Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of United States History The old method of teaching history by as signing a certain number of pages in the text book to be memorized, is, we are glad to be able to say, pretty generally a thing of the past, having been discarded by all progressive educators. The topical method has found favor because it is the method which devel ops the student's individuality, and makes it possible for him to compare the views of differ ent authors, thus doing away with the diffi culty some teachers experience from diversity of text books. It is the best because it teaches the pupil to think and compare as well as to remember facts. When carried to its full de velopment the topical method becomes the outline method, which combines with the ads vantages possessed by the topical method many which it does not possess. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline and Notes on United States History To furnish the student the method and material of thought which shall yield the highest discipline and culture, is not an easy task. This question constantly confronts one: How much can the teacher safely do? How far shall a discussion of the Central Idea and its application in working out the problem be carried? Shall the outline present the logical relations of the sub ject, or shall the student be required to discover them After the Introduction, the thinking and organization of the subject 18 done mainly by the student the work of the teacher being directive. This book was written for use in this school. It is adapted, however, to use in High Schools, and such other schools as place the history of our country on a higher plane than can be reached by the Grammar Grades. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods and Outlines in United States History Now why should we study history at all? First, it possesses the greatest guidance value among the several branches. There is much truth in the old saying, History repeats itself, and that ages differ more in kind than in degree. Where one age develops a fact of civilization in a certain way, or works out an advanced position for man, it will do it much the same way another time. There are certain inevitable truths controlling the ages, and when an age repeats itself, the corre sponding truth will be found leading its move ments. The things that killed Greece would kill America; the force that united the world under Rome, would unite the world again. The ele ments that destroyed Rome, would destroy any empire in any age. A late profound scholar and historian has said The present is the fruit Of the past, and the germ of the future. NO work can stand unless it grows out Of the real wants Of the age and strikes firm root in the soil Of history. No one who tramples on the rights Of a past gen cration can claim the regard of its posterity History will disregard him who disregards her. Set at naught the lessons Of history, and no man shall wield any lasting influence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of United States History, for Use in the General Course in United States History American history is the story oi a most dramatic transformation. The curtain is rung up on a continent lying untouched, just as natural forces acting through millions of years of geologic history have chiseled it. It is inhabited by a few tribes of wandering Indians who traveled to it from Asia by way of Alaska no one knows when. The Indians are in the main without civilization. They live in an environment where great areas are as fertile as any in the world, where minerals are to be found in luxuriant abundance and where the climate is nowhere surpassed in stimulating productive effort. Yet the Indians are letting this priceless Opportunity slip. As the play unfolds, the penalty they pay is practical annihilation. Three thousand miles across the Atlantic in Europe is a climatic area as healthful and as stimulating as that of much of the United States. In fact, northern Europe and the Great Lake basin and northern Missis sippi Valley in America are the two areas in the world where the climate most stimulates productive effort. When the American drama opens, European peoples acting under the stimulus of this climate and utilizing intelligently the rich natural resources of their environment have emerged from barbarism into civilization. They are obviously of racial stock superior to that of the Indians who had opportunities practically as great. It is they, and not the Indians, who are destined to develop the untouched continent. The plot, therefore, is to be the story of the transference of European peoples and civilization to the wild country of America. American civilization is to be based primarily on this. But we see to the west across the vast Pacific three other civilizations, in India, in China and in Japan, older than that of Europe. They seem stagnant; they are not aggressive, yet we cannot help wondering what the plot would be if the Pacific were narrow and the Atlantic broad and if these lethargic Orientals should begin' taking possession of the new continent. The de mand for it by those pupils who had gone out to teach, was so great, that the edition was soon exhausted. This revised edition has been prepared for the double purpose Of supplying the classes in the Normal School, and of meeting the wants of those teachers who may find it useful to them in their schools. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High Lights in United States History: A Help Book for Students of United States History There are outline books in American history almost without number. Why another? Outlines are not rarely of more value to teacher than to pupil. They at times defeat their purpose by going into a wealth of rather confusing detail. It has been my intention to omit much which they usually contain. If this little book proves of any service, and I hope that it will, it will be as much for what it leaves out as for what it includes. A student of any elementary subject does not remember everything. There are some things which he ought to remem ber, certain important features which are the very groundwork of his subject. I have attempted to pick out those things in American History which are important and to arrange them in orderly fashion. Essentials have been emphasized; details have been left to larger works. Brief explanations have been added wherever they might be helpful. An attempt has been made to treat the topics in the order of their occurrence. However, the student of history realizes that to be chronological is not always to be logical. For this reason the time limits of different periods have not always been strictly observed. Highlights IN U. S. History is designed as a help book, to be used in connection with the regular texts. It has been prepared with the pupil chiefly in mind, yet with a feeling that whatever helps the pupil must unfailingly do as much for the teacher. It may also be used as a reference in reading, as a guide in following a lecture course, or as an aid in reviewing for examinations. I am indebted to many books for the facts and. Ideas set forth. Chief among these I must mention: Elson's History of the United States; Epochs of American History, by Thwaites. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of United States History IN writing this book, the author has had in mind the presentation Of the essential facts in our history in a clear, brief manner, with such explanations, by means of maps, pictures, and foot-notes, as the size of the work permitted. In its preparation the pupil's point Of view and peculiar needs have been kept constantly in mind, and the author wishes to express his gratitude to Miss Ginn for her very helpful suggestions and advice. She also kindly drew many of the maps which are inserted in the text, prepared the topical reviews which follow the several divisions of the book, and devised the questions that are printed in Appendix V. He further wishes to express his Obligation to Miss Eva G. Moore for many thoughtful suggestions, and especially for her aid in the preparation Of the bio graphical notes and Of Appendix IV with its accompanying map. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abridged History of the United States: Or Republic of America The author, while improving the work, by new illustrations (as the Chart of Early land-titles, and the American Temple of Time), has not suffered the important study of our country's history to be run down in her hands, by putting into a synopsis, where every inch of room is needed for essential events, either mere biographies, pictures to amuse, or imperfect likenesses of the great and good, which diminish reverence by destroying the mind's ideal of moral beauty. Let the students of this history study, not play, and they will be rewarded by a noble advance in education. E. W. Time when the accumulated mass of knowledge is great, beyond the human capacity, service is done to science, by clear ar rangement and devices addressed to the eye. If the faculties are en abled to seize and hold fast the frame-work of an important subject, future facts will naturally find and keep their own place in the mind, and the whole subject rest there in philosophical order. Not only is this important, as respects the particular study thus ac quired; but as regards intellectual habits and general improvement. To accomplish these ends, with regard to the history of the Uni ted States, is one of the main objects of the present work. Its plan is chronographically exhibited in front of the title page. The maps, included between the periods of the work, coincide in time with the branches of the subject; and the sketches on the maps picture the events there expressed in words. But most minds find it dificult to remember dates, though ever so well arranged; and hence experienced educationists recommend that the memory should not in this respect be overtaxed; but that dates should rather be kept at hand in books, to be consulted as occasion requires. Hence, the importance of arrangements in printed works, by which dates may stand prominent, and be easily found. A cur sory glance at the chronological table, and along the margin of this work, may satisfy the observer that this task has been executed with faithfulness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States During recent years there has been much written and much said about making the study of history and civics in the ele mentary schools something more than committing to memory dates, facts and events. Many newspapers and educational journals and many of those educators Who talk publicly on school questions have criticised severely the results secured from the time devoted to history and civics in the grammar schools. The method used and the lack of proper preparation on the part of the teacher have been held responsible for the poor results secured in these subjects. It has been customary to hold the teacher responsible for the method used and for her poor preparation, and thus to place the entire blame on her. Many have promptly and justly replied that they cannot be expected to expend from two to three thousand dollars in securing a higher education for the purpose of receiving the small salaries paid in the elementary schools. They have also replied - and this is even more to the point - that not being specialists in history and civics, they cannot, With any degree of success, teach these subjects by the topical method When every grammar school history text-book in print adopts, almost entirely, the cut and-dried chronological-event method. In relation to all these conditions, special attention is called to the fact that in this book the topical treatment is used Without any reserve What ever. No teacher can use this book as a text-book and use any other than the topical method, and no pupil can study this book without becoming interested in the real spirit of our history and having cultivated in him the desire to perform to the best of his ability the duties of American citizenship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States: An Outline of Political History, 1492-1871 To an Englishman, particularly if he is visiting America, an outline Of the political history of the United States may not be unwelcome. An American, being familiar with the main facts and the general relations Of parties, would look for details. It is, therefore, for English rather than American readers that this sketch is intended. If it comes into the hands Of an American, his liberality will make allowance for the position of an Englishman who regards the American Commonwealth as the great achieve ment of his race, and looks forward to the voluntary reunion Of the American branches of the race within its pale, yet desires to do justice to the mother country, and to render to her the meed of gratitude which will always be her due. Should this volume find acceptance it may be followed by a companion volume on the same scale, and treating, necessarily with the same succinctness, the recent history of parties, and the questions of the present day.
