Book Synopsis Preserving the White Man's Republic by : Joshua A. Lynn
Download or read book Preserving the White Man's Republic written by Joshua A. Lynn and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2019-04-10 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Preserving the White Man’s Republic, Joshua Lynn reveals how the national Democratic Party rebranded majoritarian democracy and liberal individualism as conservative means for white men in the South and North to preserve their mastery on the eve of the Civil War. Responding to fears of African American and female political agency, Democrats in the late 1840s and 1850s reinvented themselves as "conservatives" and repurposed Jacksonian Democracy as a tool for local majorities of white men to police racial and gender boundaries by democratically withholding rights. With the policy of "popular sovereignty," Democrats left slavery’s expansion to white men’s democratic decision-making. They also promised white men local democracy and individual autonomy regarding temperance, religion, and nativism. Translating white men’s household mastery into political power over all women and Americans of color, Democrats united white men nationwide and made democracy a conservative assertion of white manhood. Democrats thereby turned traditional Jacksonian principles—grassroots democracy, liberal individualism, and anti-statism—into staples of conservatism. As Lynn’s book shows, this movement sent conservatism on a new, populist trajectory, one in which democracy can be called upon to legitimize inequality and hierarchy, a uniquely American conservatism that endures in our republic today.
Book Synopsis Science, Sexuality, and Race in the United States and Australia, 1780s-1890s by : Gregory D. Smithers
Download or read book Science, Sexuality, and Race in the United States and Australia, 1780s-1890s written by Gregory D. Smithers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book combines transnational history with the comparative analysis of racial formation and reproductive sexuality in the settler colonial spaces of the United States and British Australia. Specifically, the book places "whiteness," and the changing definition of what it meant to be white in nineteenth-century America and Australia, at the center of our historical understanding of racial and sexual identities. In both the United States and Australia, "whiteness" was defined in opposition to the imagined cultural and biological inferiority of the "Indian," "Negro," and "Aboriginal savage." Moreover, Euro-Americans and Euro-Australians shared a common belief that "whiteness" was synonymous with the extension of settler colonial civilization. Despite this, two very different understandings of "whiteness" emerged in the nineteenth century. The book therefore asks why these different racial understandings of "whiteness" – and the quest to create culturally and racially homogeneous settler civilizations – developed in the United States and Australia.

This book was released on with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1885, when former commander of the Army of the Potomac George Brinton McClellan published a criticism of the Lincoln administration's interference with McClellan's prosecution of the American Civil War, former U.S. Representative William Kelley was incensed. In this long-forgotten book, Kelley takes McClellan to task in detail. Considered one of the most honest and hard-working members of Congress during the Civil War, Kelley used official war documents, statements from surviving participants, and his own memory of his time as a founder of the Republican party and friend of Abraham Lincoln to make his compelling case. Ulysses S. Grant stated after his presidency, "McClellan is to me one of the mysteries of the war." Yet Grant had sympathy for what McClellan's burdens were early in the war. He remains so today. Brilliant, vain, and insubordinate, his stature was forever tarnished by his early mistakes and failures to strike decisive blows. For the first time, this long-out-of-print book is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample.
