Book excerpt: The researcher sought out to analyze the perceived leadership style of a collegiate coach for an elite level collegiate volleyball program, and how athletes within that program perceive those behaviors. The purpose of the current study was to compare the self-perceived leadership behaviors of a head coach at the collegiate level and compare this self-perception to the athlete’s perception of the coach’s behaviors and leadership style. The Coaching Behavior Score for Sport (CBS-S) was administered to the collegiate student-athletes and support staff members once the season was completed. The self-perceived survey of the Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS) was administered once to only the Head Coach after the season was completed. Results from the LSS showed higher scores in Training and Instruction and Positive Feedback. Results also showed lower scores in Democratic Behavior and Autocratic behavior. The subgroup which was scored around average was Social Support. Results from the CBS-S showed significant scores confirming the coach’s self-perception of leadership in the subscale groups of physical training and conditioning, technical skills, and competitive strategies. The results from the CBS-S and LSS offered a unique finding where the Head Coach the lower end scores in the subgroups Democratic and Autocratic behavior, the CBS-S results showed how the participants perceived the Head Coach higher in the subscale groups Personal Rapport, Goal Setting, and Mental Preparation. These results provide insight into a leader who can achieve a high level of task-oriented behaviors while also being perceived to be athlete oriented.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to advance the research in the leadership field of intercollegiate athletics at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II (NCAA DII) level. Particular focus was on the transactional and transformational leadership behaviors, as the independent variables, perceived by NCAA DII athletic directors, as to the relationship to defined organizational outcomes. Conceptual underpinnings were supported by Bass and Avolio's (2004) leadership theory as measured by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) survey. The dependent variables were determined by the athletic-graduation rates and athletic team standings, based upon institutional data. The secondary focus was to gain an understanding of the demographic characteristics of the study group. The statistical findings of the study did not reveal that any significant differences existed between the leadership behavior factors and the defined organizational outcomes. Statistical results did find that relationships existed between IAD leadership factors and demographic characteristics. The IADs with more tenure at their current institution and at the NCAA DII level, utilized significantly more transactional and transformational leadership behaviors supporting Bass and Avolio's (2004) Augmentation Model of Transactional and Transformational Leadership. The overall philosophy of balance between academic and athletic achievement, as defined by the NCAA DII, supports and emphasizes that further research should be conducted at the NCAA DII level. If a problem exists for collegiate athletic leaders to balance academic and athletic achievement, it is recommended that these academic and athletic performance outcomes become part of the equation of the organizational leadership effectiveness definition and debate. It is recommended that higher education officials provide degree programs that teach a combination of higher education leadership theory and understanding plus sport management practices, where typically it is separated in one degree program or the other. Leadership practitioners in this collegiate athletic organizational context are recommended to further the research.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship and difference between how NCAA Division I, team sport student-athletes perceive their own leadership behaviors and how their head coaches perceive the same student-athletes' leadership behaviors. In addition, further analysis examined perceptions between student-athletes and head coaches based on the student-athletes' gender and academic year in school. The study included 121 NCAA Division I, team sport student-athletes and their respective head coaches from two institutions in the Midwest. One of the institutions was a medium sized, four-year, co-educational private university and the second was a large sized, four-year, coeducational public university. The first research question examined the demographic profile of the collegiate student-athletes participating in this study. The second research question studied the relationship between how NCAA Division I student-athletes perceived themselves demonstrating the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2008; Kouzes & Posner, 2013; Kouzes & Posner, 2014) and their respective head coaches' perceptions of these behaviors. Using Pearson product-moment correlation, three significant relationships existed between student-athletes and their head coaches for Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, and Enable Others to Act. The third research question undertook paired samples t-tests to investigate the difference between how NCAA Division I student-athletes perceived themselves as demonstrating the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2008; Kouzes & Posner, 2013; Kouzes & Posner, 2014) and how their respective head coaches perceived them demonstrating these behaviors. Paired samples t-tests revealed significant differences between student-athletes and head coaches for each practice, Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. The fourth research question explored the difference between how NCAA Division I female and NCAA Division I male student-athletes perceived themselves as demonstrating the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2008; Kouzes & Posner, 2013; Kouzes & Posner, 2014) and how their respective head coaches perceived them demonstrating these behaviors. The researcher used ANOVAs and paired samples t-tests to analyze the question. ANOVAs revealed statistically significant differences for the practices of Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. Paired samples t-tests revealed statistically significant differences for both genders with all Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership. The final question studied the difference between how NCAA Division I student athletes, by academic year in school, perceived themselves as demonstrating the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2008; Kouzes & Posner, 2013; Kouzes & Posner, 2014) and how their respective head coaches perceived them demonstrating these behaviors. Similar to the fourth question, the researcher used ANOVAs and paired samples t-tests to analyze the data. ANOVAs revealed seven significant differences for four of the practices, Model the Way, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. In addition, paired samples t-tests showed differences in 18 out of a possible 20 cases involving academic year in school and The Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership. In conclusion, scores between student-athletes and coaches for Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, and Enable Others to Act showed a small, positive relationship; therefore, as student-athletes' scores increased so did their head coaches' scores. ANOVAs revealed significant mean differences in scores between female student athletes and their respective head coaches to male student-athletes and their head coaches. For all five practices, paired samples t-tests showed that the difference between mean student-athletes scores and mean head coaches scores were significant and that gender was not a differentiator when comparing scores for the practices. The independent variable with the most influence was academic year in school. Six-of-the-seven significant findings revealed smaller mean differences in scores between the upper-level student-athletes and coaches compared to lower-level student-athletes and coaches. Finally, significant differences existed in 18 of 20 possible cases comparing the mean scores of student-athletes to their head coaches for the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership when examining student-athlete academic year in school.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to a) examine leadership traits of effective Athletic Directors and b) determine the differences and similarities between NCAA Division I, II,III, and NAIA University Presidents’ and Athletic Directors’ assessments of the methods of leadership required for the position of Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, with particular regards to Autocratic, Democratic, Positive Feedback, Training and Instruction, Social Support, and Situational Consideration Behaviors, which are concepts drawn from Zhang and others’s (1997) Revised Leadership Scale for Sports (RLSS), an instrument specifically designed to measure research on sports-specific leadership behavior. A purposive sampling design was implemented. Fourteen participants with extensive experience in NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA intercollegiate athletics were recruited to secure expert insight. Participants included four University Presidents and four Athletic Directors, one each from NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA institutions. Remaining participants included two Conference Commissioners, two Head Coaches, and two Senior Athletic Administrators, all from NCAA Division I institutions. Semistructured interviews were implemented (Krueger and Casey, 2000). A listing of traits required for the Athletic Director role were collected through an inductive approach. Answers to series of follow-up questions provided the in-depth details of each behavior mentioned in the initial response. A series of structured questions-with each intended to be representative of each of the six RLSS constructs to confirm the construct validity for the current research-were implemented utilizing a deductive approach. A classical content analysis was applied to address the research question. A holistic coding approach was taken in reviewing the participants’ initial descriptions to identify types of traits associated with the Athletic Director role. A descriptive open-coding process was utilized to carefully code the data line-by-line to capture the overall meaning intended. A constant comparison analysis was conducted to systematically condense data into codes and then to develop themes. As a result, the following themes emerged as the leadership traits required for the intercollegiate Athletic Director position: (a) communicator, (b) driven, (c) personable, (d) poised, (e) principled, (f) self-aware, (g) skilled, and (h) visionary. Recommendations for future research and practical implications are offered.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Numerous researchers have examined preferred sport leadership behaviors from both the coach and athlete perspectives (Beam, Serwatka, & Wilson, 2004; Chelladurai, & Carron, 1983; Freakley, Czech, Harris, & Burdette, 2012; Turman, 2013; Weinburg, & Gould, 2010). However, there is limited research in student-athlete personality dispositions and how those might influence student-athlete perceptions of preferred leadership behaviors. The purpose of the present study was to examine views of leadership in light of certain personality dispositions. This research examined the potential influence of optimism (Abramson, et al, 2000) on qualitative descriptions of preferred leadership behaviors using the Revised Leadership Scale for Sport (Zhang, & Jensen, 1998) to structure the interview questions. 106 NCAA Division I studentathletes in a southeastern university completed the Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R), the results of which were split into three groups: low optimists, middle optimists, and high optimists. The low and high groups of student-athletes were considered for the qualitative interview. There were several similarities between the two groups regarding instructive behavior, feedback behavior, relatability, coach traits, and situational actions, but there are also several differences between the two groups in how the student-athletes prefer their coach to approach them. These differences are highlighted best in the category Reactive Behaviors with the high optimistic theme Encourages implying preference for a coach to focus on present emotions in order to attain future success while the low optimistic theme Reassures Athlete of Ability implies the 2 preference for a coach to focus on past successes in order to attain success in the present. The category Coach Orientation (relationship- v results/task-focused) was much more convoluted than expected following past research. All four categories and emergent themes are described in full. The results reveal a deep difference in individual student-athlete perspective according to optimism levels and potential future research in discussed further

Book excerpt: The major purpose of this study was to assess the impact of leadership style on service quality in intercollegiate athletics. Specifically, the study examined the relationship between the athletic directors' transformational leadership and service quality as perceived by the student athletes via the organizational outcomes including organizational citizenship behavior, organizational commitment, and job satisfaction. To accomplish this purpose, two web-based surveys were utilized to collect data from 927 head coaches and 1,064 student athletes from 53 institutions of the major five conferences in the NCAA during the 2005-06 academic year. The final response rate from the head coaches was 19% (175/927), and from the student athletes was 25% (271/1064). The instrument included basic demographic information, a nine-item to measure the athletic directors' transformational leadership (Bass, 1985a), a twelve-item measure to assess head coaches' organizational citizenship behavior (Smith, Organ, & Near, 1983), a six-item measure to capture head coaches' affective commitment (Meyer & Allen, 1997), a three-item measure to assess head coaches' overall job satisfaction (Cammann, Fichman, Jenkins, & Klesh, 1983), and a fourteen-item measure to assess student athletes' perceived service quality (Harris, 2002). The descriptive data revealed that the athletic directors' charismatic leadership, one dimension of transformational leadership, was the prominent factor, as perceived by the head coaches. Further, the student athletes perceived responsiveness and empathy as the prominent dimensions of service quality. Results from the SEM indicated that the overall athletic directors' transformational leadership was correlated to all organizational outcomes. In the relationship between the transformational leadership and service quality via the organizational outcomes, generalized compliance mediated the relationship between the transformational leadership and service quality.
