Book excerpt: This study was undertaken to develop information on which a knowledgeable decision could be based concerning the use of titanium for construction of thin walled LOX tanks. The primary goals were to investigate the reactions of titanium alloys with oxygen under a variety of conditions associated with space vehicles, and to determine if the titanium could be treated or coated in some fashion to eliminate such hazards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mechanism for the LOX-Titanium reaction was proposed during a previous investigation (WADD TR 60-258). It was postulated that the impact of a titanium surface immersed in LOX generates sufficient heat to gasify a pocket of oxygen. In addition, the impact tends to compress the oxygen at the local impact sites. A rapid reaction occurs at the fresh surface formed by the impact. The present investigation has established that a fresh titanium surface, formed by rupture of a tensile specimen, would react in gaseous oxygen under approximately 100 psig pressure at temperatures as low as about -250F. These results tend to substantiate the proposed mechanism. Means of eliminating or minimizing the reaction of titanium when ruptured in gaseous oxygen were investigated. The addition of HF as a gas to the oxygen resulted in some inhibition. Argon reduced the reactivity of oxygen gas by dilution. Coating the tensile specimens with fluoride-phosphate or with vapor-deposited aluminum did not affect the reactivity. These same coatings furnished some protection to titanium from reactivity during impact under LOX.

Book excerpt: The initial stages of reaction of unalloyed titanium, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti8Mn, and beta-III titanium alloy specimens with oxygen, nitrogen and atmospheres bearing these gases has been studied over the temperature range from 800 to 1300C. The kinetics of these reactions were analyzed for specimens subjected to linear heating rates in the range from 0.5 to 100C/s. Mathematical techniques were devised for modeling: (1) the oxygen uptake by unalloyed titanium during heating, and (2) the deposition of the chemical heat of reaction into oxidizing substrates.

Book excerpt: High temperature corrosion is a phenomenon that occurs in components that operate at very high temperatures, such as gas turbines, jet engines and industrial plants. Engineers are constantly striving to understand and prevent this type of corrosion. This book examines the latest developments in the understanding of high temperature corrosion processes and protective oxide scales and coatings. Part one looks at high temperature corrosion. Chapters cover diffusion and solid state reactions, external and internal oxidation of alloys, metal dusting corrosion, tribological degradation, hot corrosion, and oxide scales on hot-rolled steel strips. Modern techniques for analysing high temperature oxidation and corrosion are also discussed. Part two discusses methods of protection using ceramics, composites, protective oxide scales and coatings. Chapters focus on layered ternary ceramics, alumina scales, Ti-Al intermetallic compounds, metal matrix composites, chemical vapour deposited silicon carbide, nanocrystalline coatings and thermal barrier coatings. Part three provides case studies illustrating some of the challenges of high temperature corrosion to industry and how they can be overcome. Case studies include the petrochemical industry, modern incinerators and oxidation processing of electronic materials. This book is a valuable reference tool for engineers who develop heat resistant materials, mechanical engineers who design and maintain high temperature equipment and plant, and research scientists and students who study high temperature corrosion and protection of materials. Describes the latest developments in understanding high temperature corrosion Presents the latest research by the leading innovators from around the globe Case studies are provided to illustrate key points

Book excerpt: A systematic investigation has been conducted to evaluate the role of oxygen in modifying the microstructure and properties of Ti-6Al-2Cb-1Ta-1Mo alloy. Variation of oxygen 0.075 to 0.290 wt. percent was found to significantly reduce the prior-beta grain size without discernable changes in the transformed widmanstatten structure or crystallographic texture in the beta processed condition. Resulting from alpha stabilization effect, oxygen increases the beta transus temperature at an approximate rate of 13 degree C per 0.1 wt. percent increase in oxygen content. Oxygen, within the range of this investigation, solution strengthens the alloys by linearly increasing the overall hardness and tensile properties. Variation in oxygen was found to alter both low temperature resistivity and superconducting temperature. For example, the superconducting temperature is found to increase from 3.1K to 4K when oxygen concentration changes from 0.075 to 0.290 wt. percent.

Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on understanding the influence of defect sites in titanium dioxide that drive many types of thermal and photochemical reactions. Two of the most common defects in vacuum are titanium interstitials and oxygen vacancies. Molecular oxygen fills oxygen vacancies and creates oxygen adatoms. We broadly investigate reduction and oxidation reactions of oxygenates driven by titanium interstitials and oxygen adatoms. First, we focus on the thermal chemistry of oxygen adatoms with butyrophenone and find that it reacts with the adatoms to form a strongly bound complex. The large difference in mobility between complexed and uncomplexed butyrophenone, and the corrugated nature of the TiO2(110) surface plane, allows a confined one-dimensional gas to persist, which is characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Next, we focus on the reductive coupling of benzaldehyde to stilbene that is driven by titanium interstitials. The diolate intermediate of the reaction is identified by STM and the thermodynamic preference of molecular oxygen to interact with titanium interstitials is exploited to selectively reverse the benzaldehyde diolate intermediates. Additionally, we investigate the photo-oxidative coupling of methanol to methyl formate, the photo-oxidation of butyrophenone and the photo-stability of benzoate. Finally, we identify a water splitting mechanism on reduced titania that creates oxygen adatoms. We demonstrate that the photo-generated oxygen adatoms thermally react with titanium interstitials to make TiOx islands and drive the photo-oxidation of formaldehyde and butyrophenone. Methods used include temperature programmed reaction spectroscopy, STM, and density functional theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal dilation anomalies occur when certain titanium alloys are repeatedly cycled through the allotropic transformation. These anomalies were related to the orientations of the alpha and beta phases which form during the transformation. On heating or cooling the Ti-7Al-3Cb0.06 O2 and Ti-7Al-3Cb-0.12 O2 alloys through the transformation temperature range, the thermal dilation curves may show an expansion, contraction, or no discontinuous length change, depending on the orientation of the phases. The type of expansion behavior may have a significant effect both on toughness and weldability. Impact strengths of the 7Al-3Cb titanium alloys at -80 F can be improved 3 to 5 foot-pounds by slowly heating and cooling the alloys through the transformation in vacuum. This improved impact strength is believed to be related to a decrease in hydrogen content. (Author).
