This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychoanalysts agree on the therapeutic importance of the analysis of transference. This book represents the first empirically rigorous study of whether the analysis of transference produces lasting changes in a patient's personality by examining the case of Mrs. C., the most widely studied psychoanalytic treatment. A study of FRAMES (Fundamental Repetitive and Maladaptive Emotion Structures)as they appear over the course of a psychoanalytic treatment can test if the analysis of transference is curative. FRAMES are formal representations of recurrent patterns of a patient's behavior, extracted from transcripts of sessions. The emotion expressions that form the raw material of FRAMES result from the psychological processes that underlie Referential Activity, a measure of "the capacity to express all manner of nonverbal experience, particularly emotional experience, in verbal form." The referential process mediates alteration of maladaptive emotion structures in psychoanalytic treatment. The present study serves as some of the strongest empirical evidence to date of the efficacy of psychoanalytic techniques.
Download or read book Dora written by Sigmund Freud and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1997-11 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An appealing and intelligent eighteen-year-old girl to whom Freud gives the pseudonym "Dora" is the subject of a case history that has all the intrigue and unexpected twists of a first-rate detective novel. Freud pursues the secrets of Dora's psyche by using as clues her nervous mannerisms, her own reports on the peculiarities of her family, and the content of her dreams. The personalities involved in Dora's disturbed emotional life were, in their own ways, as complex as she: an obsessive mother, an adulterous father, her father's mistress, Frau K., and Frau K.'s husband, who had made amorous advances toward Dora. Faced with the odd behavior of her family and friends, and unable to confront her own forbidden sexual desires, Dora falls into the destructive pattern of a powerful hysteria. in this influential and provocative case history, Freud uses all his analytic genius and literary skill to reveal Dora's inner life and explain the motives behind her fixation on her father's mistress. -- from back cover.

This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Research: Evidence-Based Practice and Practice-Based Evidence continues the important work of the first book published in 2009 by Humana Press (Handbook of Evidence-Based Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: Bridging the Gap Between Science and Practice). This landmark title presents in one volume significant developments in research, including neuroscience research, in psychodynamic psychotherapy by a team of renowned clinician-researchers. The demand for ongoing research initiatives in psychodynamic psychotherapy from both internal and external sources has increased markedly in recent years, and this volume continues to demonstrate the efficacy and effectiveness of a psychodynamic approach to psychotherapeutic interventions in the treatment of psychological problems. The work in this volume is presented in the spirit of ongoing discussion between researchers and clinicians about the value of specific approaches to specific patients with specific psychiatric and psychological problems. Multiple forms of treatment interventions have been developed over the past fifty years, and this volume makes clear, with firm evidence, the authors’ support for the current emphasis on personalized medicine. Groundbreaking and a major contribution to the psychiatric and psychologic literature, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Research: Evidence-Based Practice and Practice-Based Evidence provides firm grounding for advancing psychodynamic psychotherapy as a treatment paradigm.

Book Synopsis On Learning From the Patient by : Patrick Casement
Download or read book On Learning From the Patient written by Patrick Casement and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On Learning from the Patient is concerned with the potential for psychoanalytic thinking to become self-perpetuating. Patrick Casement explores the dynamics of the helping relationship - learning to recognize how patients offer cues to the therapeutic experience that they are unconsciously in search of. Using many telling clinical examples, he illustrates how, through trial identification, he has learned to monitor the implications of his own contributions to a session from the viewpoint of the patient. He shows how, with the aid of this internal supervision, many initial failures to respond appropriately can be remedied and even used to the benefit of the therapeutic work. By learning to better distinguish what helps the therapeutic process from what hinders it, ways are discovered to avoid the circularity of pre-conception by analysts who aim to understand the unconscious of others. From this lively examination of key clinical issues, the author comes to see psychoanalytic therapy as a process of re-discovering theory - and developing a technique that is more specifically related to the individual patient. The dynamics illustrated here, particularly the processes of interactive communication and containment, occur in any helping relationship and are applicable throughout the caring professions. Patrick Casement's unusually frank presentation of his own work, aided by his lucid and non-technical language, allows wide scope for readers to form their own ideas about the approach to technique he describes. This Classic Edition includes a new introduction to the work by Andrew Samuels and, together with its sequel Further Learning from the Patient, will be an invaluable training resource for trainee and practising analysts or therapists."--
Book Synopsis Growing Through the Erotic Transference by : Frances H. Moore
Download or read book Growing Through the Erotic Transference written by Frances H. Moore and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book offers an in-depth case study of the erotic transference experienced by a female analysand with her male analyst, exploring how the shifting phases of erotic transference help the analysand to understand, rediscover and redefine herself with transformative growth. The first half of the book tells the story of the analysis, which is richly imbued with the erotic from the beginning. It describes the complexity of the relationship between analyst and analysand, and how the patient is able to grow through experiencing, analysing and progressing through the erotic transference. The second half of the book consists of five reflections, highlighting relative blind spots in the current thinking on the erotic transference and countertransference. The author explores the dynamics of power, potency and erotic turn-on between male analyst and female analysand and considers the implications for the erotic transference when the patient is a sexual abuse survivor. She also explores the nature of 'transference love' itself: whether it is 'real love' and how both members of the dyad can surrender to it enough to grow, while not losing their bearings. The final reflection considers the role of the patient's voice in the psychoanalytic literature and argues the need for more of such accounts to enrich our understanding of this vital area. Writing as the patient, the author is able to share a remarkable, frank and revealing glimpse into their personal experience of analysis, making this book essential reading for psychoanalysts, psychotherapists and anyone interested in understanding analysis in more depth"--
Book Synopsis From Psychoanalytic Narrative to Empirical Single Case Research by : Horst Kächele
Download or read book From Psychoanalytic Narrative to Empirical Single Case Research written by Horst Kächele and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2011-05-20 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognition of the need for empirical research and interest in its findings are growing in psychoanalysis. Many psychoanalysts now acknowledge that research is imperative to try to deal with the factors propelling the diminution in status and prestige of the discipline, as well as the number of patients in intensive psychoanalytic treatment. In addition, there is increased pressure to expose and acquaint candidates with analytic research in the course of their education. From Psychoanalytic Narrative to Empirical Single Case Research revivifies the experimental potential of psychoanalysis by focusing a number of structured research methods on a single case study. Drs. Kächele, Schachter, and Thomä, in tandem with the Ulm Psychoanalytic Process Research Study Group, bring their formidable tools and knowledge to bear on Amalia X, a former patient of Dr. Thomä’s, whose case history is well-documented, preserved and available for formal empirical study. After providing an intensive review of the problematic aspects of clinical psychoanalytic research and an exegesis on the use of the case study itself, the specific case history of Amalia X, which dominates and centers the remainder of the book, is thoroughly examined. The following two chapters – utilizing clinical and linguistic models, respectively – deconstruct Amalia’s psychopathology along a variety of methodological axes in an effort not only to uncover the roots of her presenting symptoms, but also to reify and validate the strange bedfellows of psychoanalysis and empiricism in general. The book would be incomplete, however, without its final chapter, which provides suggestions and insights into the clinical applications and implications of their combined research.

Representing a broad spectrum of psychoanalytic perspectives, including object relations, Kleinian, Jungian and Lacanian thought, the contributors highlight similarities and differences in their approaches to the erotic in transference and countertransference, ranging from love and sexual desire to perverse and psychotic manifestations. Erotic Transference and Countertransference offers ways of understanding the erotic which should prove both useful and thought-provoking.
