Book excerpt: This study investigates the impacts of four advanced coordination mechanisms on supply chain performance under different operational and environmental conditions. Compared with the traditional supply chain system, consignment, two variants of vendor managed inventory (VMI I, VMI II) systems, and collaborative planning, forecasting and replenishment (CPFR) are considered to be advanced coordination mechanisms. They have been advocated in the past due to the efficiency that they may bring through joint decision making and information sharing, which may ultimately result in improved supply chain performance. Analytical modeling based on cost minimization and profit maximization problems is first applied to make the direct comparison of coordination mechanisms with the traditional system. In order to conduct additional sophisticated analyses, this study applies simulation modeling based on time-phased operations, as in materials requirements planning (MRP) systems. A two-stage supply chain system, with a single buyer and a supplier, is considered and it incorporates multiple steps of operations including forecasting, replenishment, inventory management, production, and transportation. The simulation models consider six operational and environmental factors: coordination mechanism, information sharing, demand pattern, lead time, production capacity, and cost structure. The performance of each supply chain system is evaluated in terms of service levels, bullwhip effect, and profits of the buyer, the supplier, and the whole supply chain. The outcomes of simulation runs are statistically analyzed by comprehensively using multi-variate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The simulation results generally support the widely held view that more advanced coordination mechanisms have greater supply chain profit than less advanced ones. On the other hand, advanced coordination mechanisms like CPFR do not necessarily improve customer service level and bullwhip effect. VMI I was found to result in good performance in terms of supplier's service level (fill rate) and bullwhip effect. Information sharing does not only increase the supply chain profit, but also is required for the coordination mechanisms to achieve improved performance. Further properties of coordination mechanisms are analyzed and discussed.

Over the past decade, much research effort has been devoted to exploring the detailed mechanisms for achieving supply chain coordination under uncertainty, generating many fruitful analytical and empirical results. Despite the abundance of research results, there is an absence of a comprehensive reference source that provides state-of-the-art findings on both theoretical and applied research on the subject. In addition, with the advance of knowledge and technologies, many new topics on supply chain coordination under uncertainty have appeared in recent years. This handbook extensively examines supply chain coordination challenges with a focal point on discovering innovative measures that can help tackle the existing and emerging challenges. The book is organized into five parts, which include chapters on innovative analytical models for coordination, channel power and bargaining, technological advancements and applications, empirical analysis, cases studies and review. This handbook provides new empirical and analytical results with precious insights, which will not only help supply chain agents to understand more about the latest measures for supply chain coordination under uncertainty, but also help practitioners and researchers to know how to improve supply chain performance based on innovative methods.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years, we have seen that products manufactured and the supply base of many manufacturers have become more complex. The reasons for the increase in complexity are many. Prominent ones are (a) advances in manufacturing technology; (b) customers' demand for new and improved product functionality; and (c) manufacturers' need to differentiate themselves from their competitors. The resulting increase in complexity can however have negative implications on the performance of the supply chain. As products and supply bases become more complex, the task of managing these complexities and achieving the desired results becomes more challenging. Inability to manage these complexities results in lower performance throughout the supply chain. Thus, we can say that product complexity and supply base complexity are both "necessary evils". Manufacturing literature has recognized that product complexity can have negative effects on plant performance. Emerging studies have explored the negative impacts of product complexity and supply base complexity. However, most of these studies are either conceptual or address narrow aspects of performance, such as delivery performance. In order to bridge this gap, the first aim of this study is to examine the impact of product complexity and supply base complexity on efficiency and responsiveness of the supply chain. Secondly, the study examines the mediating impact of coordination mechanism on the relationship between product complexity / supply base complexity on supply chain performance. Operational coordination and strategic coordination are proposed to be the mediating variables. Thirdly, recognizing the fact that complexity is unavoidable and inevitable in certain circumstances, the study proposes a set of mechanisms that help supply chains improve coordination and thus reduce the negative effects of complexity on supply chain performance. The proposed research model was tested using data collected by a large scale survey of manufacturing firms. The survey was answered by 270 respondents in various managerial roles in purchasing, operations and supply chain functional areas. The study developed and tested measurement instruments for the constructs proposed in the research model. Instruments were tested for reliability and validity using the collected data. The proposed research model was analyzed using Structural Equations Modeling (SEM). The results of the study suggest a negative impact of product complexity and supply base complexity on supply chain performance. The data however shows that product complexity does not have a direct impact on supply chain performance, but rather has an indirect impact through supply base complexity. This indicates that product complexity has an effect on the nature and structure of the supply base. The role of coordination mechanisms (operational and strategic) as a mediator between complexity and supply chain performance was not supported by the data. This indicates a possible moderating role for coordinating mechanisms in this relationship. However, the extent of coordination between supply chain partners was found to be a key determinant of supply chain performance. The role of IT based and non-IT based mechanisms in mitigating the negative impact of complexity on supply chain performance was found to be effective in general. This study thus makes contributions to theory by: (a) developing a research framework that draws from multiple theories to identify the relationships between product complexity, supply base complexity and supply chain performance; (b) identifying the various components of product and supply base complexity in a supply chain system; (c) identifying the strategic and operational roles of coordination mechanisms; and (d) developing and validating measurement instruments that can be employed in future studies. This study can be of interest to supply chain practitioners since it identifies the effects of complexity in the supply chain and identifies mechanisms to manage the effects of complexity in the system. Insights from this study are expected to improve managerial effectiveness in the supply chain.

Book excerpt: With supply chains evolving into complex networks of diverse and independent economic entities, supply chain coordination has emerged as a key management capability for improving overall performance of the network. For long term sustainability, it is important that such networks remain stable with little incentive for players to sever their linkages, especially in supply chains with participative constraints on their members. While topic of coordination has received vast attention from both academia and practitioners, the issues related to network stability have not been addressed adequately. In order to bridge this gap in the literature, we focus on a two tier supply chain network competing with independent producers. The network involves a marketing agent that coordinates activities among the network producers via a price and pro t sharing based coordination mechanism. We develop a (noncooperative) game theoretic model and analyze the impact of the coordination mechanism on stability of the network. In particular, we focus on three factors: cost parameters, number of producers vis- a-vis level of competition, and profit sharing. We derive response functions for the players involved and show that optimal decisions by coordination leads to Nash equilibrium for the supply chain. In addition, we develop structural results to characterize stability of the network. Our results show, that while profit sharing parameter of the coordination mechanism has no impact on network surplus, it has implications for network stability. These results bring out relationship between the factors of interest and provide insights for determining the decision parameters of the coordination mechanism.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "Impacts of Flexibility in Delivery Quantity and Due Date on Supply Chain Dynamics" Submitted by Hing Kai, CHAN for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in December 2006 Supply chain management has been regarded as one of the most important strategies for achieving competitive advantage. More specifically, flexibility seems to be a pre- requisite for conducting and sustaining long-term business. In this connection, coordination with flexibility among supply chain members is of vital importance in a dynamic environment, and this area of study is referred to as supply chain dynamics in the literature. The main motivation of this thesis is to propose inter-organisation coordination mechanisms with flexibility, in terms of delivery quantity and delivery due date, and to study their impacts on the supply chain performance so that the effects of system dynamics could be reduced. Researchers have developed various mathematical programming methodologies for finding the optimal solutions of the problems in related domains. However, one major limitation of these mathematical programming models is the assumption of centralised control, which is virtually impossible. This is because participating members in a supply chain are often owned by different parties and are distributed in nature. It is also difficult, if not impossible, for traditional analytical approaches to take flexibility in terms of some iterative algorithms into consideration. On the other hand, simulation is an effective tool for evaluating the control mechanism for distributed supply chains. In particular, multi-agent based simulation can cater for systems with distributed entities while each of them makes decisions locally. By adopting such a modelling technique, supply chains can be built efficiently. In this respect, a multi-agent based approach is employed in this thesis for analysing the proposed coordination mechanisms. In this thesis, several coordination mechanisms have been developed and simulation experiments have been conducted and tested on various performance measures including total cost, retailer cost, and demand fill rate. In a single product environment, a coordination mechanism which is called early order completion contract with a number of static, but selectable, delivery quantity and due date is employed to reduce the additional cost due to uncertain demand. In addition, the said contract approach is extended so that ranges of pre-defined delivery quantity and due date are presented to the supply chain members. They then can obtain the final decision within the solution space that is subject to the real-time information, rather than the forecast. To improve the generality of the proposed coordination mechanism, it is modified and applied in a multi-product environment. It is also compared with a situation where information sharing is allowed, which is considered as a pseudo- optimal solution. It is found that the proposed mechanism can outperform the tradition stochastic order-up-to policy, and can perform reasonably well against the pseudo- optimal solution. Finally, an adaptive approach is considered in order to further improve the fill rate of the proposed mechanism. The results of this thesis demonstrate the efficacy of adding flexibility in supply chains to counteract system dynamics. The thesis concentrate

Book excerpt: Advances in information technology (IT) have enabled increased information integration across firms, which can potentially lead to higher operational efficiency. In this paper, we build upon prior literature in information systems (IS), supply chain management, economics and strategy to posit that due to inter-firm interdependence and coordination costs, successful information integration requires concomitant improvements in joint planning and synchronized processes across firms. Using a dataset involving 870 firms, we develop a test to assess the potential complementarity between information integration and inter-organizational coordination mechanisms, and find that in tandem with coordination, information integration results in a significant positive impact on operational efficiency. Recognizing that trust is potentially endogenous in inter-organizational relationships, we examine the impact of IT-enabled inter-firm processes that foster trust, and study the impact of trust on the joint impact of information integration and coordination on supply chain performance. Incorporating a correction for self-selection, we find that trust has a positive influence on the joint effect of information integration and coordination. Our findings offer insights regarding organizational processes that need to be in place when firms undertake information integration initiatives.

Book excerpt: With the increasing level of globalization in manufacturing, it is becoming increasingly pertinent to monitor the execution of contractual agreements between buyers and suppliers. These monitoring mechanisms are essential to mitigate risks associated with measurement difficulty, behavioral uncertainty, and environmental uncertainty. Drawing from transaction cost theory and resource dependence theory, this study illustrates frequently applied formal and relational governance mechanisms to ensure a successful supply chain partnership and its effects on various performance measures such as supply chain and innovation performance. Most firms go through three stages of a relationship, namely-contact, contract, and control (Greenberg, Greenberg, and Antonucci, 2012). Once the contact and contract stage of the relationship is established, it is crucial to monitor the execution of these contractual obligations. This monitoring is essential to mitigate risks associated with post-contractual opportunistic behavior. We validated formal and relational mechanisms in the supply chain context to propose effective management of contractual obligations. Given the widening focus on environmental sustainability in manufacturing, this study investigated the mediating effect of environmental regulations on formal and relational governance mechanisms and their impact on environmental performance. Using a sample of 200 North American manufacturing firms, this study found partial support for the effects of formal and relational mechanisms on performance measures. The findings in this study did not find support for a significant relationship between formal governance and supply chain performance measures of the firms. However, there was partial support for the relationship between formal governance mechanisms and innovative capabilities of firms. The results also suggest partial support for the relationship between relational governance mechanisms and supply chain performance, and innovative capabilities of the firm. Environmental governance mediated the relationship between contingency practices and environmental performance of the firm. Relational norms did not directly impact environmental governance practices. Relational mechanisms like shared values and loyalty improved environmental performance of the firm. This should enable firms to have a better understanding of how suppliers respond differently to formal and informal aspects of a relationship.

Since the entities in a supply chain work usually independently each from the other, it is of crucial importance to develop coordination mechanisms so that they can set their objectives together and coordinate their activities to optimize the global system performance. In the first part, some recent optimization models of coordination will be studied and discussed, like capacitated planning models for producers, lot-sizing models for suppliers and the ideal model with cooperation and sharing information from both parties. The second part will consist in extending some of these coordination models to include some additional furthers. For example, some models will be extended to the case where more competing suppliers and producers are involved. Then, a numerical investigation will also be undertaken to compare the different types of anticipation of the producer and their effects, compared to an ideal situation which performs a complete integration of the supplier into the producers model, a situation that is really difficult to apply in the real world. Moreover, the same investigation through the extended models would be undertaken to test and validate these new models. There will be a comparison between three types of models, concerning the effect of incrementing the number of suppliers, the number of producers and the number of both of them. Finally, it will be deduced that the best model for the producer would be having a reactive anticipation of the supplier's model, that is create a closer coordination which will benefit not only the producer but also the supplier. Although it is difficult to implement compared with the other two models and the information about the supplier is difficult to find, it would have a really good improvement on the final cost nearly as good as the ideal model. Related to the multiple parties, it has been concluded that in general terms the best model is the one with an individual producer and supplier. But looking more in detail there are some improvements in the total cost when the producer is divided by smaller producers, having less productivity each one. In that case, and depending on the features of the supplier, it may be some improvements on the total cost of the supply chain.

Despite the abundance of both classical and new research results, there was (until now) no comprehensive reference source that provides the state-of-the-art findings on both theoretical and applied research on the EOQ and its related models. This edited handbook puts together all these interesting works and the respective insights into an edited volume. The handbook contains papers which explore both the deterministic and the stochastic EOQ-model based problems and applications. It is organized into three parts: Part I presents three papers that provide an introduction and review of various EOQ related models. Part II includes four technical analyses on single-echelon EOQ-model based inventory problems. Part III consists of five papers on applications of the EOQ model for multi-echelon supply chain inventory analysis.
