Stallo, conceptsofmoa'ern Pig/sits, p. 16.'it't bfeeae' {seemsnas'fgthjngh the Church of England were instinctively acting upon principles which it had not, indeed, distinctly apprehended, but of which, never theless, it seems, as a whole, vaguely aware. But these principles are now gradually working themselves out and demanding recognition. And the development will be no mere blind or chance one. There is, on the contrary, more than enough in the facts to warrant our believing that God is really leading us, and that a real evolution of a higher type of Church life is taking place in our midst. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church Problems: A View of Modern Anglicanism I regret that the pressure of his public duty has hindered Lord Selborne from writing the article which in the first announcement of this volume was assigned to him. His Lordship's loyalty to the English Church is so well known and proved that special value would have attached to his co-operation. I have to thank my friend Mr. Whitmore for undertaking the article on Disendowment instead Of Lord Selborne. Also I have to thank my friend and neighbour the Rev. S. Kirshbaum, m.a., of Barking, for finding time, in the midst Of arduous parochial work, to prepare an index, which will, I think, be found convenient to readers. Book Synopsis The Heritage of Anglican Theology by : J. I. Packer
Download or read book The Heritage of Anglican Theology written by J. I. Packer and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical and Theological Reflections on the Anglican Church from J. I. Packer The Anglican Church has a rich theological heritage filled with a diversity of views and practices. Like a river with a main current and several offshoot streams, Anglicanism has a main body with many distinct, smaller communities. So what constitutes mainstream Anglicanism? Influential Anglican theologian J. I. Packer makes the case that "authentic Anglicanism" is biblical, liturgical, evangelical, pastoral, episcopal (ordaining bishops), national (engaging with the culture), and ecumenical (eager to learn from other Christians). As he surveys the history and tensions within the Anglican Church, Packer casts a vision for the future that is grounded in the Scriptures, fueled by missions, guided by historical creeds and practices, and resolved to enrich its people.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Puritan and Anglican: Studies in Literature The Puritan writers with whom I deal are such as to render the title "Puritan and Anglican" not inexact, although many the Puritan party were loyal members of the Anglican Communion. In choosing my subjects 1 have been influenced by two things: first, I have spoken only of writers with whom I have dwelt long and intimately; and secondly, among such writers I have spoken only of those who move me to speak through some personal interest which I feel in the men or their work. Hence without scruple or regret I omit many great names, being ere content to indulge my own likings. I have desired to remain close to my subjects, a many passages, for example, of what I have written 1 Herbert and Vaughan, it is Herbert and Vaughan ho are in fact the speakers; but I did not think) necessary to encumber my pages with a crowd of references to scattered poems from which their thoughts ad phrases have been collected. Book Synopsis Oxford High Anglicanism by : James H. Rigg
Download or read book Oxford High Anglicanism written by James H. Rigg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford High Anglicanism: And Its Chief Leaders This book is the result of many years' study. It is nearly forty years since I wrote a volume entitled Modern Anglican Theology, which is now in its third edition, and which dealt specially with the views of the "Broad Church," and particularly of the Coleridgean section of the clergy, at that time apparently on the ascendant scale in England. That volume contains evidence that I had already, at that date, begun the serious study of Oxford Anglicanism. During the years which have followed I have often been asked to write what my friends spoke of as a companion book to that volume, dealing dispassionately and thoroughly with modern Anglicanism of the Oxford school. Till lately, however, the materials for a thorough treatment of the subject historically did not exist, and therefore, though I followed closely the developments of the school, so far as I was able, and from time to time wrote articles on such phases of the history as could be best and most suggestively dealt with, I did not, till a few years ago, contemplate at all seriously the undertaking which was now and again still suggested to me; and I was the more indisposed to make any attempt in that direction, because my duties and engagements left me very little leisure for systematic special work.
