Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Local History and Antiquities It is difficult to decide how to write the names of men and places. Colchester to a student of Roman things has not the significance of Camulodunum. Yet it has seemed better to give modern names throughout, for the place is the same, and the general student profits though the expert may be annoyed. Similarly common sense dictates that one should write Beauchamp and Odell, though in Domesday Book these appear as Belcamp and Wadehelle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Antiquities: With Some Account of the of Thes Neighbourhood The town of Ballyshannon, though now suffering from the chilling effects of a diminished trade and a decreased population, can at least boast of its superior antiquity, and its many historical associations. To collect these scattered memorials of bygone times, and present in a connected and readable form, an epitome of all that relates to our town, past and present, is the aim and object of the following pages. In their preparation no pains have been spared to obtain the best and most accurate information, and I have carefully consulted many manuscripts hitherto unpublished. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Homeland Prehistoric Antiquities: And How to Study Them Almost all the books dealing with the science of prehistoric archaeology, are works for the advanced student, who is assumed to be familiar with the more elementary portions of the subject. This assumption is not always justified. As a consequence, in his early days of collecting specimens of the handiwork of prehistoric man, the author obtained little help from books and was compelled to rely on his own observa tions. The following pages have been written at the suggestion of Mr. Prescott Row, of the Homeland Association, in the hope that they may supply the needs of the beginner, and enable him to discriminate between stones shaped by natural forces and those chipped by man, and to classify them according to present knowledge. Reference is also made to early track ways, barrows, pottery, flint-mining, megalithic remains, dwellings and camps. In the glossary an attempt has been made to define some of the loosely-applied technical terms, and to give such information as will enable the reader to comprehend more advanced books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History, Antiquities,& Geology, of Bacton, in Norfolk The following pages have been drawn up in compliance with the suggestions of many friends, who wished to be possessed of a succinct and authentic history of the village of Bacton to which they refer. This history the writer has endeavoured to give, as far as time and materials would allow. The notices of Bacton and the Priory of Broomholme hitherto published have been somewhat beyond the reach of many individuals, being generally distributed through various voluminous and expensive works. From these works the writer has gleaned whatever appears to be of importance; and these gleanings, combined with original materials, he trusts, will be useful in bringing further into public notice a village, hitherto but little known, and antiquities but too little valued. The Geology of this district has been glanced at but partially by Mr. Lyell; and to the statements of that gentleman the writer feels happy in being able to make some interesting additions, which he hopes may, at a future period, serve as the basis of a more extended work. The illustrations are all original, and were drawn expressly for this work. The sketch of the Section of Cliffs from Happisburgh to Trimmingham is given to show the immediate connection of the chalk with the superimposed strata; evidencing the probability of its being the immediate bed on which the strata rests.
