Book excerpt: El suelo es un sistema vivo en el que se desarrollan funciones esenciales para el medio ambiente y para la agricultura, y se considera que tiene salud cuando es capaz de cumplir esas funciones a la vez de preservar sus características químicas, físicas y biológicas. Gran parte de estas funciones son llevadas a cabo por los microorganismos del suelo, los cuales precisan de materia orgánica para su desarrollo y actividad. Se podría decir que la fertilidad del suelo depende de la interacción entre la materia orgánica y la microbiota. Generalmente, los suelos agrícolas del clima mediterráneo son pobres en materia orgánica y, por tanto, su fertilidad es variable. Para solucionar este problema se utilizan, entre otros elementos, enmiendas orgánicas de origen urbano que incrementan la materia orgánica del suelo. Adicionalmente, se reciclan residuos urbanos cuya producción se incrementa año a año: los residuos sólidos urbanos (basuras) y los lodos de depuración de aguas residuales. Sin embargo, esta práctica puede no ser siempre beneficiosa, ya que la salud del suelo podría verse afectada y de ahí la necesidad de ser evaluada. Para ello se tienen en cuenta distintos indicadores, entre los cuales, los microbianos cada vez son más empleados por su rapidez, sensibilidad y capacidad de proporcionar más información incluso sobre cambios leves que suceden en el suelo. Estos indicadores pueden ser fisiológicos (biomasa), de actividad (respiración basal) y de diversidad (metabólicos o taxonómicos). Las investigaciones que estudian los cambios que suceden en la microbiota del suelo tras la aplicación de enmiendas orgánicas reportan una gran variedad de resultados, destacando en ocasiones efectos perjudiciales. Debido a ello, consideramos necesario el estudio de los aspectos relacionados con la microbiota cuando se emplean estas prácticas. A partir de un ensayo previo en el que se evaluó el efecto de distintas cantidades de lodos de depuradora en el mismo tipo de suelo agrícola (Gondim-Porto, 2012), hemos pretendido ampliar ese estudio evaluando los efectos sobre la salud del suelo tras la aplicación de una cantidad elevada de basura compostada y de lodos de depuradora (160 Mg ha-1). De esta manera, consideramos que puede ser interesante describir cómo se afecta la salud del suelo con estas prácticas mediante marcadores microbianos (fisiológicos, de actividad microbiana y de diversidad funcional y taxonómica) medidos de forma trimestral a lo largo de, al menos, 24 meses, de tal manera que nos permitiera sugerir qué tipo de enmienda es más favorable para el suelo desde el punto de vista ambiental, así como indicar posibles marcadores de actividad microbiana o de diversidad bacteriana útiles para la detección de la aplicación de enmiendas al suelo...

As such, it is intended to promote widespread application of simulation from domestic (wastewater and sludge) treatment systems to specialised industrial applications. Outputs from the model include common process variables such gas flow and composition, pH, separate organic acids, and ammonium. The structure has been devised to encourage specific extensions or modifications where required, but still maintain a common platform. During development the model has been successfully tested on a range of systems from full-scale waste sludge digestion to laboratory-scale thermophilic high-rate UASB reactors. The model structure is presented in a readily applicable matrix format for implementation in many available differential equation solvers. It is expected that the model will be available as part of commercial wastewater simulation packages.
