Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of the Principles of Modern Theosophy Brotherhood - the elder brothers of the Great Orphan Humanity - have preserved till now: the system which furnishes the key to every religion wherein is buried the truth about our nature and our destiny. And as a young servant of that great band of Silent Workers, the author has only followed in the steps of others who, like him, would wish the western nations to know them selves and to some extent the plan of that small por tion of Cosmos in which this little globe swings round the sun. So, with whatever faults, many or few, this book may have, both the author and I are glad of its appearance, for we firmly believe that this is but once more the sounding the same call to our fellows that we helped to sound before in prior lives on this poor globe, the least significant of the seven. For if through this volume but three immortal pilgrims shall be turned to the light held out by the great Brothers, they will be three more gained for the Army of the Future. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1897 edition. Excerpt: ... the result of his own self-devised efforts. Now at present man is--on this planet (the earth) and in this Round (the fourth)--in the fifth of these races, and therefore, without recognizing his development as a whole, we shall find him to be generally in possession of five-fold attributes. We see him a creature of five extremities, a veritable" five pointed star," as the Rosicrucians symbolized him--with five fingers, five toes, five senses, five organs of sense. His development is not therefore above the fifth stage--that of the human soul or the mind--having as yet as little perception of the sixth, or spiritual soul, as he has of a sixth sense. To put it in other words; the Monad or true ego, has succeeded after many ages of effort, in evolving, or perceiving in itself, those qualities pertaining to the first five "principles," and it has yet, before it can claim permenent rest after its toils, to evolve the other two.. But man is only in the fourth Round on this planet, and although a partial development of the whole seven principles is made in each Round, yet the key-note for the period will be the principle corresponding to that Round. Therefore, as this is the fourth, so also the fourth principle, that of Desire--for good or for bad--is the real key-note of man's being at present. Great indeed is he who can surmount it, and, passing ahead of his time, become a Buddha! From all this it will be evident that with a full comprehension of each of the "seven men" which are bound together in the human being, an understanding of their nature, and a knowledge of their heredity, man becomes a god, having dominion over the seven elements of nature--each of which is powerfully related to a "principle "--and reflecting in himself the whole...

We cannot speak oi it as dis covered, for in truth it has always been known to mankind, though sometimes temporarily forgotten in certain parts of the world. There has always existed a certain body of highly-developed men - men not of any one nation, but of all the advanced nations - who have held it in its fulness; and there have always been pupils of these men, who were specially studying it, while its broad principles have always been known in the outer world. This body of highly developed men exists now, as in past ages, and Theosophical teaching is pub lished to the Western world at their instigation, and through a few of their pupils. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Theosophy To comprehend the significance of great World changes, before Time has fully done his work, is difficult. While mighty events are still in their formative period the future is obscure. But our in ability to outline the future cannot blind us to the unmistakable trend of the evolutionary forces at work. One thing that is clear is that our boasted Christian civilization is the theater in which has been staged the most un-christian war of recorded history and in which human atrocity has reached a point that leaves us vaguely groping for a rational explanation of it. Another obvious fact is that the more than twenty nations involved have been forced into measures and methods before unknown and which wholly transform the recognized function and powers of governments. With these startling facts of re ligious and political significance before us thoughtful people are beginning to ask if we are not upon the threshold of a complete breaking down of modern civilization and the birth of a new order of things, in which direct government by the people throughout the entire world will be coincident with the rise of a universal religion based on the brotherhood of man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Theosophy: A Very Condensed Outline Theosophy is a word that comes from the Greek words meaning Divine Wisdom. The divine wisdom is that which teaches man the way to reach God by grow ing into his image and likeness, developing the deific powers within him. But it is also the wisdom or knowledge which includes all other knowledge, which means all the sciences, forms of philosophy and ethics, as would necessarily be the case if, as we affirm, it came from the Logos or God of our solar system through His agents. Theosophy, then, may be considered as science, religion, philosophy and ethics as seen from God's point of view. This would also further mean they were to be considered not solely from the point of view of their present status, but also from that of their origin and their destiny. We shall present the subject in very brief outline under these four headings, referring read ers at frequent intervals to the works which deal in authoritative detail with the subjects touched upon. Theosophy as Science at once gives the origin of science, its rationale, its future and the synthesis of its parts. It considers all material and spiritual things within the solar system as made up of two elements. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
