It has been investigated for many applications, for instance, video game development, animation, movies, virtual reality, teleoperating surgery, among other engineering-related applications. In this book, Chapter One reviews preoperative planning and intraoperative navigation based on 3D modeling for retroperitoneal procedures. Chapter Two discusses fringe pattern analysis using phase shifting techniques applied to solid digitalization in Advanced RISC Machine (ARM) architecture. Chapter Three describes the steps for 3D digitalization using a Fourier Transform Profilometry (FTP). Chapter Four compares different wavelet transform for its use in 3D reconstruction.

Book excerpt: Reconstructing 3D facial shapes is of significant interest in Computer Vision and Computer Graphics. In recent years, deep learning methods have been proposed for cost-effectively acquiring accurate 3D facial shapes. To some extent, these methods can generate accurate 3D facial shapes from a single image. Most of them assume that the resolution of the input images is high enough to reconstruct facial shapes, but this is not always the case, such as in the 3D reconstruction of players in a dynamic sports scene. Due to the large distances between players, one normally cannot acquire a photo showing all the players in focus and some faces could appear blurry. To tackle this problem, we propose a new learning-based architecture that combines a Super-Resolution (SR) network with a 3D Facial Reconstruction (FR) network. First, we input a low-resolution facial photo to the SR network, which generates corresponding SR images. These are input to the FR network, which generates corresponding facial shapes. We generate multiple SR images and corresponding 3D facial shapes because the SR network is a non-deterministic algorithm whose output is not always optimal for 3D reconstruction and rendering. Hence, we choose the best pair considering the noise level of the SR images and the distribution of distances among those facial shapes in order to reconstruct a good-quality 3D facial shape despite the low resolution of the input image.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 3D face reconstruction and facial expression analytics using 3D facial data are new and hot research topics in computer graphics and computer vision. In this proposal, we first review the background knowledge for emotion analytics using 3D morphable face model, including geometry feature-based methods, statistic model-based methods and more advanced deep learning-bade methods. Then, we introduce a novel 3D face modeling and reconstruction solution that robustly and accurately acquires 3D face models from a couple of images captured by a single smartphone camera. Two selfie photos of a subject taken from the front and side are used to guide our Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) induced part-based face model to iteratively reconstruct an initial 3D face of the subject. Then, an iterative detail updating method is applied to the initial generated 3D face to reconstruct facial details through optimizing lighting parameters and local depths. Our iterative 3D face reconstruction method permits fully automatic registration of a part-based face representation to the acquired face data and the detailed 2D/3D features to build a high-quality 3D face model. The NMF part-based face representation learned from a 3D face database facilitates effective global and adaptive local detail data fitting alternatively. Our system is flexible and it allows users to conduct the capture in any uncontrolled environment. We demonstrate the capability of our method by allowing users to capture and reconstruct their 3D faces by themselves. Based on the 3D face model reconstruction, we can analyze the facial expression and the related emotion in 3D space. We present a novel approach to analyze the facial expressions from images and a quantitative information visualization scheme for exploring this type of visual data.

Book excerpt: Focusing on the anthropological consequences of the disappearing of materiality and sensory embodiment, On Insignificance highlights some of the most perturbing patterns of insignificance that have seeped into our everyday lives. Seeking to explain the semiotic causes of feelings of meaninglessness, Leone posits that caring for the singularities of the world is the most viable way to resist the alienating effects of the digital bureaucratization of meaning. The book will be of interest to scholars of anthropology, cultural studies, semiotics, aesthetics, communication studies, and social theory.

Book excerpt: Despite the advent and explosion of videogames, boardgames--from fast-paced party games to intensely strategic titles--have in recent years become more numerous and more diverse in terms of genre, ethos and content. The growth of gaming events and conventions such as Essen Spiel, Gen Con and the UK Games EXPO, as well as crowdfunding through sites like Kickstarter, has diversified the evolution of game development, which is increasingly driven by fans, and boardgames provide an important glue to geek culture. In academia, boardgames are used in a practical sense to teach elements of design and game mechanics. Game studies is also recognizing the importance of expanding its focus beyond the digital. As yet, however, no collected work has explored the many different approaches emerging around the critical challenges that boardgaming represents. In this collection, game theorists analyze boardgame play and player behavior, and explore the complex interactions between the sociality, conflict, competition and cooperation that boardgames foster. Game designers discuss the opportunities boardgame system designs offer for narrative and social play. Cultural theorists discuss boardgames' complex history as both beautiful physical artifacts and special places within cultural experiences of play.
