels. The discrete droplet sub models are simple and realistic requiring less computation time and therefore feasible for their implementation in spray combustion codes where CPU economy is vital.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this work is to investigate theoretically two different problems of interest in Combustion. First, autoignition in hydrogen-oxygen systems above crossover temperatures and under various conditions of pressure and composition is addressed computationally and by asymptotic methods. Different descriptions of the detailed chemistry are evaluated through comparison of computed and measured ignition times, and a balance between accuracy and simplicity is struck in selecting rate parameters to be used in investigating reduced chemistry. For isobaric, homogeneous, and adiabatic mixtures, only five elementary steps suffice to describe accurately ignition over the range of conditions addressed, which allows the derivation of explicit formulas for the induction time by neglecting heat release and reactants consumption. Further reduction of the chemistry to two overall steps, is used to include the effect of the energetics in the temperature-dependent initiation and branching rates. In this approach, an asymptotic analysis for high activation energy of the branching step is developed for predicting ignition times of branched-chain explosions on the basis of a criterion of thermal runaway. The second study addresses the vaporization of a droplet in rectilinear motion relative to a stagnant gaseous atmosphere for the limit of low Reynolds numbers and slow variation of the droplet velocity. A formal asymptotic analysis is performed, showing that, under the conditions addressed, there is an inner region in the vicinity of the droplet within which the flow is nearly quasisteady except during shorts periods of time when the acceleration changes abruptly and a fully time-dependent outer region in which departures of velocities and temperatures from those of the ambient medium are small. Matched asymptotic expansions, followed by a Greens-function analysis of the outer region enable expressions to be obtained for the velocity and temperature fields and for the droplet drag and vaporization rate. The results are applied to problems in which the droplet experiences constant acceleration, constant deceleration and oscillatory motion. The results, which identify dependences on the Prandtl number and the transfer number, are intended to be compared with experimental measurements on droplet behaviors in time-varying flows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dust Explosion Dynamics focuses on the combustion science that governs the behavior of the three primary hazards of combustible dust: dust explosions, flash fires, and smoldering. It explores the use of fundamental principles to evaluate the magnitude of combustible dust hazards in a variety of settings. Models are developed to describe dust combustion phenomena using the principles of thermodynamics, transport phenomena, and chemical kinetics. Simple, tractable models are described first and compared with experimental data, followed by more sophisticated models to help with future challenges. Dr. Ogle introduces the reader to just enough combustion science so that they may read, interpret, and use the scientific literature published on combustible dusts. This introductory text is intended to be a practical guide to the application of combustible dust models, suitable for both students and experienced engineers. It will help you to describe the dynamics of explosions and fires involving dust and evaluate their consequences which in turn will help you prevent damage to property, injury and loss of life from combustible dust accidents. Demonstrates how the fundamental principles of combustion science can be applied to understand the ignition, propagation, and extinction of dust explosions Explores fundamental concepts through model-building and comparisons with empirical data Provides detailed examples to give a thorough insight into the hazards of combustible dust as well as an introduction to relevant scientific literature

Book excerpt: Combustion of Liquid Fuel Sprays outlines the fundamentals of the combustion of sprays in a unified way which may be applied to any technological application. The book begins with a discussion of the general nature of spray combustion, the sources of liquid fuels used in spray combustion, biomass sources of liquid fuels, and the nature and properties of fuel oils. Subsequent chapters focus on the properties of sprays, the atomization of liquid fuels, and the theoretical modeling of the behavior of a spray flame in a combustion chamber. The nature and control of pollutants from spray combustion, the formation of deposits in oil-fired systems, and the combustion of sprays in furnaces and engines are elucidated as well. The text is intended for students undertaking courses or research in fuel, combustion, and energy studies.

Thus, it is often desirable to use computed results to supplement information obtained by analytic means. We illustrate how computation can supplement analysis by examining the role of gas-phase unsteadiness in droplet vaporization and combustion. 9 refs., 4 figs., 2 tabs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theory of the thermal ignition of a fuel droplet in a hot oxidizing atmosphere is formulated using an existing gas-phase ignition criterion and an analysis for the transient droplet heating process. Limits in the ignitability of a system, either spontaneous or delayed, are identified. A kinetically-controlled ignition regime and a droplet-heating-controlled ignition regime are shown to exist in cold and hot environments respectively, each exhibiting distinctively different ignition characteristics. The ambient pressure is found to have small influence on the ignition lag except for the marginally ignitable cases.

Book excerpt: Throughout its previous four editions, Combustion has made a very complex subject both enjoyable and understandable to its student readers and a pleasure for instructors to teach. With its clearly articulated physical and chemical processes of flame combustion and smooth, logical transitions to engineering applications, this new edition continues that tradition. Greatly expanded end-of-chapter problem sets and new areas of combustion engineering applications make it even easier for students to grasp the significance of combustion to a wide range of engineering practice, from transportation to energy generation to environmental impacts. Combustion engineering is the study of rapid energy and mass transfer usually through the common physical phenomena of flame oxidation. It covers the physics and chemistry of this process and the engineering applications—including power generation in internal combustion automobile engines and gas turbine engines. Renewed concerns about energy efficiency and fuel costs, along with continued concerns over toxic and particulate emissions, make this a crucial area of engineering. New chapter on new combustion concepts and technologies, including discussion on nanotechnology as related to combustion, as well as microgravity combustion, microcombustion, and catalytic combustion—all interrelated and discussed by considering scaling issues (e.g., length and time scales) New information on sensitivity analysis of reaction mechanisms and generation and application of reduced mechanisms Expanded coverage of turbulent reactive flows to better illustrate real-world applications Important new sections on stabilization of diffusion flames—for the first time, the concept of triple flames will be introduced and discussed in the context of diffusion flame stabilization
