Book excerpt: To achieve seismic exploration goals, conventional seismic data processing methods need subsurface information (for example velocity distribution and earth structure), which is generally inaccessible for geologically complex regions. Seismic algorithms derived from inverse scattering series (ISS) do not require subsurface information, but they directly invert seismic data (with a reference medium) order by order for achieving seismic processing objectives. The ISS internal multiple attenuator (IMA) is data-driven and uses a constant reference velocity (water speed for marine cases, and p-wave and s-wave velocities for land cases) to accurately predict all leading order internal multiples' arrival time. However, in the land application of ISS IMA, it is hard to choose a simple constant elastic medium as the reference, due to the heterogeneous and complicated properties in near surface layer. This dissertation presents research on the ISS IMA’s sensitivity to the reference velocity in land cases. An analytical calculation of the ISS IMA is performed for a 1D layered earth with multi-component PP, PS, SP and SS (P denotes compressional wave, and S denotes shear wave) data at both normal and non-normal incidence. The computation demonstrates that the prediction of 1D ISS IMA is independent of the chosen P and S reference velocities. Numerical tests on the 1D ISS IMA algorithm are done for different types of media to demonstrate its value for land applications. The leading order imaging subseries (LOIS) and higher order imaging subseries (HOIS) methods for the one-parameter (velocity variation only) case can fail for an acoustic medium with both velocity and density variation. Hence, a multi-parameter LOIS imaging algorithm is derived and tested in this dissertation to extend the one-parameter imaging algorithms to a 1D two-parameter (velocity and density) acoustic medium, and to a more complete earth model, eventually. The calculation of the ISS third order term for a 1D acoustic medium leads to the identification of the two-parameter LOIS algorithm, and justifies the multi-parameter LOIS and HOIS imaging conjectures. Analytical and synthetic tests are done for the two-parameter LOIS and HOIS algorithms to demonstrate their different imaging capability: HOIS is better than LOIS in locating subsurface interfaces for an acoustic medium with larger contrast and error duration in velocity and density. The multi-parameter LOIS and HOIS imaging algorithms are capable of outputting subsurface structure without using a velocity model.

Book excerpt: The objective of seismic exploration is to determine the physical properties of the Earth's subsurface in order to detect potential hydrocarbon accumulations. The inverse scattering series (ISS) is a multi-dimensional direct method that can perform all of the tasks associated with inversion only using the measured data and a chosen reference medium. This is achieved in stages using task-specific subseries that accomplish: (1) free-surface multiple removal; (2) internal multiple removal; (3) depth imaging; and (4) parameter estimation. This dissertation provides deeper comprehension of current ISS strengths and shortcomings for internal multiple removal, and caveats and understanding of ISS depth imaging and parameter estimation, which can be used to progress and develop further capability as part of a strategy to address the current outstanding challenges in exploration seismology. This dissertation is composed of three topics. The first topic extends the capability of the current ISS internal multiple attenuation algorithm by addressing one of its shortcomings. The current ISS internal multiple attenuator has provided added-value compared to other demultiple methods for complex media where multiple generators are not easy or able to be identified. However, this single term has its own strengths and limitations. Under certain circumstances, spurious events can be produced by the ISS leading-order attenuator. In this dissertation, higher-order terms in the ISS that address the spurious events generation from the leading-order attenuator are identified. Adding the higher-order terms to the current algorithm provides a more capable ISS internal multiple attenuation algorithm, which retains the benefit of the original algorithm and addresses the shortcoming due to spurious events. This work is part of the strategy to provide further capability for internal multiple attenuation in onshore or complex offshore exploration areas. The second project focuses on the generation and prediction of internal multiples in thin-layer models. A new method (named the reflector spectrum) based on the reflectivity forward modeling is presented to illustrate where internal multiples are generated in thin layers. The modeling of sub-resolution internal multiples leads to the concept of effective primaries. By comparing the modeling and prediction of internal multiples, it is shown that sub-resolution internal multiples cannot be predicted by the ISS internal multiple attenuator and internal multiples generated by resolvable reflectors can be accommodated by the ISS method. The third topic in the dissertation studies and evaluates the impact of matching or mismatching between the earth model type (e.g., acoustic, elastic, isotropic, anisotropic earth) that generates the data and the assumed model type behind the processing methods for ISS depth imaging and parameter estimation. Numerical results show that for ISS depth imaging and inversion applications, when the model type assumed in the processing algorithm is less complicated than the model type that generates the data, there are errors in the results. The tests and conclusions provide a caveat concerning the consequences of a model mismatch between the model type that generates the data and the model type assumed in processing methods and motivate the need to develop model-type independent ISS imaging methods.

Book excerpt: This book highlights the latest developments on the numerical methods for inverse scattering problems associated with acoustic, electromagnetic, and elastic waves. Inverse scattering problems are concerned with identifying unknown or inaccessible objects by wave probing data, which makes possible many industrial and engineering applications including radar and sonar, medical imaging, nondestructive testing, remote sensing, and geophysical exploration. The mathematical study of inverse scattering problems is an active field of research. This book presents a comprehensive and unified mathematical treatment of various inverse scattering problems mainly from a numerical reconstruction perspective. It highlights the collaborative research outputs by the two groups of the authors yet surveys and reviews many existing results by global researchers in the literature. The book consists of three parts respectively corresponding to the studies on acoustic, electromagnetic, and elastic scattering problems. In each part, the authors start with in-depth theoretical and computational treatments of the forward scattering problems and then discuss various numerical reconstruction schemes for the associated inverse scattering problems in different scenarios of practical interest. In addition, the authors provide an overview of the existing results in the literature by other researchers. This book can serve as a handy reference for researchers or practitioners who are working on or implementing inverse scattering methods. It can also serve as a graduate textbook for research students who are interested in working on numerical algorithms for inverse scattering problems.

Book excerpt: In this thesis we further develop concepts in inverse scattering, which enable higher resolution imaging with data from dense networks and arrays. We apply the new methods to studies of the crust beneath south Tibet and the core-mantle boundary (CMB) region beneath Central America and East Asia. First, we develop a new method, which we call passive source reverse time migration (RTM), for subsurface imaging with teleseismic array data. Multi-component array data are first propagated backward by solving the elastic wave equation. After polarization separation, a modified cross-correlation imaging condition between P and S wave constitutes is applied to obtain an inverse scattering transform. From synthetic experiments it is evident that for complex geological structures RTM is superior to traditional receiver functions analysis, such as common conversion point (CCP) stacking. Two preprocessing steps are required for RTM application on sparsely sampled teleseismic dataset: source normalization and trace interpolation. The source radiation pattern, especially the polarity of traces, is corrected by multi-channel cross-correlation technique. The unknown source signature is then estimated by principle component analysis and deconvolved from raw data by Wiener deconvolution. Curvelet interpolation with sparsity promotion is employed to interpolate irregularly and sparsely sampled traces into regular and dense grids. Synthetic and real data examples demonstrate that for typical teleseismic acquisition geometry, with 50% to 85% missing traces, the curvelet-based interpolation works remarkably well. The application on Hi-CLIMB array data in Tibetan plateau reveals clear and continuous Moho discontinuity at the depth of about 70 km, as well as fine crustal structures. Second, we use a high-frequency approximation of inverse scattering, generalized Radon transform (GRT), to probe the lowermost mantle beneath Central America and East Asia. Inverse scattering of about 130,000 ScS traces and 120,000 SKKS traces reveals multiple reflectors above the conventional D" region. This result is inconsistent with expectations from a pure thermal response of a single isochemical post-perovskite transition but can be explained with post-perovskite transitions in differentiated slab materials. Our results imply that the lowennost mantle is more complex than hitherto thought and that the presence of interfaces and compositional heterogeneity beyond the D" region.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this text is to present the theory and mathematics of inverse scattering, in a simple way, to the many researchers and professionals who use it in their everyday research. While applications range across a broad spectrum of disciplines, examples in this text will focus primarly, but not exclusively, on acoustics. The text will be especially valuable for those applied workers who would like to delve more deeply into the fundamentally mathematical character of the subject matter.Practitioners in this field comprise applied physicists, engineers, and technologists, whereas the theory is almost entirely in the domain of abstract mathematics. This gulf between the two, if bridged, can only lead to improvement in the level of scholarship in this highly important discipline. This is the book's primary focus.

Book excerpt: Seismic waves are one of the standard diagnostic tools used to determine the mechanical parameters (volume density of mass, compressibility, elastic stiffness) in the interior of the earth and the geometry of subsurface structures. There is increasing evidence that in the interpretation of seismic data - especially shear-wave data - the influence of anisotropy must be taken into account. This volume presents a method to compute the seismic waves that are generated by an impulsive source in a stratified anisotropic medium. Although written with the seismic applications in mind, the method that is developed is not limited to solid-earth geophysics. In fact, the methods discussed in this monograph are applicable wherever waves propagate in stratified, anisotropic media. The standard approach to this problem is to employ Fourier transformations with respect to time and with respect to the horizontal spatial coordinates. To obtain numerical results, the relevant inverse transformations then have to be evaluated numerically. In this monograph the problem is, in contrast to the standard approach, solved by applying the Cagniard-de Hoop method and by representing the wave field as a sum of generalized rays. With this method, the computational results can be obtained relatively easily with any degree of accuracy, and with considerably less computation time. For completeness, analysis of acoustic waves in stratified isotropic media is included. Furthermore, for large horizontal or vertical source-receiver separations very efficient approximations are derived. Several examples and applications are given.
