Book excerpt: Il était important de s’arrêter sur cette étape singulière du cursus de médecine qu’est l’élaboration du travail de thèse, rite initiatique conduisant à la pratique professionnelle en tant que docteur en médecine générale. Le travail de thèse est souvent le premier projet de recherche scientifique d’ampleur pour l’étudiant. Il y découvre un univers inconnu, où apparaissent au fil des étapes des difficultés à surmonter. Au-delà de l’obligation de réaliser une thèse, source de motivation, mais insuffisante, l’enjeu est de comprendre quels sont à chaque étape les éléments qui entrent en jeu afin que se crée la dynamique à un investissement positif. Pour explorer ces facteurs, nous avons mené auprès d’internes en médecine générale et de médecins thésés de l’université de Paris 13, une étude quantitative associant un questionnaire électronique et la méthode de focus group. Les résultats obtenus mettent en évidence que le manque de temps est le premier obstacle cité comme frein au travail de thèse. Des pistes sont données pour favoriser un vécu positif du travail de thèse afin d’en stimuler la motivation et un investissement plus précoce. En mettant en relief les principaux facteurs, il est possible d’aider les internes de médecine générale à soutenir leur thèse en mettant en lumière certains mécanismes qui sous-tendent sa réalisation. Ce travail s’inscrit dans un processus réflexif sur le troisième cycle de médecine générale afin d’apporter des éléments modifiant ou améliorant la formation en médecine générale.
