Book excerpt: The emissometer is an extension of the multiproperty apparatus which is a powerful and unique tool for simultaneously measuring ten thermophysical properties on the same sample of an electrically-conducting solid and of studying its behavior under various environmental conditions. The apparatus features rapid time-to-temperature and data acquisition under minicomputer control yielding state-of-the-art accuracy. Performance evaluation tests of the emissometer are presented. These tests deal with veiling glare, blackbody cavity quality, and temperature distribution in the heating tube and sample. In addition spectral emissivity measurements to at least 10 micrometers have been made on tantalum (reference material), SiC, Si3N4, graphite and carbon-carbon composites from 1500 to 2400 K or their respective degradation temperatures. The new data on the ceramics provides some understanding on their high temperature behavior including the effect of fabrication process and impurities.

Book excerpt: Emissivity: Characteristics, Determination and Applications opens with an overview of a variety of remote sensing retrieval methods of land surface emissivity from space. The authors provide some theoretical background about land surface emissivity and recall various retrieval methods.During the atmospheric hypersonic re-entry of a space vehicle, the extremely high temperatures generated in the shock layer between the bow shock and the vehicle lead to very high temperatures at the wall, the values of which depend mainly on the total heat flux impinging the surface, and its emissivity. The higher the emissivity of the surface, the lower the temperature that is achieved. Thus, in order to perform reliable temperature predictions at the surface during space re-entry into the atmosphere, the authors suggest that proper knowledge of material surface emissivity is mandatory. In the penultimate chapter, the emissivity due to neutrino-pair production in e+e- annihilation in the context of the 331RHν model is calculated in a way that can be used in supernova models.Lastly, a photoacoustic cell is constructed to view two different surfaces through a pair of out of phase optical chopping wheels records the difference in radiation fluxes from the two surfaces. The point at which a lock-in amplifier records a null in the photoacoustic signal is where the radiation fluxes from the two surfaces are identical, permitting the relative emissivities of the two surfaces to be determined.

Book excerpt: A technique is described for the simultaneous in situ measurement of film thickness, refractive index, total normal emissivity, visible-light scattering, and reflectance of contaminant films on a highly reflective liquid-nitrogen cooled, stainless steel substrate. Emissivities and scattering data are obtained for films of water, carbon dioxide, silicone oil, and a number of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons as a function of film thickness between zero and 20 microns. Of the contaminants investigated, water has by far the greatest effect on emissivity, followed by silicone oil, aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, and carbon dioxide. The emissivity increases more rapidly with film thickness between zero and 2.5 microns than at thicknesses greater than 2.5 microns. Scattering of visible light changes very little below 2 microns thickness but increases rapidly with thickness beyond 2 to 3 microns. The effect of contaminant films on passive radiation coolers is discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report was developed under a SBIR contract. This paper describes a heat flux-based method for measuring emissivity of a surface. In this method the emissivity of a surface is calculated using direct measurement of the heat flux passing through the surface. Unlike storage-based calorimetric methods, this method does not require application of known amounts of heat to the surface or the temperature history of a known amount of thermal mass to calculate the surface emissivity. Application and operation of this method is much simpler than calorimetric methods as it does not require careful thermal insulation of the heat radiating body from the surroundings. This technique allows emissivity measurements of the newly developed variable emissivity surfaces with significantly lighter and energy efficient measurement equipment that can operate for long term space missions. In this study, a commercially available thermopile heat flux sensor was used to measure the emissivity of a black paint and a variable emissivity surface, Electrostatic Switched Radiator (ESR). This paper details the concept, experimental setup, and the experiment results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central problem of temperature-emissivity separation is that we obtain N spectral measurements of radiance and need to find N + 1 unknowns (N emissivities and one temperature). To solve this problem in the presence of the atmosphere we need to find even more unknowns: N spectral transmissions [tau]{sub atmo}([lambda]) up-welling path radiances L{sub path}↑([lambda]) and N down-welling path radiances L{sub path}↓([lambda]). Fortunately there are radiative transfer codes such as MODTRAN 3 and FASCODE available to get good estimates of [tau]{sub atmo}([lambda]), L{sub path}↑([lambda]) and L{sub path}↓([lambda]) in the order of a few percent. With the growing use of hyperspectral imagers, e.g. AVIRIS in the visible and short-wave infrared there is hope of using such instruments in the mid-wave and thermal IR (TIR) some day. We believe that this will enable us to get around using the present temperature - emissivity separation (TES) algorithms using methods which take advantage of the many channels available in hyperspectral imagers. The first idea we had is to take advantage of the simple fact that a typical surface emissivity spectrum is rather smooth compared to spectral features introduced by the atmosphere. Thus iterative solution techniques can be devised which retrieve emissivity spectra [epsilon] based on spectral smoothness. To make the emissivities realistic, atmospheric parameters are varied using approximations, look-up tables derived from a radiative transfer code and spectral libraries. By varying the surface temperature over a small range a series of emissivity spectra are calculated. The one with the smoothest characteristic is chosen. The algorithm was tested on synthetic data using MODTRAN and the Salisbury emissivity database.
