Book excerpt: This thesis addresses data-driven analysis as well as prediction-based design of aperiodic sampling in control systems. In many modern control applications, the traditional view of sampling and controlling in a periodic fashion must be abandoned due to varying transmission delays, data loss or uneven computational latencies. The effect of these undesired aperiodicities on the closed loop must thus be analyzed. In addition, a targeted aperiodic design of the sampling pattern, e.g. via event-triggered control (ETC), often allows for a better usage of bandwidth than periodic concepts. We consider both perspectives in this thesis. In particular, first we provide methods to analyze stability of control systems under arbitrary aperiodic sampling directly from recorded data. Previous approaches to this end required model knowledge, which might be challenging to obtain. Second, we propose a prediction-based approach for design of the aperiodic sampling pattern, called rollout ETC. This approach allows for predictability of the required communication resources and a guarantee of improved sample efficiency, which were both difficult to address in existing ETC schemes.

Book excerpt: This research is concerned with the development of computer-oriented procedures for the design of sampled data control systems. Two general areas of this problem are considered: the synthesis of optimal controllers having low dynamical order, and the design of adaptive control systems. The performance of the system is evaluated in terms of a quantitative performance criterion. Two new performance criteria are developed; the meanquadratic-error criterion and the average rate-of-decay criterion. Since the primary requirement of a dynamical system is stability, these criteria are examined in terms of the theorems from Liapunov's direct method of stability analysis. The analysis of the rate criterion may be applied to nonlinear as well as linear systems. Included in the discussion are illustrations on how some of the qualitative performance criteria, such as 'good' transient response, may be satisfied through proper selection of the mathematical performance criterion. The optimization procedures are based upon the concept of performance feedback in which the evaluated performance of the system is used directly in the adjustment of the system parameters.

Book excerpt: This book approaches its subject matter in a way that provides Lyapunov function analysis and event-triggered design methods for switched dynamic systems in terms of sampled-data control, hysteresis switching control, and fault-tolerant control. This book presents several novel design methods on event-triggered control of switched linear systems, in which the events inclusively consist of not only switching itself but events occurring as the switched systems evolve. The features of our approaches lie in threefold: i) In the framework of sampled-data control, a bond between the sampling period and the average dwell time of the asynchronous switched linear neutral systems is revealed, with which stabilization conditions are derived for periodic sampling and event-triggered sampling mechanisms, respectively. ii) New event-triggered control strategies are proposed for switched linear systems and switched delay systems including switched neutral systems. The Zeno phenomenon can be excluded easily since the constant threshold can guarantee the existence of minimum positive lower bound between two continuous sampling intervals. iii). Two new fault-tolerant control methods are presented for switched cascade systems, with structural uncertainties existing in both system matrices and input matrices of the linear subsystems, by using the average dwell-time techniques. The proposed control design works on both the switched systems with actuator faults and its nominal systems (i.e., without actuator faults) without necessarily changing any structures and/or parameters of the proposed controllers. This book presents several systematical analysis and design methods for event-triggered control of switched systems in terms of the Lyapunov-based stability. It is of great significance to theoretical research and practical applications for switched systems. The book provides a unified framework of sampled-data control, including periodic sampled-data control and event-triggered control, and fault-tolerant control of switched systems. It serves as a useful book for researchers and graduate students who are interested in knowing the state of the art of analysis and synthesis of switched systems.
