Book excerpt: This report investigates two of the most common modes of localized failures, namely, periodic fiber-bridged matrix cracks and transverse matrix cracks. A modification of Daniels' bundle theory is combined with Weibull's weakest link theory to model the statistical distribution of the periodic matrix cracking strength for an individual layer. Results of the model predictions are compared with experimental data from the open literature. Extensions to the model are made to account for possible imperfections within the layer (i.e., nonuniform fiber lengths, irregular crack spacing, and degraded in-situ fiber properties), and the results of these studies are presented. A generalized shear-lag analysis is derived which is capable of modeling the development of transverse matrix cracks in material systems having a general multilayer configuration and under states of full in-plane load. A method for computing the effective elastic properties for the damaged layer at the global level is detailed based upon the solution for the effects of the damage at the local level. This methodology is general in nature and is therefore also applicable to (0(sub m)/90(sub n))(sub s) systems. The characteristic stress-strain response for more general cases is shown to be qualitatively correct (experimental data is not available for a quantitative evaluation), and the damage evolution is recorded in terms of the matrix crack density as a function of the applied strain. Probabilistic effects are introduced to account for the statistical nature of the material strengths, thus allowing cumulative distribution curves for the probability of failure to be generated for each of the example laminates. Additionally, Oh and Finney's classic work on fracture location in brittle materials is extended and combined with the shear-lag analysis. The result is an analytical form for predicting the probability density function for the location of the next transverse crack occurrence within a crack bounded reg...

Book excerpt: The paper is focused on an estimation of the extent of the fracture process zone and the zone of cumulative damage evolving during tensile failure of structures made of quasi-brittle materials, e.g. cementitious composites. The zone is determined via a developed (semi-)analytical method based on a combination of multi-parameter linear elastic fracture mechanics, cohesive crack models and plasticity theory. Results of the method are verified by numerical simulations of three-point bending of notched beams using an academic computational code based on a discrete spring network (lattice-particle) model and programs based on continuum modelling (finite elements), both with implementation of the cohesive zone approach. Three materials differing in cohesive behaviour are considered in the study; apart from the classical quasi-brittle softening material also a quasi-ductile and a strain hardening ones are taken into account. Used simulation tools provide sound results, particularly in the case of the softening material. Moreover, significant potential of the developed modelling techniques is presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third volume published in the series of proceedings of international symposia called 'Brittle Matrix Composites' organised every three years in Poland. The first Symposium, denoted as BMC1, was organised in Jablonna near Warsaw in 1985 under the auspices of the European Mechanics Committee (EUROMECH 204). The second (BMC2) took place in Cedzyna near Kielce in 1988; the present (BMC3) is being held in Warsaw in September 1991. The BMC Symposia are intended to cover mechanical problems related to three main groups of composite materials: high-strength composites, ceramics and cement-based materials. The common feature which is a link between these materials is their brittle behaviour. Brittleness has no clear definition, but it is considered as an important potential disadvantage of every material. Brittle fracture creates various situations which may be very dangerous for the safety and serviceability of structures manufactured from composite materials. Also the brittleness of non-structural elements may give rise to disadvan tageous behaviour, e.g. during transportation and montage. There are many structural and technological ways of reducing material brittleness. Their development and further improvement are of primordial importance for most applications of these composite materials. The problems considered in the series of BMC Symposia cover all aspects of brittle matrix composites: • design studies, theoretical considerations, computational methods; • prediction of behaviour, fracture mechanics and other approaches; • testing methods, test results, all types of experimental studies; • manufacturing processes, applications, observations and durability assess ments, environmental effects, etc.

Book excerpt: Flaws are the principal source of fracture in many materials, whether brittle or ductile, whether nearly homogeneous or composite. They are introduced during either fabrication or surface preparation or during exposure to aggressive environments (e. g. oxidation, shocks). The critical flaws act as stress concentrators and initiate cracks that propagate instantaneously to failure in the absence of crack arrest phenomena as encountered in brittle materials. This book explores those brittle materials susceptible to crack arrest and the flaws which initiate crack induced damage. A detailed description of microstructural features covering numerous brittle materials, including ceramics, glass, concrete, metals, polymers and ceramic fibers to help you develop your knowledge of material fracture. Brittle Failure and Damage of Brittle Materials and Composites outlines the technological progress in this field and the need for reliable systems with high performances to help you advance the development of new structural materials, creating advantages of low density, high resistance to elevated temperatures and aggressive environments, and good mechanical properties. The effects of flaw populations on fracture strength The main statistical-probabilistic approaches to brittle fracture The use of these methods for predictions of failure and effects induced by flaw populations The application of these methods to component design The methods of estimation of statistical parameters that define flaw strength distributions The extension of these approaches to damage and failure of continuous fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites

Book excerpt: In this paper, recent results of the experimental investigation, which was aimed at disclosing some aspects of shear failure mechanism in concrete beams reinforced longitudinally, are presented. The aim of the test was to investigate the influence of a shear span-to-depth ratio and a beam size on failure mode and shear capacity in the tested beams. It has been found that the shear span-to-depth ratio a/d is an important parameter, which significantly affects the shear failure mechanism in the investigated members. This fact was presented in several scientific papers. However, the second important parameter, which must be taken into account when analysing reinforced concrete beams without stirrups, is the size of the member. The “size effect”, which is described in professional literature as a decrease of shear strength with an increase of the members depth, is not evaluated sufficiently enough. The effective length-to-depth ratio leff/d, which has been identified in this paper, also has a considerable influence on the contributions of the shear resistance mechanism and thus the ultimate shear capacity. In this paper it has been shown that members characterized by the same a/d but different leff/d can fail in a different way.

Book excerpt: Particle packing has been recognized to influence mechanical and durability properties of cementitious materials, which are generally favored by optimum packing density. Particle size is a common denominator in such studies. Unfortunately, so far, particle shape has not been extensively and unambiguously evaluated in these approaches. Part of it is definitely due to the interconnected nature of size and shape as well as the missing of a clear methodological framework. Nevertheless, various strategies for assessment of shape are available. Capabilities of available advanced computer-simulation systems render possible considering differently-shaped particles. This will make it possible studying in an economic way the effect of shape on properties of densely packed aggregate or binder particles at low w/c ratios. So, shape assessment is becoming an even more relevant issue in structural studies of concrete. This paper presents a somewhat underrated approach to the assessment of shape of (aggregate) particles, i.e. Fourier analysis. A new shape index is proposed.

Book excerpt: Due to its poor strain capacity and a low tensile strength, concrete is brittle and highly sensitive to cracking detrimental to application sustainability. Despite this well-established knowledge, the irony today is that investigations on concrete are usually limited to the compression behavior. The creep behavior that is a major concern for concrete structures is no exception to this observation. Only one reason can explain this aberration: the difficulty to perform a tensile test on cement-based materials, particularly their fixture to the loading device. This paper describes the experimental setup developed to achieve direct tensile and bending creeps. The precautions taken to obtain relevant data are described. For comparison, tensile, flexural and compressive basic creep test were conducted in parallel. Although the approach is still controversial, the basic creep strain was determined by subtracting the shrinkage strain and instantaneous strain from the total strain. Results available for specimens subjected to 50% of the strength in tension or in compression are presented. The final discussion compares the basic creep under the different types of loading.

Book excerpt: In understanding the complexity of the fracture mechanics of brittle matrix composites, knowing reliable values of the mechanical properties of the fiber-matrix interface are important. Since all experiments designed to evaluate the mechanical properties of the fiber-matrix interface rely on curve fitting experimental measurements to analytical results, accurate physical modeling of these tests is imperative. In this final report, two common tests, namely the push-in test and the slice compression test, were analytically simulated. In the push-in test, the effect of extrinsic factors such as indentor shape and size, and push-through radius hole, and intrinsic factors such as transverse isotropy of fibers on load-displacement curves was studied. All factors except the push through hole-radius were found to affect the load-displacement curves. In the slice compression test, comparison was made for the values of maximum protrusion, residual protrusion and debond lengths for a simple shear-lag analysis and a finite element analysis model. Large differences ranging from 15% to 70% were found by using the two different models. Hence, the importance of accurate modeling of the test cannot be ignored. The study also gives tools to an experimentalist for designing reliable experiments for evaluating reliable values of the mechanical properties of the fiber-matrix interface.
