Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Outline of Developmental Physiology was first published in the Dutch language in 1948, while the first English edition appeared in 1954. It was meant in the first place for readers who, though interested in its subject and having some general knowledge of science, were not acquainted with more than the first elements of biology. This new edition has been brought up to date by taking into account the literature up to about the middle of 1963. The book opens with a discussion of the fusion of sperm and egg. This is followed by separate chapters that explain the series of processes that transform the initially fairly homogeneous structure of the egg into a system with a considerable degree of spatial multiplicity. This book may be used as a preliminary introduction into the field in undergraduate classes. A list of references has been added in the interest of those who might want to refer to the original publications on some special problem. Moreover, a glossary of scientific terms has been included for the benefit of those readers who are not professional biologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative developmental physiology is a growing discipline examining a diversity of organisms as they transform from single cells to mature, reproductive individuals. This collection of original, innovative essays emerged from a Roundtable on Comparative Developmental Physiology held in Glen Rose, Texas in the summer of 2002. This meeting brought together investigators studying the physiology of developing animals in an effort to identify the field's potential contributions to biology. The participants honed in on common emerging themes and future goals, which are reflected in the chapters within. The nascent community of comparative developmental physiologists was challenged to amplify the power of data collection and tool development by focusing on a few select model organisms, while still employing the power of the broader, more traditional comparative approach. Evolution has provided comparative developmental physiologists with remarkable biological diversity, which they have used to investigate a broad range of questions critical for understanding how life works. This goes beyond the basic nuts and bolts of cellular mechanisms to the functional whole, from the mechanistic level to behavior within and between organisms. The union of developmental biology with the breadth of comparative physiology holds much promise for a deeper understanding of evolutionary processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Testis, Volume I: Development, Anatomy, and Physiology focuses on the study of the testis. Particular concerns include embryology, morphology, physiology, cytology, and anatomy of this complex organ. Composed of contributions of authors that are divided into nine chapters, the book outlines the development of mammalian testis. Areas discussed include differentiation of the testis; genital glands and ducts; and postnatal development. The text highlights the relationship of this organ, along with the scrotum and epididymis, to the nervous system. The book discusses as well the supply of blood; secretion of fluid; and regulation of temperature of the testis. Concerns include testicular lymph and lymphatics; testicular fluid; and rete testis. The discussions proceed with an examination of the intertubular tissue of the testis. The selection ends with the discussions on the structure and functions of the testis. Noted are the presence of different cells and tissues that compose this organ and how these influence its functions. The selection is a good source of information for readers interested in studying the complex structure and functions of the testis.

Book Synopsis The Promise of Adolescence by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book The Promise of Adolescence written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.
