Hasta la fecha, la mayoría de los proyectos de MFC se han centrado solo en las comunidades indígenas para apoyar el manejo de la madera, mientras que los estudios científicos se han centrado en el uso del bosque dentro de los sistemas de subsistencia. Teniendo en cuenta que hay aproximadamente 2 millones de habitantes rurales no indígenas en la Amazonía peruana, la huella forestal y los impactos del mercado del manejo forestal realizado por los pequeños propietarios no indígenas sean probablemente mucho mayores de lo que se reconoce. No obstante, se sabe muy poco sobre los sistemas endógenos de los pequeños productores. Más investigacián es necesaria para aumentar nuestro conocimiento sobre la heterogeneidad de estos sistemas y las oportunidades y desafíos que ellos representan.

Obviously, the optimal mix of markets and policies must depend on the varying national and local conditions and, more specifically, on the level of development. The contents of this volume are organized in five Parts. Part I, Editorial Perspectives, briefly reviews the outline of the book and analyses the balanced use of markets and policies to support world forests towards sustainable forest management. Part II reviews changes and trends in society and environment outside the forest sector. After all, the evolution of forestry and forest industries is more dependent on these external changes than on changes internal to the sector. Two important aspects that may strongly affect the future of the forest sector are covered: the potential of wood biomass in replacing oil and the global freshwater outlook. Part III focuses on the importance of forests and is primarily aimed at those outside the forest sector. Based on both, the results and insights gained into how producers are resisting and adapting to these regimes, as well as decades of research carried out in LA rural territories by the participating authors, the book puts forward a baseline for devising new public policies that are better suited to the real challenges of livelihoods, poverty, and environmental degradation in LA. These recommendations are rooted in post-development thinking; they promote territorial public policy with social inclusion and a human’s rights approach.
