Information is provided on the quantum efficiency, blur, crosstalk, and noise characteristics of each technology. The detector and array dimensions of available FPAs are provided. The traditional geometric spectral imaging system model is specifically developed aiming at spectral sensors with spectrally non-overlapping bands. Spectral imaging systems with overlapping bands also exist. For example, the quantum-dot infrared photodetectors (QDIPs) for midwave- and longwave-infrared (IR) imaging systems exhibit highly overlapping spectral responses, that are tunable through the bias voltages applied. This makes it possible to build spectrally tunable imaging system in IR range based on single QDIP. Furthermore, the QDIP based system can be operated as being adaptive to scenes. Other optical imaging systems like the human eye and some polarimetric sensing systems also have overlapping bands. To analyze such sensors, a functional analysis-based framework is provided in this dissertation. The framework starts from the mathematical description of the interaction between sensor and theradiation from scene reaching it. Book excerpt: "This thesis involved the design and testing of a modular imaging spectrometer instrument (MISI), which can provide hyperspectral image data at a very high ground resolution. The instrument can serve as an airborne laboratory for many remote sensing applications. The optical/mechanical/electrical system was designed using a system engineering approach with emphasis on system and sub-system modulation transfer function (MTF) analysis. Extensive modeling was used to predict the system performance and to aid the design trade process. Many sensor testing methodologies were developed to evaluate the performance of this electro-optical imaging system. The system engineering approach, the modeling tools developed, and the sensor performance testing methods can also be applied to other electro-optical (EO) imaging systems design and testing. Performance evaluation experiments verify that MISI has met its image quality goals. By using finite element analysis and optical image formation theory, the performance of a high-speed scan mirror was modeled. This model was used as a design tool to aid the development of the scan mirror assembly. A model-based algorithm was developed to derive the MTF of the imaging system from its edge spread function. By using prior information about the system, the MTF can be derived from very noisy edge traces. Finally, an alternative EO imaging system design criterion the information criterion, is investigated as a overall image quality measure. The results show that line-scan imaging system can be optimized informationally by shaping the electronic filter response and detector aperture. The analytical results also show that the traditional line-scan imaging system design does not maximize information, and the informationally optimized design with a diamond-shaped aperture can provide up to 1.5 bits more information than the traditional design over a broad range of radiance fields. Computer simulation confirms that by combining image acquisition and image processing, informationally optimized design tends to maximize image fidelity."--Abstract.

An algorithm for a strapdown inertial attitude system based on using real signals of high-precision laser gyroscopes is proposed. System simulation was carried out using the proposed algorithmic methods. The relevance of the control system created for the processing device parts in the conditions of automated manufacturing is substantiated. Theoretical studies are presented, and the relation between electrical signals, the level of tool wear, and the main reasons for generating electrical signals are identified. A mathematical model of cutting tool wear control was developed based on measuring the variable component of cutting electromotive force. A control system for processing device parts on computer numerical control machines in automated production conditions has been developed. It allows for recording critical wear and breakage of the cutting tool, performing its dimensional adjustment directly on the device, and carrying out its industrial approval in flexible production systems.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A FULLY AUTOMATED REAL-TIME S-PARAMETER IMAGING SYSTEM Submitted by PRANAB SABITRU NAIK for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in March 2004 This thesis reports on the design and implementation issues of the first real- time S-parameter positron imager. This is a useful tool in material science and solid-state technology for mapping the subsurface lateral defect types and concentrations. The S-parameter imager may be used on both bulk-material and thin-films samples. The system is also useful in locating top surface metallizations and structures in solid-state devices. This project consisted of three major parts, the first being a technique for scanning the sample surface with either a small 22 positron source ( Na, 0.5 mm width) or a focused positron beam. In the latter case an electromagnetically scanning positron beam is used in a fast (2 Hz) rastering mode so as to produce an image of the sample in parallel rather than in the more conventional step-by-step sequential mode commonly used. The other two parts focused on development of the electronic instrumentation and stand-alone imaging software. In this system, the use of processing time and system resources are constantly monitored and optimized so that the system is efficient for producing a high resolution S-parameter image of the sample in real time with a general purpose personal computer. The system software possesses special features with its embedded algorithms that provide the user with adequate freedom for analyzing various aspects of the image in order to obtain a clear inference of the defect profile while at the same time keeping automatic track on the instrumentation and hardware settings. The system was successfully tested with metal and semiconductor samples for defect analysis and provisional studies on a biological specimen were encouraging.
