This book was released on 1978 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrated cobalt(II) and nickel(II) trifluoromethanesulfonates have been prepared by a previously reported procedure, and have been characterized for the first time as [Co(H2O)6] (CF3SO3)2H2O and [Ni(H2O)6] (CF3SO3)2. These formulations are based on analyses, near-infrared spectra, and on measurements of the ligand field electronic spectra and the magnetic susceptibilities. The metal ions are high-spin and octahedrally coordinated in both compounds. Methods have been developed for the preparation of the pure anhydrous cobalt(II) and the previously unknown nickel(II) trifluoromethanesulfonates from the hydrates. By determination of the d-d spectra and the magnetic moments, these are found to contain high-spin octahedrally coordinated metal cations, and therefore contain coordinated trifluoromethanesulfonate anions. The near-infrared spectral absorptions of these anions have been observed. The magnetic moment reported by previous workers for anhydrous cobalt(II) trifluoromethanesulfonate corresponds to the value found in this work for the hydrate. By vacuum line methods, pressure-composition data have been obtained for the triethylamine-cobalt(II) and nickel(II) trifluoromethanesulfonate systems. Breaks in the 25° isothermal phase diagrams show that very unstable adducts containing two molecules of triethylamine per metal ion are formed in each system. These could not be isolated. Various experimental methods for the preparation of quinuclidine complexes were investigated. The one found to be successful involved mixing, by Schlenk techniques, acetonitrile solutions of the anhydrous metal trifluoromethanesulfonate and of an excess of quinuclidine, evaporating the solvent, and removing the excess quinuclidine by sublimation. The solid complexes obtained in this way were characterized as [Co(QUIN)4] (CF3SO3)2 and [Ni(QUIN)2(CF3SO3)2] by their analyses, ligand field spectra, magnetic moments, and the near-infrared absorptions of the anions. As expected, quinuclidine is found to be a better ligand than its more sterically demanding analogue, triethylamine. The quinuclidine complexes of cobalt(II) and nickel(II) trifluoromethanesulfonates are much more stable. In the case of the cobalt complexes, the metal ion has a greater ligation number for quinuclidine than for triethylamine. In these solid salts and complexes, the trifluoromethanesulfonate ion shows a much greater tendency to coordinate than had been expected, based on a previous study using it in aqueous solution.

Book Synopsis Polymer or Macrocycle? Cobalt Complexes of Ditopic 2,2':6',2"- Terpyridine Ligands with Flexible Spacers by : Emily Kate Harris
Download or read book Polymer or Macrocycle? Cobalt Complexes of Ditopic 2,2':6',2"- Terpyridine Ligands with Flexible Spacers written by Emily Kate Harris and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2010-07-28 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reaction of transition metal ions with ditopic ligands containing two 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine units linked by flexible spacers can give metallosupramolecular polymers, discrete metallomacrocycles or mixtures of the two. The outcome of the coordination depends on the precise reaction conditions as well as the nature of the spacer and the transition metal salt. This thesis is concerned with the reaction between cobalt(II) salts and bis(2,2':6',2"-terpyridine) ligands in which the metal-binding domains are linked by flexible oligo(ethylene glycol) spacers. An initial study of the ligands and several model mononuclear bis(2,2':6',2"-terpyridine)cobalt(II) and (III) complexes gave some insight into the solid state and solution properties of these systems, and PGSE NMR spectroscopy was found to be a useful tool for determination of the size of both the ligands and the cobalt(III) complexes in solution. The reaction of the ditopic ligands with cobalt(II) acetate tetrahydrate in pure alcohol was found to cause the decomposition of the ligand and the formation of a mononuclear bis(4'-alkoxy-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine)cobalt(II) complex. This reaction was extended to monotopic 4'-substituted-2,2':6',2"-terpyridines and can be considered as a reaction giving rise to polymer end-capping units, thus influencing the final outcome of the coordination. The effect of the anion on the coordination was considered further, and the speciation of mono- and bis(2,2':6',2"-terpyridine)cobalt(II) complexes in solution was investigated using the 4'-methoxy-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine ligand. The product mixtures were found to depend heavily on the anion, solvent and initial ratio of ligand to metal salt. Similar behaviour was observed for a model ditopic ligand. The presence of the mono(2,2':6',2"-terpyridine)cobalt(II) complexes within a system containing the ditopic ligands would also provide polymer end-capping units, influencing the speciation of these mixtures. Finally, a detailed study of the product mixtures obtained from the reactions of the ditopic ligands with cobalt(II) salts revealed a complex dependence of the speciation of many bis(2,2':6',2"-terpyridine)cobalt(II) complexes on the ligand, anion, solvent, concentration and other seemingly minor reaction parameters. Using the PGSE NMR spectroscopic technique, the sizes of some of the metallomacrocyclic species present in the equilibrium mixtures could be determined. These measurements were in excellent agreement with X-ray crystallographic data. Analysis of initial product mixtures using the same technique suggested that the initial kinetic products of the complexation are significantly larger species.

Book excerpt: Some nickel(II) and cobalt(II) salts have been found to react readily with 1,2-bis(mercapto)-o-carborane in the presence of stabilizing phosphorous ligands or the tetraethylammonium cation to yield square planar MS2P2 and MS4(2) complexes. Electronic spectra of the nickel complexes are discussed. (Author).

Book Synopsis Introduction to Magnetochemistry by : Alan Earnshaw
Download or read book Introduction to Magnetochemistry written by Alan Earnshaw and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Magnetochemistry provides an introduction to the more important aspects of magnetochemistry. The measurement of magnetic moment has been one of the most consistently useful to coordination chemists. For teaching purposes it provides a simple method of illustrating the ideas of electronic structure, and in research it can provide fundamental information about the bonding and stereochemistry of complexes. The book contains six chapters covering topics such as free atoms and ions, transition metal complexes, crystal field theory, second and third row transition metal complexes, antiferromagnetism, and spin-pairing of electrons. The final chapter describes important experimental methods and then to shows briefly the way in which the problems of interpretation may be tackled.
