Book excerpt: When Moses conversed with God at the burning bush, he asked God, "Who shall I say sent me?" God replied, "Tell them 'I am' sent me." In our burning bush prayer time when we talk to God will we take time to listen to what he wants to say? When we pray it is also important to listen to what God wants to say to us. There's a saying, "We have two ears and one mouth. We therefore should listen twice as much as we talk." There is purpose in our being. God has a plan for each of us. Prayer time with God is a time for talking and listening. How can we know what God wants us to do if we never take time to listen to what he has to say? If we are about God's business, we should try to find out the what and the why of his business. There is only one way to the Father, through Jesus Christ, and there is only one way we can discover what he wants and expects us to do. And that is through prayer and Scripture. The Scripture says, "This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it." There are twenty-four hours in a day. Can we not spare him time in prayer? Jesus knew what his father wanted him to do because he kept in touch with his Father in prayer. God has called on us and left a message for us to call him (see Jeremiah 33:3) He's waiting to hear from us. This is an invitation we can't live without.

What role can faith and religion play in our modern lives? In this thoughtful and inspiring new book, pastor and New York Times bestselling author Timothy Keller invites skeptics to consider that Christianity is more relevant now than ever. As human beings, we cannot live without meaning, satisfaction, freedom, identity, justice, and hope. Christianity provides us with unsurpassed resources to meet these needs. Written for both the ardent believer and the skeptic, Making Sense of God shines a light on the profound value and importance of Christianity in our lives.

Book excerpt: Diane Becker is flipping through her mail after a long day when she comes across an envelope with a familiar return address. Although she is almost seventy, Diane is suddenly transported back to a time when she was newly single and in the middle of something that felt so right, but was unfortunately very wrong. As she opens the envelope and views an invitation to return to Honey Water, Missouri, for an anniversary party, Diane becomes lost in her memories of James Hoover, the man she loved completely for over fifteen years all while knowing he belonged to someone else. Now with a chance to revisit her past and achieve closure, peace, and maybe a little payback, Diane decides to take other women who also loved Jamie on a journey back to Honey Water, where it all began. As the ladies wind their way back three decades to the origin of their passionate escapades with the same man, Diane and the others reveal surprising details about their lives, loves, and transformations. But as Diane arrives in Honey Water, she has no idea James has already arranged his final act of love for her. Open Invitation is the compelling story of forbidden love as a woman journeys back into her past, with the help of others, to right a wrong and finally heal her broken heart.

Book excerpt: 2020 International Book Awards, Finalist: Spirituality—Inspirational 2019 Independent Press Awards, Winner: Spirituality 2019 Association of Catholic Publishers, Second Place: Prayer 2019 Best Book Awards, Finalist: Spirituality—Inspirational Every person needs a retreat sometime—to replenish the soul and renew life’s focus. But what if you can’t spend time away from home? What if, instead, you could go on a personal at-home prayer retreat with one of the most experienced and best-loved spiritual directors of our day? An Invitation to Love provides a practical and adaptable sequence of prayer sessions on the great commandment of the Christian faith: to love God and love our neighbor. All other aspects of a healthy and hopeful life grow from our practices of love. When we experience God’s love for us, we can respond with a growing love for God. Loving God will transform us into people who can love our neighbors, too, whoever they are. The voice that speaks in these pages so personally and warmly is that of William A. Barry, SJ, who for decades has gently accompanied people in their prayer. His understanding of Scripture, expertise in nurturing spiritual growth, and joyful confidence in God’s desire for our friendship prepares a welcoming and walkable path to conversation with God and renewal in our hearts.

But any hope of that dissolves one wild night, when she loses herself in the arms of the most irresistible--and unobtainable--man in all of England. For when they are discovered in a position as compromising as it is pleasurable, she has no choice but to accept his proposal. Avowed bachelor Anthony Craven, Earl of Wickham, never meant to seduce an innocent like Melissa. Yet now that the damage is done, it does seem like she'd make a very convenient wife. After all, she is so naive he won't have to worry about ever being tempted. Or so he thinks, until the vows are spoken and they are left alone--and his new bride reveals a streak just as brazen and unrestrained as his own. . .

At the dawn of the new Millennium, AN INVITATION TO JOY brings together a selection of John Paul's messages with the most poignant photographs documenting his life both before and after his election to papacy. For the first time, here is an illustrated devotional keepsake album that distills the essence of his message and shows the intimate connection between his words and deeds. Three main sections, THE HUMAN FAMILY, THE PEOPLE OF GOD, THE DIGNITY OF THE HUMAN PERSON, encompass the themes that are most important to the Pontiff. Resonant passages on everything from love and family, suffering and evil, freedom and human rights, other religions and the role of women are coupled with striking photographs. A fourth section, A LIFETIME OF DEVOTION, provides a portrait of the Pope's entire life in pictures, from his early childhood to his current day-to-day activities in the Vatican. Reflecting the Pope's all-embracing outreach to people around the world, AN INVITATION TO JOY will inspire both those inside and outside the Catholic Church.
