Book Synopsis Semiconductor Laser Engineering, Reliability and Diagnostics by : Peter W. Epperlein
Download or read book Semiconductor Laser Engineering, Reliability and Diagnostics written by Peter W. Epperlein and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference book provides a fully integrated novel approach to the development of high-power, single-transverse mode, edge-emitting diode lasers by addressing the complementary topics of device engineering, reliability engineering and device diagnostics in the same book, and thus closes the gap in the current book literature. Diode laser fundamentals are discussed, followed by an elaborate discussion of problem-oriented design guidelines and techniques, and by a systematic treatment of the origins of laser degradation and a thorough exploration of the engineering means to enhance the optical strength of the laser. Stability criteria of critical laser characteristics and key laser robustness factors are discussed along with clear design considerations in the context of reliability engineering approaches and models, and typical programs for reliability tests and laser product qualifications. Novel, advanced diagnostic methods are reviewed to discuss, for the first time in detail in book literature, performance- and reliability-impacting factors such as temperature, stress and material instabilities. Further key features include: practical design guidelines that consider also reliability related effects, key laser robustness factors, basic laser fabrication and packaging issues; detailed discussion of diagnostic investigations of diode lasers, the fundamentals of the applied approaches and techniques, many of them pioneered by the author to be fit-for-purpose and novel in the application; systematic insight into laser degradation modes such as catastrophic optical damage, and a wide range of technologies to increase the optical strength of diode lasers; coverage of basic concepts and techniques of laser reliability engineering with details on a standard commercial high power laser reliability test program. Semiconductor Laser Engineering, Reliability and Diagnostics reflects the extensive expertise of the author in the diode laser field both as a top scientific researcher as well as a key developer of high-power highly reliable devices. With invaluable practical advice, this new reference book is suited to practising researchers in diode laser technologies, and to postgraduate engineering students.

Download or read book Sub-Picosecond Laser for Investigating Oscillator-Waveguide Interactions written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project purchased a diode-pumped, mode-locked Ti:Sapphire short-pulse laser system that would produce ultrashort pulses in the 800 nm wavelength range. Acquiring the laser makes it possible to investigate the interaction between molecular or nanoparticle resonances and the propagating electromagnetic surface modes (i.e., surface waves) supported by nearby planar thin-film structures. Investigations in the linear optical regime have already demonstrated that this interaction produces surprisingly strong linear optical effects. Acquiring the requested short-pulse laser system enables the existing ARO-sponsored research program focused on linear effects to be extended to include the nonlinear regime.

Book Synopsis Flexible Generation of Picosecond Laser Pulses in the Infrared and Green Spectral Range by Gain-Switching of Semiconductor Lasers by : Sina Riecke
Download or read book Flexible Generation of Picosecond Laser Pulses in the Infrared and Green Spectral Range by Gain-Switching of Semiconductor Lasers written by Sina Riecke and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Picosecond laser pulses find diverse applications for example in material processing as well as in analysis and sensing. Fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy in particular requires pulses with variable repetition rate and moderate pulse energy. While suitable pulses in the red and blue spectral range can be provided by gain-switched laser diodes, the generation of green laser pulses requires a more elaborate setup based on second harmonic generation. The starting point is a gain-switched infrared distributed-feedback laser diode. The optimization of the laser design and the operating conditions allows to generate spectrally narrow picosecond pulses with a peak power above 1 W. Different gain media are compared for further amplification of these pulses, and options for the miniaturization of the master-oscillator power-amplifier system are explored. The resulting intense infrared pulses are then used for second harmonic generation of green picoseconds pulses. Their peak power of above 5 W exceeds all previous green pulse sources with variable repetition rate. In terms of pulse energy and background suppression, the reported green pulses are thus ideally suited for fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy
Book Synopsis Optical Phenomena in Semiconductor Structures of Reduced Dimensions by : D.J. Lockwood
Download or read book Optical Phenomena in Semiconductor Structures of Reduced Dimensions written by D.J. Lockwood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remarkable advances in semiconductor growth and processing technologies continue to have a profound impact on condensed-matter physics and to stimulate the invention of novel optoelectronic effects. Intensive research on the behaviors of free carriers has been carried out in the two-dimensional systems of semiconductor heterostructures and in the one and zero-dimensional systems of nanostructures created by the state-of-the-art fabrication methods. These studies have uncovered unexpected quantum mechanical correlations that arise because of the combined effects of strong electron-electron interactions and wave function confinement associated with reduced dimensionality. The investigations of these phenomena are currently at the frontiers of condensed-matter physics. They include areas like the fractional quantum Hall effect, the dynamics of electrons on an ultra short (femtosecond) time scale, electron behavior in quantum wires and dots, and studies of electron tunneling phenomena in ultra small semiconductor structures. Optical techniques have made important contributions to these fields in recent years, but there has been no coherent review of this work until now. The book provides an overview of these recent developments that will be of interest to semiconductor materials scientists in university, government and industrial laboratories.
