Book excerpt: The second edition of this book provides structural engineers with a concise introduction to the architectural, structural and technological aspects of cable roofs, and supplies sufficient information for engineers to carry out their own designs. The improved methods for generating wind and earthquake histories have been included as the trend in modern design codes seem increasingly to require that dynamic response of other forms of non-linear structures such as guyed masts is considered at the design stage.

Book excerpt: Nowadays, cable structures are gaining prominence in civil engineering against the traditional constructions thanks, among other reasons, to their lighter, to a better optimization of the material mechanic properties, the saving of material or its great beauty. Despite the great advances in recent decades in the creation of new processes, software and models for the design and analysis of cable type structures using in most cases the Finite Element Method, still remain major problems in these processes due to the flexibility of the cable elements and the need to settle the length of the cables and the possible large nodal displacements. This work deals with the main aims of the understanding those problems for the most important cable type structures shape finding and structural analysis, at the same time that the features of those structures, mainly the cable-stayed bridge and the suspension bridge, and their relation with the analysis using F.E.M. are understood and analyzed. All have been possible thanks to the realization of three examples, two proposed by Dr. Iwasaki and a model of an actual cable-stayed bridge using for all of them the Finite Element Method software, comp++. This program developed in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of The Nagaoka University of Technology, provides the great advantage of have implemented a new concept of pulley that suppose a major advance in resolving the cable structures shape finding and structural analysis problems. After complete the exercises, can be done several reflections about the efficiency, accuracy and easily of F.E.M. in the execution of shape finding and structural analysis of cable type structures. And, what is more important and original, the importance of the new concept of pulleys from Dr. Iwasaki and Dr. Dang, crucial in controlling the length of the cables sliding through them, and in the settling of nodal coordinates. Making, thanks to the new developments, the shape finding much simpler and intuitive, through the possibility of impose restrictions and assumptions of displacements or pre-stresses in cable elements and pulleys. The main interest of this new developed system of pulleys is that, after one step of the shape finding, the results can be used to the next step, or them can bind into nodes and continue applying new loads with the structural analysis, which was not possible in this way before these important advances.

Book excerpt: Finite element thermal-structural analyses of cable-stiffened space structures are presented. A computational scheme for calculation of prestresses in the cable-stiffened structures is also described. The determination of thermal loads on orbiting space structures due to environmental heating is described briefly. Three finite element structural analysis techniques are presented for the analysis of prestressed structures. Linear, stress stiffening and large displacement analysis techniques are investigated. The three techniques are employed for analysis of prestressed cable structures at different prestress levels. The analyses produce similar results at small prestress but at higher prestress, differences between the results become significant. For the cable-stiffened structures studied, the linear analysis technique may not provide acceptable results. The stress stiffening analysis technique may yield results of acceptable accuracy depending on the prestress. The large displacement analysis technique produces accurate results over a wide range of prestresses and is recommended as a general analysis technique for thermal-structural analysis of cable-stiffened space structures.

Book excerpt: With the advantages of high strength, lightweight, no corrosion and excellent fatigue resistance, Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) cables have the potential to replace steel cables in a broad range of applications. The ideal structures for such cables are highly pre-tensioned cable systems that are loaded orthogonally to their cable axes. This type of structures with CFRP cables, such as cable net facades, spoked wheel cable roofs and stressed-ribbon bridges, can be built economically with large or small spans. This book is the first in the world to demonstrate the advantages of using CFRP cables in orthogonally loaded cable structures, including detailed analyses of mechanical properties and economic efficiencies. Furthermore, in order to solve the anchorage problem which hinders the application of CFRP cables, two new CFRP cable anchorages, especially suitable for orthogonally loaded cable structures, are proposed in this book. In addition, a prototype of CFRP spoked wheel cable roof built by the author is presented to show the feasibility of CFRP orthogonally loaded cable structures based on the present technology; a novel design, i.e. the CFRP Continuous Band Winding System, is also conceptually introduced, so as to show a feasible form of CFRP orthogonally loaded cable structures in the future. This book is written to encourage the use of CFRP cables and show that CFRP cable structures are feasible and have advantages over steel cable structures. It will be read by researchers of structural engineering and by consulting engineers.
