Book excerpt: A deficit currently exists in teacher preparation programs for teaching students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) using evidence-based practices, specifically in the area of Applied Behavior Analysis. As communication deficits are a primary characteristic associated with the diagnosis of ASD teaching communication skills is a common educational goal for students with ASD, and this skill needs to be addressed in teacher education. Mand training is one evidence-based practice applied to teach independent requesting skills to students with ASD. In this study, four teachers serving students with characteristics of ASD in the classroom participated in a multiple-probe across-participants study evaluating the extent to which online training videos prepare teachers in mand training procedures for students with ASD. Concurrent with teacher participants, changes in rates of student mands were evaluated for four students receiving instruction in a multipleprobe design. Data analysis consisted of visual analysis of graphically displayed results and calculation of effect sizes. Results indicate that the Online Training Videos (OTV) were not effective as a standalone intervention for preparation of teachers to teach mands, however three student participants showed improved student outcomes.

Book excerpt: Effective teacher training strategies are needed to close the gap between research and practice allowing teachers to implement evidence-based instruction for students with severe disabilities. This study examines the effects of an instructional video model used to instruct three special education teachers to implement evidence-based practices (EBPs) (i.e., peer networking; simultaneous prompting and constant time delay) with students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and its effect on student outcomes (i.e., social interactions with peers, receptive shape identification, and multiplication facts). A performance feedback component was introduced when teachers were struggling with implementation fidelity or students were not making optimal progress. A multiple baseline design across participants revealed that all three teachers made substantial improvement after watching the video model, but one teacher required performance feedback to achieve 100% implementation fidelity. Two students made progress on their target skill, though each made optimal progress only after adjustments were made in the performance feedback phase. This study suggests that video modeling can be used as an effective training tool to teach teachers to implement EBPs with students with severe disabilities, and addresses training teachers to evaluate and adjust instruction based on student performance.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the effectiveness of using a video modeling teaching strategy coupled with guided practice lesson to teach students on the autism spectrum (ASD) functional social skills. Four students and their parents or guardians elected to participate in this study. Interviews with parents or guardians were conducted to determine student's level of performance in 13 social areas. Students then participated in social instruction using video modeling, particularly using to video "Fitting in and Having Fun", as a key strategy. Video modeling is a teaching strategy that involves watching a video that models a desired behavior then practicing the desired behavior. Field notes were taken by the researcher after each lesson and themes emerged from these notes. Post interviews were given after completing 13 lessons to determine the effectiveness of the strategy and themes emerged from the surveys as well as informal discussions with parents and students. The study determined the follwing: 1) Students with autism respond positively and quickly to the strategy of video modeling and that it is an effective strategy for decreasing undesired social behaviors and increasing desired social behaviors. 2) Parents of students with ASD are seeking effective strategies for teaching social skills that can be easily implemented at home. 3) Students with ASD can depict appropriate social responses when acting out a scene and this activity can help them to further understand social responses in general. 4) Video modeling engages the student through the use of media which can be exceptionally effective when working with students with ASD.

Book excerpt: Video self-modeling (VSM) is a proven and effective method for teaching new or more advanced skills and behaviors to people with autism. The technique uses homemade videos (created by parents, teachers, or therapists) to demonstrate a desired behavior. The key feature of any self-modeling video is that the person modeling the behavior in the video is the same person watching the video. VSM allows a person with autism to see himself performing the very skill he is trying to learn. This is accomplished through careful editing and manipulation of video footage, transforming it into a cohesive teaching tool. And the process is a lot easier than you may think! Seeing Is Believing begins with an overview of the research and science behind VSM and insights into why it is a particularly good teaching method for people with autism and other developmental disabilities. It then explains the process of making self-modeling videos from start to finish, including how to: choose the behavior/skill to teach conduct a task analysis select and use camcorders and video software storyboard video scenes plan and shoot footage transfer the video to a VCR, DVD, or computer edit and manipulate the footage keep track of and interpret data These videos can teach or modify a wide variety of behaviors and skills, such as controlling tantrums, increasing the frequency and length of verbal responses, making requests, interacting with peers, and solving math problems. Seeing Is Believing is a good companion book to Functional Behavior Assessment for People with Autism and Stop That Seemingly Senseless Behavior! For further information on VSM, go to siskinvsm.org. Here youwill find a blog that provides additional advice and consultation via email on VSM methods, sample videos, FAQs, and a discussion forum with professionals in the field. siskinvsm.org will become operational in March 2009.

Book excerpt: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often require direct teaching to learn social and communication skills. Research supports video modeling as an effective intervention to teach various skills to individuals with ASD. Recently, commercially made video models have become available to teachers and caregivers as a subscription service, although research supporting their effectiveness is sparse. The current study examined the effectiveness of commercially made video models with three individuals with ASD at an Early Intensive Behavior Intervention center. The dependent measure of this study was the percentage of social skills each participant independently imitated from a video model. A multiple-probe-across-participants design was used. Of the three participants, only one demonstrated accurate imitation of the social skill modeled. The other two participants never engaged in the skill.

Book excerpt: Currently, there is no known research on teaching gun safety skills to individuals with developmental disabilities. Research has shown that children typically engage in gunplay behaviors if they find a firearm. These behaviors can lead to unintentional firearm injuries and even death, especially for young children. Previous research has shown the success of video modeling for teaching various skills to individuals with autism. This study examined the effectiveness of video modeling for teaching gun safety skills to three children with autism spectrum disorder, and found that video modeling was effective for one participant, but in situ training was needed to promote maintenance. For a second participant, IST was effective for skill acquisition and maintenance. Finally, a modified IST procedure was effective for a third participant when implemented by a trainer but not when implemented by his mother.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Educators are in need of appropriate interventions for teaching individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). A widely used (Bellini & Akullian, 2007; Delano, 2007) and evidence-based (Horner et al., 2005) instructional intervention for individuals with ASD is video modeling. Video modeling involves the learner viewing a video demonstration of a targeted behavior and subsequently performing what was viewed. A variation of video modeling is video prompting in which the learner views a video demonstration that is a single task analysis step or chunk of a targeted behavior followed by practice of that step/chunk. Video prompting has successfully been used to teach a number of behaviors to individuals with developmental disabilities including self-help skills (Norman, Collins, & Schuster, 2001), daily living skills (Cannella-Malone et al., 2006), and cooking related tasks (Graves, Collins, Schuster, & Kleinert, 2005; Sigafoos et al., 2005). When selecting appropriate gross motor activities to teach individuals with ASD, physical educators must consider their developmental delays and deficits in movement behaviors (Pan, Tsai, & Chu, 2009). Dance is a common activity offered in physical education programs (NASPE, 2005). By performing appropriate dances, individuals with ASD may be able to benefit both physically (e.g., enhanced coordination and balance) and socially (e.g., enhanced inclusive recreation and leisure activities). Dance has positively impacted children and adolescents with disabilities as evidenced by increased participation and cooperation (Crain, Eisenhart, & McLaughlin, 1984). However, additional research is needed to investigate instructional dance interventions for children and adolescents with ASD. The current study employed a multiple probe across participants design to evaluate the effects of video prompting as an intervention for dance instruction. Seven participants with high-functioning ASD participated in the study. Six males (ages 12 to 16) and one female (age 15) received Cupid Shuffle dance training in a one-on-one instructional format. The researcher showed one video vignette (clip) at a time on a MacBook Pro® laptop computer. After viewing a vignette, participants were given the opportunity to reproduce the modeled steps. The researcher provided positive reinforcement, such as praise and/or a high-five for correctly performed steps. To correct errors, a 4-level least-to-most prompting system was implemented. Maintenance, generalization, and social validity were assessed. Results showed that six participants acquired the Cupid Shuffle from the video prompting intervention. Moreover, three participants demonstrated 100% maintenance and one participant demonstrated 99.1% maintenance at 1-week post-intervention. One participant demonstrated 100% maintenance at 8-days post-intervention. Participants achieved overall generalization probes percentages of 44-68%. In terms of generalizing the newly learned dance to a new situation by dancing alongside the trainer to music, four participants achieved overall generalization percentages of 89-100%. When generalizing the newly learned dance to the new situation of dancing alongside peers to music, three participants achieved overall generalization percentages of 97-100%. Furthermore, parents and participants who completed social validity questions reported that the goals, procedures, and outcomes were acceptable and important.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to determine if video modeling is an effective strategy in teaching social skills to high school students with Autism Spectrum Disorders and which teaching strategies are best conjoined with it. This study compared the frequency of specific social behaviors that contribute to success in a classroom setting. Three situations were observed: 1) a student was exposed to video modeling designed by the researcher paired with Social Stories (TM); 2) a student was exposed to the researcher's video modeling paired with prompts and positive reinforcement, and; 3) a student was exposed to the regular social skills instruction that other student receive in a resource setting. Data were collected using the Prosocial Behaviors Academic Checklist (PBAC). Near or at the end of the study, a survey asking for information about changes in specific behaviors was given to the students' other teachers. The data collected suggested that each intervention conjoined with video modeling is more effective for certain social behaviors, but overall more effective than the regular social skills instruction. Data collected from the surveys did not clearly indicated whether the participants generalized the targeted behaviors.

Book excerpt: The motor development of preschool-age children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has received increased interest among researchers, as evidence of gross motor deficits and atypical behavior for this group emerges (Lloyd, M., Macdonald, M., & Lord, C. (2011). There is extensive research demonstrating the benefits that video modeling provides for children with ASD. The present study examined the effectiveness of video modeling on the acquisition of chained gross motor play sequences for children diagnosed with ASD. Four children were taught to functionally engage with an obstacle course that involved a complex chained sequence of behaviors. Three out of four of the participants acquired the modeled behaviors. These results provide empirical evidence that support the effectiveness of using video modeling as an approach to teach gross motor play activities.

Book excerpt: The current study examined the effectiveness of a video modeling procedure on a basicmath skill acquisition in students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) using a multipleprobe across students design. Participants were four kindergarten/first grade students in aself-contained classroom in an urban public school. All met the criteria for ASD prior tobeginning the study. The independent variable included a video model teaching a basicmath skill. The dependent variable was correct student response. Results indicated thatone of the four students responded to the intervention immediately and these skillsmaintained over time. However, the other three students did not respond to videomodeling instruction. Conclusions regarding the effectiveness of the video modelingprocedure for teaching math skills were inconclusive. Implications for further researchare addressed.

Book excerpt: Previous research has shown video instruction to be an effective intervention for improving academic, daily living, and social skills. This study evaluated the effectiveness of using video prompting via an iPad to teach Kindergarten students with ASD functional routines. A multiple probe across participants design was used to evaluate the effects of video prompting using highly preferred technology to learn to pack up a bookbag. The data indicate that one participant acquired the skill and maintained it over time in the absence of the intervention. The other participant did not master all of the steps of the task analysis. These data suggest while video prompting may be an effective intervention for some students, other variables may influence the effectiveness of video prompting. Limitations of the study and directions for future research are discussed.
