Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story is about a young man named Bobby Wayne Brooks who grew up in central Georgia. When his country was drawn into an unwanted war, he enlisted in the navy and served as a navy SEAL. During those few years, he served honorably and exemplified great courage. He received injuries on one mission that were severe enough to end his career in the SEAL program. He was offered a different assignment or a medical discharge. He took the discharge and returned to civilian life. After those few years of fighting, he figured he had had enough excitement and dangerous activities to last a lifetime. But he soon found that his reasoning did not impact the things life had in store for him. As a civilian, he soon found himself involved with the spirit world, which was something he did not understand and really had no desire to learn. Being a Christian, he believed that when a person dies, their soul immediately goes to their eternal reward. But he had heard many stories about people having encounters with the spirits of people who had passed. He did not understand them. Neither did he question the reliability of the stories he heard. He just accepted them and moved on with his life. As it turned out that unwanted encounter with the spirit world brought about an undesired involvement with the criminal world that could have cost him his life. But in the end, he counted the entire episode as very worthwhile since it brought about a beautiful romance that eventually led him to the love of his life, who became Mrs. Bobby Wayne Brooks. They both discovered that time was not a good measuring device when you find the one God intends for you to have.

Book excerpt: Winner of a 2018 Catholic Press Association Award: Sacraments. (First Place). How can Christians grow spiritually in the midst of our sinfulness? How can we transform our lives in a way that allows us to share in the resurrection of Jesus? God has already given us the perfect solution—the sacraments. Whether it is the wound of past hurts, the strain in our relationships, or the stress of daily life, we all need to be comforted and made whole by Christ. In this follow-up to his bestselling Be Healed, Bob Schuchts explains how the sacraments can fuel your emotional and spiritual healing and bring you closer to God. Based on more than thirty-five years of experience as a therapist and decades spent in parish ministry, Schuchts demonstrates how each of the seven sacraments can be a life-changing encounter with Christ, communicated through the power of the Holy Spirit. He pairs each healing sacrament with one of the seven deadly wounds that emanated from original sin in the Garden of Eden. We perpetuate and deepen those wounds each time we sin, but the sacraments are God’s remedy for sin. They give us a way to restore us to wholeness in Christ. In Be Transformed, You’ll discover how each sacrament can help you heal from wounds that can impede your relationships and sense of self-worth. With Schuchts’s help, you’ll learn how: Baptism makes us beloved children of God, healing our wounds of rejection Holy Communion heals our wounds of abandonment by inviting us to share in Jesus’ abiding presence Confirmation overcomes our powerlessness through the power of the Holy Spirit Holy Orders heals wounds of confusion and disorder by re-establishing God’s authority in our lives In marriage, God’s faithful love heals wounds of fear and mistrust Reconciliation restores purity and releases us from shame Anointing of the Sick provides enduring hope to overcome our hopelessness Be Transformed offers all of the tools you need for a fresh understanding of the sacraments, including reflection questions, scripture meditations, prayers, and inspiring stories. You’ll come away hungry for the sacraments in a way you never knew possible.

Book excerpt: Rob Grant's new novel is a revelation. After INCOMPETENCE we would all have expected a killingly funny satire. And in its satire of our obsession with body image, of how the media makes us what we are FAT is certainly that. But in its depiction of Grenville, a fat man at his wits end with the need to be thin; of Hayleigh, a teenage girl obsessed with her terror of being fat and of Jeremy, the self-absorbed, self-adoring 'conceptualist' employed to promote the government's new 'Fat Farms' Rob Grant has given us, yes a very, very funny book, but also an immensely moving and personal novel about how we all feel about our bodies. As Grenville deals with the humilation and daily indignity of being fat, as Hayleigh struggles to deal with her anorexia and as Jeremy comes to terms with the dangerous lies at the centre of the government's new health regime FAT takes us on a hilarious and thought-provoking journey through our all-consuming obession with fat. This is a hilariously moving, movingly hilarious novel and marks a massive step-change in Rob Grant's growth as a writer. Here is a hugely commerical new voice in mainstream, high concept, high in poly-saturates, commercial fiction. It's also safe to say that with this new novel, he's writing about what he knows ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many observers of Kenya’s complicated history see causes for concern, from the use of public office for private gain to a constitutional structure historically lopsided towards the executive branch. Yet efforts from critics and academics to diagnose the country’s problems do not often consider what these fiscal and political issues mean to ordinary Kenyans. How do Kenyans express their own political understanding, make sense of governance, and articulate what they expect from their leaders? In For Money and Elders, Robert W. Blunt addresses these questions by turning to the political, economic, and religious signs in circulation in Kenya today. He examines how Kenyans attempt to make sense of political instability caused by the uncertainty of authority behind everything from currency to title deeds. When the symbolic order of a society is up for grabs, he shows, violence may seem like an expedient way to enforce the authority of signs. Drawing on fertile concepts of sovereignty, elderhood, counterfeiting, acephaly, and more, Blunt explores phenomena as diverse as the destabilization of ritual “oaths,” public anxieties about Satanism with the advent of democratic reform, and mistrust of official signs. The result is a fascinating glimpse into Kenya’s past and present and a penetrating reflection on meanings of violence in African politics.

Book excerpt: The Tome of God traces the history of the Numerist Religion, starting with the arrival from the stars to the final suppression by the Church in the seventeenth century. The work encompasses the eras of Pythagoras, Pharaoh Akhenaten, the destruction of Jerusalem, the Crusades, and the genocide against the Cathars in France. This beautiful religion is peaceful and is the only universal faith. It preaches – and proves – that God does not speak to mankind in words, but in mathematics. God is not name but Number! Says the author, “In contrast to other religious works, which are inherently violent, this work demonstrates that violence proves their fallibility. Its abiding tenets are based on equality between man and woman, and the need to abandon the tribe and become universal.”
