Book excerpt: For a two-dimensional contingency table of probabilities, the concept of symmetry around the main diagonal is well defined. Statistical hypothesis test of symmetry versus positive bias have also been explored. For tables of higher (three or more) dimensions, however, different concepts of symmetry are available. In this study, we consider statistical inference procedures of symmetry in partial tables versus various biases in three-dimensional tables. We find the maximum likelihood estimates of the cell probabilities and the asymptotic distribution of the likelihood ratio test statistic in each case. Simulation studies are used to investigate the sizes and powers of the tests. The methodologies developed are applied on real data sets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exact Statistical Inference for Categorical Data discusses the way asymptotic approaches have been often used in practice to make statistical inference. This book introduces both conditional and unconditional exact approaches for the data in 2 by 2, or 2 by k contingency tables, and is an ideal reference for users who are interested in having the convenience of applying asymptotic approaches, with less computational time. In addition to the existing conditional exact inference, some efficient, unconditional exact approaches could be used in data analysis to improve the performance of the testing procedure. - Demonstrates how exact inference can be used to analyze data in 2 by 2 tables - Discusses the analysis of data in 2 by k tables using exact inference - Explains how exact inference can be used in genetics

Book excerpt: "...the author has packaged an excellent and modern set of topics around the development and use of quantitative models...the author has the capability to work at a more modest level. He does that very effectively in this 2nd Edition... If you need to learn about resampling, this book would be a good place to start." -- Technometrics This work is a practical, table-free introduction to data analysis using the bootstrap, cross-validation, and permutation tests; new to the second edition are several additional examples and a chapter dedicated to regression, data mining techniques, and their limitations. The book’s many exercises, practical data sets, and use of free shareware make it an essential resource for students and teachers, as well as industrial statisticians, consultants, and research professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantifying the User Experience: Practical Statistics for User Research, Second Edition, provides practitioners and researchers with the information they need to confidently quantify, qualify, and justify their data. The book presents a practical guide on how to use statistics to solve common quantitative problems that arise in user research. It addresses questions users face every day, including, Is the current product more usable than our competition? Can we be sure at least 70% of users can complete the task on their first attempt? How long will it take users to purchase products on the website? This book provides a foundation for statistical theories and the best practices needed to apply them. The authors draw on decades of statistical literature from human factors, industrial engineering, and psychology, as well as their own published research, providing both concrete solutions (Excel formulas and links to their own web-calculators), along with an engaging discussion on the statistical reasons why tests work and how to effectively communicate results. Throughout this new edition, users will find updates on standardized usability questionnaires, a new chapter on general linear modeling (correlation, regression, and analysis of variance), with updated examples and case studies throughout. - Completely updated to provide practical guidance on solving usability testing problems with statistics for any project, including those using Six Sigma practices - Includes new and revised information on standardized usability questionnaires - Includes a completely new chapter introducing correlation, regression, and analysis of variance - Shows practitioners which test to use, why they work, and best practices for application, along with easy-to-use Excel formulas and web-calculators for analyzing data - Recommends ways for researchers and practitioners to communicate results to stakeholders in plain English

Book excerpt: This book describes the principles and techniques needed to analyze data that form a multiway contingency table. Wickens discusses the description of association in such data using log-linear and log-multiplicative models and defines how the presence of association is tested using hypotheses of independence and quasi-independence. The application of the procedures to real data is then detailed. This volume does not presuppose prior experience or knowledge of statistics beyond basic courses in fundamentals of probability and statistical inference. It serves as an ideal reference for professionals or as a textbook for graduate or advanced undergraduate students involved in statistics in the social sciences.

Book excerpt: The year 2001 marks the centenary of Biometrika, one of the world's leading academic journals in statistical theory and methodology. In celebration of this, the book brings together two sets of papers from the journal. The first comprises seven specially commissioned articles (authors: D.R. Cox, A.C. Davison, Anthony C. Atkinson and R.A. Bailey, David Oakes, Peter Hall, T.M.F. Smith, and Howell Tong). These articles review the history of the journal and the most important contributions made by appearing in the journal in a number of important areas of statitisical activity, including general theory and methodology, surveys and time sets. In the process the papers describe the general development of statistical science during the twentieth century. The second group of ten papers are a selection of particularly seminal articles form the journal's first hundred years. The book opens with an introduction by the editors Professor D.M. Titterington and Sir David Cox.
