This book was released on 1978 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made to determine the feasibility of using polymer-concrete (PC) for rapid repair of airfield pavements. The polymer-concrete studied was a mixture of dry aggregate and a methyl methacrylate monomer. Tests were conducted to isolate the variables that affect the strength and polymerization time of PC. Laboratory and field tests were conducted to test the strength, durability, and feasibility of polymer-concrete repairs. The major variables affecting the polymerization time of PC were found to be temperature and chemical composition. Monomer formulations were developed that permitted polymer-concrete to be polymerized in less than one hour at a temperature range of 0 to 100 F. An investigation into the variables that affect strength resulted in several findings. The tests showed that dry aggregate (less than 1% moisture) is very important for strength. The strength of PC was found to increase with stronger aggregate and smaller pore volume. The temperature of the polymer-concrete was found to affect the strength to a great extent. The higher the temperature the greater the reduction of strength. (Author).

Book excerpt: An investigation of a high-strength, fast setting mixture of methyl methacrylate and dry aggregate was conducted. The resulting polymer-concrete (PC) was very strong, durable, and bonded excellently to concrete. Tests were conducted to determine the variables affecting the polymerization time and strength of polymer-concrete. Field tests were conducted to interstate highways and a major airport taxiway which demonstrated the feasibility of making rapid polymer-concrete repairs at a reasonable cost. Laboratory tests of a 3-foot by 6-foot area repaired by PC and an individual PC slab under repeated loadings of simulated truck and aircraft traffic demonstrated the excellent strength and durability of the material. A cost analysis found the cost of monomer to be approximately $10/cubic foot for most repairs. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report describes a series of tests to evaluate a system for rapidly repairing airfield pavement using polymer concrete (synthetic polymer plus aggregate), thermally cured by microwave power. The technique, developed by the Syracuse University Research Corporation (SURC) for highway maintenance, uses a truck-mounted 50-kilowatt microwave generator to irradiate areas patched with polymer concrete. Test results indicate that the polymer concrete can be cured in a fraction of an hour, bonds well to old pavement material, is very strong, and possesses other qualities which make it naturally suited for airfield use.
Book Synopsis Airfield Damage Repair (ADR) ; Polymer Repair of Airfields Summary of Research by :
Download or read book Airfield Damage Repair (ADR) ; Polymer Repair of Airfields Summary of Research written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several resin-based binders produced by Ashland Chemical were investigated for use with indigenous aggregates for rapid repair of damaged airfield pavements. The resin was required to be non-flammable and have at least 30 minutes of working time. Only a 1:1 blend of Pliodeck TPO Membrane adhesive and Pliodeck PVC Membrane adhesive were found to meet these requirements. The effects of aggregate type, temperature, and moisture on the polymer concrete behavior were evaluated. Small scale field tests were conducted to optimize mixing procedures, and cylindrical specimens were made to determine compressive strength, tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and Poisson's ratio. Polymer concrete made with Pliodeck was found to be an impractical material for rapid runway repair because it has a low modulus of elasticity and poor workability. The implementation of Pliodeck polyurethane polymer concrete was not recommended because of the very short working times associated with the coarse aggregate mixtures as well as aggressive foaming and segregation problems.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water-compatible polymer concrete (PC) formulations have been developed which appear to have potential for use in all-weather rapid repair procedures for bomb-damaged runways. Formulations consisting of furfuryl alcohol, water-saturated aggregate, dry silica flour, promoters, and catalysts produced composites with properties suitable for repair purposes when mixed and polymerized at temperatures from -20 to 30 C. Calcium-unsaturated polyester complexed PC also produced excellent properties. However, the early strength criteria, (2000 psi (13.78 MPa) at 1 hr) and other requirements such as compatibility of the formulation with water and practical working times could be attained only at temperatures>20 deg C. This system can be polymerized under water. Studies of the polymerization reaction mechanisms, materials properties, costs, and potential placement methods were performed. (Author).

This book was released on 2007 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military must have the ability to rapidly deploy troops and equipment anywhere in the world as part of a contingency operation. Recent military operations have highlighted the critical need for rapid repair procedures and materials for military use on substandard, in-theater airfields. The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center is currently addressing these problems through a 6-year demonstration-based research and development program called JRAC (Joint Rapid Airfield Construction). This study involves the development of a method using rapid setting grouts and recycled concrete pavement (RCP) to repair portland cement concrete pavements. A laboratory study was conducted to evaluate material properties in order to gain an understanding of expected field performance. Eight full scale repairs were constructed using two rapid setting grouts, two types of equipment, and two concrete slabs. The repairs were successfully trafficked with simulated C-17 aircraft wheel loads to verify the structural capacity and, ultimately, the procedures.

Book Synopsis Criteria for Polymer Concrete on Airport Pavements by : Krish Pandalai
Download or read book Criteria for Polymer Concrete on Airport Pavements written by Krish Pandalai and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of polymer concrete (PC) has generated a lot of interest among researchers during the past decade. This is due to the many advantages that polymer concrete pavement offers compared to regular portland cement concrete. The advantages of polymer concrete, when compared to portland cement concrete include, quick curing and setting, reduced moisture sensitivity and permeability and improved mechanical properties resulting in reduced pavement thickness to support the same load. These advantages will lead to attractive life cycle cost benefits. Material properties and mix designs for PC with epoxy, methylmethacrylate (MMA) and Polyester as the binder material have been investigated and presented in part I of this report. Part II contains pavement thickness design charts, developed for various aircraft, quality control methods, construction procedures and cost analysis. It has been shown in this study that increased material cost of PC can be offset by the reduced thickness of the pavement. In order to develop life cycle cost information, it is necessary to obtain field performance data of PC pavement, especially in the composite design mode. Keywords: Compressive stress, Modulus of elasticity. (kr).
