Book Synopsis Confucius and the Analects by : Bryan W. Van Norden
Download or read book Confucius and the Analects written by Bryan W. Van Norden and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-03 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confucius is one of the most influential figures--as historical individual and as symbol--in world history; and the Analects, the sayings attributed to Confucius and his disciples, is a classic of world literature. Nonetheless, how to understand both figure and text is constantly under dispute. Surprisingly, this volume is the first and only anthology on these topics in English. Here, contributors apply a variety of different methodologies (including philosophical, phililogical, and religious) and address a number of important topics, from Confucius and Western "virtue ethics" to Confucius' attitude toward women to the historical composition of the text of the Analects. Scholars will appreciate the rigor of these essays, while students and beginners will find them accessible and engaging.

Book Synopsis In the borderland between song and speech by : Håkan Lundström
Download or read book In the borderland between song and speech written by Håkan Lundström and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of vocal expressions in the borderland between speech and song, based on performances from cultural contexts where oral transmission dominates. Approaches drawn from perspectives belonging to both ethnomusicology and linguistics are integrated in the analysis. As the idea of the performance template is employed as an analytical tool, the focus is on those techniques that make performance possible. The result is an increased understanding of what performers actually do when they employ variation or improvisation, and sometimes composition as well. The transmission of these culture-specific techniques is essential for the continuation of this form of human communication and interaction with the spirit world. By comparative study of other research, the result of the analysis is viewed in relation to ongoing processes in society.

Book Synopsis Mon-Khmer: Peoples of the Mekong Region by : Ronald D.renard
Download or read book Mon-Khmer: Peoples of the Mekong Region written by Ronald D.renard and published by ศูนย์บริหารงานวิจัย สำนักงานมหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mon-Khmer project took a long journey before it was turned into a final product--the first comprehensive collection of articles on Mon-Khmer peoples of the Mekong Region. The project was started in 2001 by the first editor of the book, Dr. Ronald D. Renard, who unfortunately did not see the final product of his valuable work. During 1995-1996, Dr. Ron Renard, as the manager of the UNDP Highland People project, and I travelled to Northeast Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos to explain to representatives of ethnic communities the aim of the project and how the ethnic minorities, many of whom are Mon-Khmer, could be involved and benefit from it. It may well be that this encounter with these ethnic groups made him expand his intellectual interest to study them in addition to the Karen in Thailand whose history of integration into the Siamese state he had studied for his dissertation completed in 1980. According to my last conversation with Ron, it was during the time when he worked for the Journal of Siam Society in the late 1990s that he decided to embark upon the Mon-Khmer project which preoccupied the last part of his academic life.
