E possibile far aumentare il grado di soddisfazione proponendo stimoli che vadano al di l a del classico approccio scolastico? Si sono raccolti i dati mediante un questionario iniziale e un tema. Dopo aver studiato nel dettaglio il rapporto degli allievi di prima liceo con la materia, si e proposto un lungo percorso didattico inusuale, mirato e diversi cato secondo le particolari sensibilit a didattiche della docente e le esigenze emerse dagli studenti. Il lavoro svolto ha avuto come scopo, da un lato, l'esplorazione di un ambito della matematica che sia di interesse degli studenti e, dall'altro, la realizzazione di una breve relazione scritta (Google-Drive), di una presentazione orale che sintetizzasse il lavoro svolto (PowerPoint) e di un cartellone di sintesi da esporre nel corridoio del liceo. Il lavoro di approfondimento e di ricerca degli allievi e stato seguito dai singoli docenti, con particolare riguardo alla necessit a di indirizzarli alle diverse fonti di informazione, di aiutarli nell'organizzare il materiale raccolto e nella gestione del tempo, di seguirli nella fase di stesura e di prestare supporto nell'uso di tecnologie informatiche. Nel caso speci co, tutto il materiale prodotto dagli alunni della 1L e della 1J e stato caricato dalla sottoscritta sulla piattaforma creata in ambito del corso di TIC e condiviso tra le due clas- si. La speranza dei ricercatori, n dal principio, e stata quella che il singolo, il gruppo e in ne il gruppo classe si potessero sentire parte di un progetto collettivo che abbracciasse diverse sezionii dello stesso istituto. In questo lavoro e stato possibile per gli allievi confrontarsi e curiosare tra le ricerche, non solo della propria classe, ma anche delle altre che hanno aderito al progetto.

Book excerpt: In un sondaggio svolto a novembre sottoponendo un questionario a una classe del primo anno del Liceo di Lugano 1 abbiamo indagato quale sia la percezione e il grado di motivazione degli allievi verso lo studio della matematica e quali possano essere gli strumenti per migliorarne la percezione e la motivazione, seguendo le indicazioni del modello ARCS, brevemente descritto in questo lavoro di diploma. Gl'interventi didattici che abbiamo considerati utili a questo scopo sono stati: (1) insistere sul fatto che la matematica non è soltanto arido calcolo ma è soprattutto bellezza di ragionamento e inoppugnabilità di argomentazione, proponendo agli allievi delle attività di dimostrazione matematica, più o meno guidate, adatte al loro livello di maturità cognitiva e disciplinare; (2) proporre agli allievi di quando in quando esercizi abbastanza articolati, assecondando un desiderio espresso nel sondaggio; (3) far svolgere un agli allievi un lavoro di ricerca sul tema "Dove si cela la matematica?", per mezzo del quale gli allievi hanno potuto scoprire aspetti e applicazioni inaspettate della matematica, stimolando in questo modo la loro naturale curiosità; (4) favorire l'utilizzo di strumenti informatici sia durante le lezione sia nello studio a casa, al fine di rendere più chiare situazioni geometriche o di risolvere con l'ordinatore dei calcoli algebrici che talvolta possono risultare piuttosto tediosi. L'esito di questi interventi è stato misurato a maggio con un secondo sondaggio simile al primo. I risultati vengono descritti nella parte finale di questo lavoro: essi sono ambivalenti, nel senso che se da una parte alcuni allievi, soprattutto d'indirizzo scientifico, hanno apprezzato questi interventi didattici, in particolare il lavoro di ricerca, d'altro canto il peso dell'impegno e della fatica richiesti sono emersi nelle risposte date soprattutto dagli allievi d'indirizzo linguistico.

L'analisi quantitativa e qualitativa dei profili motivazionali degli allievi ha preliminarmente caratterizzato le aree di difficoltà individuali, evidenziando in particolare l'alternarsi di dubbi e certezze circa la rilevanza della matematica nel curriculum di studi degli allievi, nonché l'utilità della disciplina nel loro futuro di adulti. Il percorso didattico proposto si prefiggeva di coinvolgere gli allievi ad effettuare, in gruppi, una piccola attività di ricerca su tematiche di loro scelta, tra una rosa di possibili argomenti scelti dal docente, ed esplorare così le molte possibili connessioni della matematica con le altre discipline, nonché scoprirne la pervasività. La valutazione del percorso didattico proposto offre l'occasione di una serie di riflessioni critiche. In parti- colare, una rilettura della proposta suggerirebbe di articolarla attorno ad aree tematiche specifiche, decise a priori dal docente, che abbiano attinenza con il programma di matematica di prima liceo, pur mantenendo la caratteristiche di interdisciplinarietà necessarie a far vivere la materia in tutta la sua affascinante completezza.

Il lavoro presentato parte dall'ipotesi che la motivazione giochi un ruolo importante negli studenti e che facendo leva sulla loro motivazione-volizione sia possibile mettere l'alunno in condizioni ottimali per utilizzare a fondo le proprie competenze. Per valutare la motivazione utilizziamo qui il modello del continuum motivazionale proposto da Mariani (2006), postulando che il desiderio d'implicarsi sia tanto maggiore quanto maggiore è la componente intrinseca della motivazione. In particolare si osserva come, nel caso particolare di problemi tassonomicamente equivalenti legati al Teorema di Pitagora, la competenza degli allievi è emersa in modo maggiore affrontando attività personalizzate e motivanti rispetto ad altre attività neutre. Intervenendo sulla volontà d'implicarsi si porta l'allievo a voler affrontare un'attività spinto da un interesse proprio. Se è vero che non sempre il docente può creare situazioni su misura per ogni studente, è anche vero che una stimolazione corretta è una differenziazione molto vantaggiosa soprattutto per gli allievi più deboli, che acquistano maggiore consapevolezza dei loro mezzi (aumento dell'autostima) e affrontano il problema con un maggior grado d'implicazione.

The GED is an achievement test used to grant the status of high school graduate to anyone who passes it. GED recipients currently account for 12 percent of all high school credentials issued each year in the United States. But do achievement tests predict success in life? The Myth of Achievement Tests shows that achievement tests like the GED fail to measure important life skills. James J. Heckman, John Eric Humphries, Tim Kautz, and a group of scholars offer an in-depth exploration of how the GED came to be used throughout the United States and why our reliance on it is dangerous. Drawing on decades of research, the authors show that, while GED recipients score as well on achievement tests as high school graduates who do not enroll in college, high school graduates vastly outperform GED recipients in terms of their earnings, employment opportunities, educational attainment, and health. The authors show that the differences in success between GED recipients and high school graduates are driven by character skills. Achievement tests like the GED do not adequately capture character skills like conscientiousness, perseverance, sociability, and curiosity. Instead it is re-emerging today as a vision focused not on the future but on the past, not on a future-to-be-created but on an abandoned and undead past that we could call retrotopia. The emergence of retrotopia is interwoven with the deepening gulf between power and politics that is a defining feature of our contemporary liquid-modern world—the gulf between the ability to get things done and the capability of deciding what things need to be done, a capability once vested with the territorially sovereign state. This deepening gulf has rendered nation-states unable to deliver on their promises, giving rise to a widespread disenchantment with the idea that the future will improve the human condition and a mistrust in the ability of nation-states to make this happen. True to the utopian spirit, retrotopia derives its stimulus from the urge to rectify the failings of the present human condition—though now by resurrecting the failed and forgotten potentials of the past. Imagined aspects of the past, genuine or putative, serve as the main landmarks today in drawing the road-map to a better world. Having lost all faith in the idea of building an alternative society of the future, many turn instead to the grand ideas of the past, buried but not yet dead. Such is retrotopia, the contours of which are examined by Zygmunt Bauman in this sharp dissection of our contemporary romance with the past.
