Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coupled differential equations have been formulated which model the generation of coherent anti-Stokes Raman radiation in molecular gases. The equations include not only the basic term which involves the coherent interaction of incident pump and idler (Stokes) waves to generate the anti-Stokes radiation, but also include additional terms which model other radiation and absorption processes, both stimulated and coherent, which occur simultaneously. These are important in determining saturation effects due to population depletion of the lowest energy level. Other effects have also been considered. These are a finite idler beam bandwidth (simultaneous excitation of more than one vibration frequency) a quasi-monochromatic idler beam slightly off the true Stokes frequency; laser pulse shape; modification of the result for different rotational levels. A number of different computer codes have been developed to solve the equations at different levels of complexity. With them numerical investigation of the effects of various physical factors on saturation was carried out. Some of the results are presented graphically. (Author).

This book was released on 1976 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) is a new type of Raman Spectroscopy. The phenomenon is associated with the nonlinear conversion of two laser beams in a medium into a third collimated beam at the anti-Stokes frequency of the medium. This analysis evaluates the performance capabilities of CARS under various experimental conditions for the molecules O2,N2,H2 and CO. Laser intensity fluctuations and shot noise are introduced as noise sources to predict signal-to-noise ratios (S/N). The S/N is evaluated as a function of the partial pressure of a gas to measure the performance of CARS. An analysis of the uncertainty in measuring the rotational temperature is presented for diatomic gases. Inverse bremsstrahlung in plasmas is investigated as a possible process by which the parameters measured by CARS might be altered. An experiment is discussed in which an attempt was made to remove the background signal inherent in most CARS experiments. Partial interferometric cancellation of two CARS signals was observed by the proper positioning of two sample cells in an otherwise standard CARS experiment.

Book excerpt: Stimulated Raman Scattering Microscopy: Techniques and Applications describes innovations in instrumentation, data science, chemical probe development, and various applications enabled by a state-of-the-art stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscope. Beginning by introducing the history of SRS, this book is composed of seven parts in depth including instrumentation strategies that have pushed the physical limits of SRS microscopy, vibrational probes (which increased the SRS imaging functionality), data science methods, and recent efforts in miniaturization. This rapidly growing field needs a comprehensive resource that brings together the current knowledge on the topic, and this book does just that. Researchers who need to know the requirements for all aspects of the instrumentation as well as the requirements of different imaging applications (such as different types of biological tissue) will benefit enormously from the examples of successful demonstrations of SRS imaging in the book. Led by Editor-in-Chief Ji-Xin Cheng, a pioneer in coherent Raman scattering microscopy, the editorial team has brought together various experts on each aspect of SRS imaging from around the world to provide an authoritative guide to this increasingly important imaging technique. This book is a comprehensive reference for researchers, faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and engineers. Includes every aspect from theoretic reviews of SRS spectroscopy to innovations in instrumentation and current applications of SRS microscopy Provides copious visual elements that illustrate key information, such as SRS images of various biological samples and instrument diagrams and schematics Edited by leading experts of SRS microscopy, with each chapter written by experts in their given topics

Book excerpt: A specialized software package for generating the theoretical spectra and for analyzing the experimental spectra collected from Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) was developed for a DEC VAX-11 computer using the Fortran language. In 1991, the VAX versions of the software were transported to a personal computer (PC) environment and a number of modifications had to be made. This report describes the various tasks performed to upgrade the PC versions of CARS software to detect the presence of nitric oxide in flames and to address several other concerns associated with the CARS spectral analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raman spectroscopy has advanced in recent years with increasing use both in industry and academia. This is due largely to steady improvements in instrumentation, decreasing cost, and the availability of chemometrics to assist in the analysis of data. Pharmaceutical applications of Raman spectroscopy have developed similarly and this book will focus on those applications. Carefully organized with an emphasis on industry issues, Pharmaceutical Applications of Raman Spectroscopy, provides the basic theory of Raman effect and instrumentation, and then addresses a wide range of pharmaceutical applications. Current applications that are routinely used as well as those with promising potential are covered. Applications cover a broad range from discovery to manufacturing in the pharmaceutical industry and include identifying polymorphs, monitoring real-time processes, imaging solid dosage formulations, imaging active pharmaceutical ingredients in cells, and diagnostics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coherent anti-Stokes spectroscopy (CARS) can be considerably simpler than is suggested by literature analyses based on interactions of monochromatic waves. The simplification arises when the optical properties of real lasers are incorporated into the analysis. To incorporate these properties, it is necessary to recognize that the underlying nonlinear optical interaction has a previously ignored complexity and is dependent on the coherence properties of the fields as well as on their spectra. The coherence of the interaction, as described by the CARS linewidth parameter, is degraded by the imperfect coherence of the laser sources. The occurrence of the nonlinear interaction depends on the small size of laser mode widths, or more fundamentally, on the statistical degeneration of each incident field into a small number of independent fields, a property possessed only by optical fields from lasers. If the lasers' contributions to the linewidth parameter are made dominant, the degree of coherence becomes a fixed property of the apparatus, simplifying interpretation of CARS spectra and extending the range of usefulness of CARS well beyond what would otherwise be expected. Available numerical values plus considerations of effects such as mode frequency chirp suggest that domination of the coherence by the apparatus can be arranged or at least approached in most cases.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A conceptual design of a diagnostic system using coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) to determine time resolved temperature and species concentrations in the Army Mechanics and Materials Research Center ballistic compressor has been formulated. Performance calculations have been carried out for hydrogen which is an ideal diagnostic species for this application. Results are also presented of computer code calculations of collision narrowed spectra of nitrogen. Several pump laser systems were compared, and a high repetition frequency Nd:YAG laser was determined to be superior. Population saturation, stimulated Raman gain, and optical breakdown are not expected to pose severe limitations on laser intensity or measurement signal-to-noise ratios. Consideration is given to problems pertinent to operation of the ballistic compressor including compressor recoil, window deflections and generation of CARS from the test section windows. Finally, the possibility of using pulsed stimulated Raman gain spectroscopy (SRGS) as an alternative to CARS at the high densities typical of the ballistic compressor has been identified. SRGS appears to offer adequate measurement ability and possesses certain advantages over CARS. (Author).
