Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introductory Lecture to the Course of Anatomy and Physiology, in Rutgers Medical College, New-York: Delivered, November 11, 1826 On the present occasion, we shall content our selves with laying before you a general sketch of the rise, progress, decline, and decay of the human body, preparatory to some considerations relative to the practical study of our subject, which we are solicitous to urge upon the atten tion of society at large. We shall then conclude by especially addressing those who are to be the immediate objects of our care. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Lecture Delivered in the Philadelphia School of Anatomy: October 17th, 1859 It required many thousands of years for the inventive faculty of man to exchange the sickle, which at each circling sweep felled but a hand-grasp, for the gigantic reaper before whose thundering march the nodding grain is levelled as by a tornado's breath. It was by slow and almost imperceptible degrees, although its me tallic relations had long been known, that the fire of heaven was trained to fly to the remote bounds of the earth and articulate the thoughts of men. It was a long and arduous task, although mankind was familiar with both the elasticity of aqueous vapor and the philosophy of the lever, before they were SO combined and utilized as to navigate our rivers, traverse the ocean, impel the loom, rush like comets over our iron ways, dragging in a single train a colony, or an army, larger than those which Phoe nicia planted, or by which Cortes conquered, ploughing the earth, draining our mines, wielding the press, blowing the flames of the furnace, or drowning out the fires which consume a city. It was a period of considerable duration which marked the interval when men embodied their crude religious conceptions in images of wood and stone, and those superb triumphs of genius which adorn the depositories of Roman and Florentine art. And so we might continue to gather illustrations from every field of science or art, all conspiring to Show that true knowledge, though Simple in itself, is reached with difficulty, from the imperfection of the instruments with which we operate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lecture Introductory to a Course on Anatomy, Physiology, &C: Delivered Before His Class, November 21st, 1834 The early period of anatomy was as obscure and unsatisfactory as that of physiology. The languages of the ancients discover a knowledge of the principal bones and processes, and of the principal viscera. They saw the bones bleach ing on the battle-field, and beheld many a dis embowelled warrior. They saw the viscera of the victims they sacrificed, but their knowledge was as might be presumed, superficial and scant. Anatomy as a science, was first cultivated by the Greeks.* Homer says, that the stone which Dio mede threw at zeneas, not only broke the bone of the thigh, but tore the ligaments of the aceta bulumql Ulysses determined to strike the Cy clops, where the liver adheres to the diaphragm, and Merion was wounded in one of the large veins which return the blood to the heart. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introductory Lecture to the Winter Course of Anatomy, in the Philadelphia School of Anatomy, Delivered on Monday Evening: November 2d, 1840 Medicine implies an acquaintance with Anatomy; Physiology or the science of life; Pathology, or the investigation of the effects of disease upon the body; Surgery, at once a science and an art; Obstetrics, that most delicate branch of our profession, m which the life of both mother and offspring are often jeoparded by unforseen accidents; and I am sorry to say, 1n many instances by the culpable 1gnorance of the practitioner. Materia Medica, or a knowledge of the various medicinal substances, animal, vegetable and mineral, with their natural charac ters and properties, as well as their application to practice; and Che mistry, which, by unfolding the laws of the combinations of matter, as far as those laws are discovered, not only throws light upon the nature of remedial agents, but also developes many principles and powers of the earth on which we dwell, and the atmosphe1e which we breathe, whose influence on the body of man, whether 1n health or disease, 1s almost incalculable. Over this wide field the student must not travel hastily, but with the careful, untiring diligence of an explorer; and with every one of these branches of knowledge he must obtain at least a tolerable acquaintance, bef01e he can hon01ably ofier himself to his fellow-men as qualified to take the charge of their health and their lives. But it has never been supposed that all of these branches are equally useful or important to the physician, or that the same degree of attention is due to each of them from the student; and it is very certain that. Some of them may be mastered with far less expenditure of toil and study than others. If any one of them deserves to be called more important than all the others, it is Anatomy and without doubt, this department is more strictly and properly a science; more in teresting in itself and in its relative bearing upon other branches of knowledge; more fully calculated to train and discipline the mind of the student to quick perception and acute observation; and in a word, more completely essential to the formation of those habits of thought, and that character of close and studious investigation, which are so invaluable to the medical practitioner, than any of them. Anatomy is the basis of the pyramid of medicine, - and according to the strength and extent with which this only sure foundation is laid, will be the firmness and durability of the superstructuie He that erects the fabric of a medical practice upon any other basis, builds his house upon the sands, and although the arts of a bold and shameless empiricism may gain him a temporary reputation; although he may succeed for a time, by practising upon the natural credulity of his fellows, yet the imposture will one day prove his ruin; for when the rains descend, and the winds blow, and the floods come, his baseless fabric must fall, and great will be the fall thereof. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture Introductory to the Course of Anatomy and Physiology, in Rutgers Medical College: Delivered on Friday, Nov. 2, 1827 Under such impressions do we at present address you we believe that the profession of Medicine is succeptible of a degree of improvement equal to the highest wishes of society; we believe the human mind adequate to the task of grasping all the knowledge necessary for the deduction of principles capable of guiding us in every emergency, and we feel assured by the past, that the day will come, when the science of Me dioine will prove competent to the relief of all our maladies. But before these desirable results can be hoped for, a vast aggregate of ignorance and prejudice is to be removed: some of the most cherished and long established dogmas are to be set aside, and errors which have passsed into general accep tance must be exposed in the clear light of demonstration to the withering influence of contempt.
