Book excerpt: One of the important characteristics of effective teaching is to devote sufficient time to appropriate physical activity in physical education classes. The purpose of this study was to compare teaching effectiveness of prospective and in-service teachers in relation to student behaviors, course content activities and Academic Learning Time in Physical Education (ALT-PE) scores. Participants were 26 prospective and 28 in-service physical education teachers. Forty-minute regular lessons (n=54) of each teacher were video recorded in their natural settings and observed with the ALT-PE observational instrument. Learner involvement behaviors, context levels and ALT-PE scores were compared for two groups of teachers. MANOVA results have shown significant differences in student behaviors and course content activities between the groups. While prospective teachers spent significantly more time with management content, in-service teachers spent significantly more time with warm-up activities. Students in the classes of prospective teachers spent significantly more time with off-task and interim behaviors, but students in the classes of in-service teachers spent significantly more time with on task behaviors. The results, however, indicated no significant differences between the groups in motor appropriate behaviors of students. ANOVA results indicated that students spent 17.9% (for prospective teachers), and 18.7% (for in-service teachers) of total class time with ALT-PE behaviors. It seems fair to suggest that prospective and in-service PE teachers should decrease the time on management, transition, waiting, and theoretical explanations, while allocating more time on physical activity.

Book excerpt: This book included seven chapters of an observational study from a physical education teacher education (PETE) program; it involved teaching and learning activities of 45 PE teachers and their students from a university and three high schools. Ninety lessons were videotaped and analyzed using a systematic observation system. Results showed that the three levels of teachers spent about 50% of class time on instructing and managing, wherein their students spent nearly 50% of class time on motor related activities. The Specialist Teachers (STs) provided more Feedback information and their students engaged in more Cognitive Engaged activities than those of Inservice Teachers (ITs) and Preservice Teachers (PTs). The students taught by the ITs engaged in more Motor Engaged activities than those taught by the STs and the PTs. The PTs employed more Informing and Praise teaching behaviors than those of the ITs and STs. The results of this study provided a set of new data and meaningful recommendations for the future operation of PETE programs. The discussions have positive impacts on the teaching effectiveness of the three levels' PE classes.

Book excerpt: This study looked at pedometers and heart rate monitors, to see if they influence academic learning time in physical education (ALT-PE). ALT-PE is a behavioral measurement of quality analyzing the percentage of time students are motor engaged during the physical education class. The study used two physical education classes each participating in a basketball and soccer unit. Video was taken and analyzed of the two week baseline and experimental units. During the experimental unit, one third of the class received pedometers, one third heart rate monitors and one third no device. Each class day students rotated through each condition. ALT-PE was analyzed for the second unit and compared to the results of the first. According to the one way repeated measures ANOVA (P>0.05), it was determined that there was no significant difference among pedometer and heart rate monitors on ALT-PE. Some possible explanations include varying levels of ALT-PE between the units and therefore cannot be used for comparison, perhaps changes in ALT-PE take more time or there simply may not be any influence. Further research could help clarify these questions which would allow appropriate feedback for physical education teachers to ensure the most effective physical education class.

In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed.
