Abstract: ABSTRACT This study aims at gaining more insights on the vocabulary learning process of the low proficient second language learners of pre-intermediate or intermediate level. It is expected that the information obtained can benefit the vocabulary development of the low achievers. As vocabulary range is one of the most important factors that influence the progress of learners' second language learning, the study looks forward to offer suggestions to facilitate learners' vocabulary proficiency. The study examines low achievers' perceptions on vocabulary learning and their pattern of vocabulary learning strategy use especially the use of metacognitive vocabulary learning strategies. The study also intends to compare the effectiveness and preferences of the learners of two kinds of vocabulary learning strategies, social vocabulary learning strategies and cognitive vocabulary learning strategies. Data were collected through two questionnaires, a classroom experiment and semi-structured interviews. The results reveal the learning styles of the low achievers, particularly their intensive use of repetition strategies and their extremely limited use of metacognitive learning strategies to manage their vocabulary learning. Moreover, both social and cognitive vocabulary learning strategies are found to have their strengths and weaknesses to the low achievers. As a result, strategy training is highly recommended for these learners and suggestions on the preparation and the content of strategy training are made. ii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3870695 Subjects: Vocabulary - Study and teaching (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong Learning strategies Underachievers - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes

As successful language learners are found to make good use of vocabulary learning strategies to facilitate the learning process, researchers are interested in investigating whether less competent language learners can also benefit from strategy instruction. The present study aimed to examine the relative effectiveness of and attitudes towards the two vocabulary strategies, namely the keyword method and the context method in L2 vocabulary acquisition among 61 Cantonese-speaking Chinese students in Hong Kong. The study involved two classes of Secondary one students studying in a band one English-medium co-educational secondary school. In the first round of the study, Class A and Class B learnt a list of 10 target vocabulary items. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected through vocabulary pre-tests, post-tests, questionnaires and interviews. In the second round, Class A and Class B swapped the learning conditions to learn another list of 10 target vocabulary items. The same procedures as for the first round were followed. Findings of this study indicated, first, the superiority of the keyword method over the context method in vocabulary retention. Second, the majority of the participants thought the context method was more useful than the keyword method and preferred the former one in the future. To conclude, this study may be of importance in investigating the effectiveness of the two strategies by Chinese learners in the Hong Kong school context, as well as in providing a better understanding of their attitudes towards the two strategies. Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled An Investigation into the Effects of Vocabulary Learning Strategy Training on Secondary School Students in Hong Kong submitted by Lok Ho Sin for the degree of Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics, the University of Hong Kong September, 2007. The research described in this paper investigates the effects of vocabulary learning strategy training on Chinese learners in a local EMI secondary school. A questionnaire adapted from Schmitt's taxonomy (1997) was administered to 68 secondary four students before and after a training program. It was found that students used discovery strategies more often than consolidation strategies. Repetition was used more commonly among learners. Certain mnemonic strategies were seldom used and not perceived as useful. A five-week training program which included five medium to low ranking strategies in terms of frequency of use and perceived usefulness in the questionnaire was carried out in regular class periods. A comparison of scores in the pre-training and the post-training tests in which students' receptive and productive knowledge of vocabulary items was assessed showed the subjects achieved a higher mean score in the post-test. As for the findings of the post training questionnaire, there was also an increase in mean scores and percentages in the frequency of use and perceived usefulness of most of the strategies. More in-depth qualitative data was obtained from individual interviews with six subjects. They expressed difficulties on vocabulary learning and little experience in vocabulary learning strategy training. The majority of them admitted not having made full use of the strategies presented in the training program. Conclusion on whether the training program helped learners learn more effectively could not be drawn in a clear-cut manner considering both the quantitative and qualitative data. Nevertheless, an important implication was that strategy training should be considered in the language classroom as the subjects agreed that receiving strategy training would be beneficial to them. It could raise their awareness of different strategies available and they could use them flexibly according to their learning styles. Recommendations are made for future research to look at the extent to which strategies are used, benefits and drawbacks, effects of explicit vocabulary strategy instruction on young learners, alternatives to enhance autonomous learning through the use of independent learning strategies and teachers' perspective of strategy use and training. Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled The effectiveness of vocabulary learning strategies of Chinese low achievers submitted by Cheung Chok Yee for the degree of Master of Applied Linguistics at the University of Hong Kong September, 2004 The study explores the effect of the Keyword method and the Combined Context method on learning English vocabulary by Chinese low achieving students within a classroom situation. The two methods were compared by using a between-subject approach and a within-subject approach. Eighty F.1 remedial class students participated in the present study and they were divided into 2 groups. Group A students went through all the processes of this study while Group B tried out the Combined Context method only. The present study also aims to explore more about the different practices of the Keyword method. Previous research on second language (L2) vocabulary learned by the Keyword method has primarily involved the use of first language (L1) keywords to learn vocabulary of other languages. The present study employed both L1 and L2 keywords to learn a group of new words. Students learning the Keyword method (Group A) were instructed to learn 20 English words by using 10 L1 keywords and 10 L2 keywords. The results were compared with the results of the Combined Context group (Group B) in which students were taught the same 20 words. Students in Group A were then required to learn another 20 English words with self generated keywords and another 20 words by using the Combined Context method. Questionnaires were distributed to all the subjects to investigate their usual vocabulary learning strategies and their perceived usefulness. Students' feedback on the different learning approaches was reviewed after the experiments. The overall results reveal that students using the Keyword method outperformed the ones using the Combined Context method. Concerning the differences between using L1 and L2 keywords, they did not differ significantly in the immediate and conditions while the use of L2 keywords has shown to be more beneficial to written form recall conditions. No significance difference was found in the results between teacher-supplied keyword and student-generated keyword conditions. The implications of these findings, the limitations and suggestions for further research are discussed. Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled An Investigation on the Effectiveness of the Use of Different Vocabulary Teaching Strategies on Second Language Learners' Vocabulary Acquisition submitted by Evelyn Mui Lai Kuen for the degree of Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics at the University of Hong Kong September 2004 In the present study, the relative effectiveness of the use of the vocabulary notebook strategy and the keyword method on second language learners' vocabulary acquisition were investigated. These effects were examined from two perspectives: learning of concrete words vs. learning of abstract words, and receptive learning vs. productive learning. Twenty-seven Form 4 students at a Hong Kong Chinese Medium Instruction secondary school were trialled on both the vocabulary notebook strategy and keyword method. Cued recall was assessed before, after short-term and long-term delay. The effectiveness of vocabulary acquisition was measured in terms of the participants' test scores and t-tests were adopted to analyze the respective efficacy of the tactics. Also, qualitative data on the participants' perceptions of the two strategies were collected by questionnaire and interviews. The results of the study showed significance differences in all the four areas investigated. The two vocabulary teaching strategies appeared to facilitate the acquisition of FL vocabulary. Generally, they produced better effects on the learning of concrete than that of abstract words, and were found to be more effective with receptive rather than productive learning. The keyword method was shown to be superior to the vocabulary notebook strategy regarding the acquisition of both concrete and abstract words. The participants preferred the use of the keyword method to the vocabulary notebook strategy as the former was considered more interesting and easier to use. In the concluding section of the paper, the limitations and the pedagogical implications of the study are discussed, and suggestions for future research in vocabulary teaching strategies are recommended. Abstract: Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate into the impact of direct instruction on the learning of the strategy of guessing from context and the use of the strategy in coping with unknown words in reading materials among young local ESL learners. In the present study, a naturalistic approach was adopted. A direct instruction programme on the strategy of guessing from context was conducted, as part of the regular English curriculum, in two Primary Three English classrooms in a local average-ability school. Data were collected from the students of these two classes on their perception of their mastery of the strategy before and after the instruction programme through questionnaires. Besides, two achievement tests (the pre-test and post-test) were done to compare the actual performance of students in the use of the strategy before and after the instruction programme. Qualitative data from lesson observation and interviews with both the students and teachers were collected to triangulate with the quantitative data. The findings of the study are found consistent with the past research in that students do benefit from direct instruction in the learning of the strategy of guessing from context. Their metacognitive awareness of the strategy was found greatly enhanced. Yet, the actual performance does not support this conclusion. Besides, the difference in the performance of the two classes points at the factor of different approaches by the two participating teachers. Data from lesson observation and the interview with teachers seem to suggest that the different beliefs of teachers had impacted greatly on the teaching approaches they adopted, which in turn determined the results of the student performance. In view of the above, it is suggested that further studies on the content of direct instruction programmes on reading strategies are worth conducting. Besides, the interplay of various reading cues deserves thorough studies, especially in the local context, with the Chinese students learning English as a second language. Finally, a longitudinal study will facilitate a deeper understanding of the effects of direct instruction on the learning of reading strategies. Abstract: Abstract The education system in Hong Kong has long been widely perceived as examination-oriented, and the teaching and learning of English in secondary schools, like that of many other examination subjects, has become more and more utilitarian. English examination practice books and tutorial classes now flood the market, and spending class time on literature, or language arts, is considered to be a luxury and unpractical by some pragmatic teachers and students. However, the teaching and learning of English involves a lot more than the acquisition of skills and grammar. In this paper, I begin by looking into the current trend of English teaching and learning from both global and local perspectives. I then examine the certificate level English curriculum in Hong Kong and see why teachers use literature and how literature can fit into the curriculum. Three cases of incorporating literature into the certificate level English classroom will be examined and illustrated with some sample activities. The ways the teachers used literature, and the types of literature they used are by no means exhaustive and suitable for every certificate level English classroom, but it is believed that the principles behind the use would be applicable to most other classes of this level as well. ii DOI: 10.5353/th_b2965115 Subjects: Language arts (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong English literature - Study and teaching (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong English language - Study and teaching (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong English teachers - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes High school seniors - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes

There is apparently an urgency to reform our education system to improve the quality of teaching and learning. In addition, the rapid development of Information Technology has brought profound changes to language classrooms. It is generally agreed that Information Communication Technology (ICT) should be an essential element of the English Language Teaching and learning. As part of its curriculum reform process, the Education and Manpower Bureau has launched a series of "Web-based Learning and Teaching Support for Basic Competence Assessments" to empower teaching and learning in 2003. It is aimed at providing teaching and learning support for teachers and students. Teachers may make reference to or use the resources according to students' performance in terms of the basic competencies of the curriculum. The web-based interactive tasks and the classroom activities are designed to help students work towards the learning targets in different strands. Included are some questions to enable teachers to reflect on their teaching and students' learning, together with some multimedia tasks, resources, useful websites and suggestions for improvement which teachers may adopt or adapt to improve students' learning. This study has focused on investigating the effectiveness of the Basic Competence Assessments (BCA) Web-based Learning and Teaching materials in supporting primary students learning English. ICT offers new challenges for language teaching. Hong Kong primary teachers' and students' attitudes towards integrating ICT into the language classroom will also be discussed. The researcher has also examined the factors influencing teachers' attitudes towards ICT in education and its integration into their teaching of English. The data come from lesson observations, reflection forms and teacher and student interviews. The results show that integrating technology into teaching and learning is not easy to achieve. In fact, success largely depends on how teachers used the web-based materials to support teaching and learning, their attitudes towards ICT in teaching and the quality of the materials. As teachers implement technology into the classroom, theirexpectations of the role of technology in teaching and learning will undoubtedly change. Administrators and schools need to continually support teachers in their quest to discover how technology can best enhance children's learning.
