Book Synopsis The Old Man in the Mountain and Other Stories by : Fairbanks
Download or read book The Old Man in the Mountain and Other Stories written by Fairbanks and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring widely diverse settings-from the wilds of the Australian Outback to urban adventures to biblical lands-this collection of short stories, poems, and other writings celebrates what it is to be Australian. It encompasses love, revenge, debauchery, wonder, loss, and uncertainty, but a common thread of hope emerges from the colourful and eccentric writings of bush author Fairbanks. An elder Aboriginal storyteller regales a group of eager tourists with an ancient story of betrayal, loss, and clever deception by "The Old Man in the Mountain." In "Tjamiti Ngunytji," an American youth is rescued by a character living in a remote outback Aboriginal community. After the devastating Black Saturday Bushfire destroyed his Victoria home and manuscripts, Fairbanks was inspired to capture the fleeting reflections of such an experience in "The Smouldering Stump." Life is, has always been, and will continue to be a complex thing, shaped by friendship and love bonds, ugliness and conflict, anticipation and uncertainty, comedy and joy, tragedy, mystery, and more. Above all, there is hope and beauty for those who look for it. The Old Man in the Mountain and Other Stories celebrates the many threads in the colourful tapestry of life with the quirky, sometimes irreverent Aussie sense of humour.

Book Synopsis The Old Prostitute and Other Stories by : Manisha Roy
Download or read book The Old Prostitute and Other Stories written by Manisha Roy and published by Chiron Publications. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories of this collection were written over a span of several decades beginning in 1985 and ending in 2022. A few of them were translated by Manisha Roy from her mother tongue, Bengali. Despite the geographical and other contextual differences, the narrative shifted and at times translated itself as if the author traveled easily between different landscapes—both external and internal. Roy’s academic training as a cultural anthropologist and later professional training in Analytical Psychology no doubt left undeniable influence in her wandering in the fascinating world of fictional imagination. Nearly half of the stories are short—an experiment attempted with the genre of flash fiction. However, the strength and charm of the narrative are not affected by the choice of the experiment. Like her translation Roy is able to transcend such structural issues of creating fiction. Readers will find reading these stories a new and unique experience.

Book Synopsis An Appalachian Farmer's Story by : Diane Asséo Griliches
Download or read book An Appalachian Farmer's Story written by Diane Asséo Griliches and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to the generally negative view of Appalachia as a subculture of hopeless poverty and deprivation, this book shows a very different picture. Roy Anderson was a resourceful though poor farmer, but also a talented cabinetmaker, musical instrument maker, and lay preacher, and at age 80 he tells with modesty the story of his life. Roy's words are accompanied by evocative black and white photographs?descriptive of his life with his sister on the farm, his cabinet shop, the community, and his church life. They give a pictorial dimension to a hard but enterprising life lived with dignity on one of the few remaining small farms in a particular community in southwestern Virginia. Roy begins by telling of his earliest memories. As these are becoming things of the past, we can all learn a great deal about life in Roy's time and place while gaining insight into an inspiring life in a rich American culture most of us would like to know more about.
