Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Greek Reader, Selected Chiefly From Jacobs' Greek Reader, Adapted to Bullions' Greek Grammar: With an Introduction on the Idioms of the Greek Language, Notes, Critical and Explanatory, and an Improved Lexicon In the numerous references to the Grammar, and to the Introduction on Greek Idioms at the foot of each page, the diligent student will find more important and useful aid than could be furnished by many pages of Notes. With ordinary attention to these he can'hardly fail to acquire a thorough knowledge of the principles Of the language in a comparative ly short time, and be prepared to prosecute his future course with more advantage and pleasure. In t'; e references, at the foot of each page, those preceded by a section mark refer to the Section in the Grammar and its subdivisions indicated. In those not preceded by such a mark the first number directs to the corresponding number in the Introduction, and the second to the example under that number. Thus for example, 99. 1, directs to the example, 7-6 adv poms dep'uph, page 16, and shows how the possessive pronoun is to be rendered in such phrases. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Greek Grammar The present work is a revised and enlarged edition of the Greek Grammar published in 1879, which was itself a revised and enlarged edition of the Elementary Greek Grammar of only 235 pages published in 1870. I trust that no one will infer from this repeated increase in the size of the book that I attribute ever increasing importance to the study of formal grammar in school. On the con trary, the growth of the book has come from a more decided opinion that the amount of grammar which should be learned by rote is exceedingly small compared with that which every real student of the Classics must learn in a very dif ferent way. When it was thought that a pupil must first learn his Latin and Greek Grammars and then learn to read Latin and Greek, it was essential to reduce a school grammar to its least possible dimensions. Now when a more sensible system leaves most of the details of grammar to be learned by the study of special points which arise in reading or writing, the case is entirely different; and few good teachers or good students are any longer grateful for a small grammar, which must soon be discarded as the horizon widens and new questions press for an answer. The forms of a language and the essential principles of its construction must be learned in the old-fashioned way, when the memory is vigorous and retentive, but, these once mastered, the true time to teach each principle of grammar is the moment when the pupil meets with it in his studies, and no grammar which is not thus practically illustrated ever becomes a living reality to the student. But it is not enough for a learner merely to meet each con struction or form ln isolated instances; for he may do this repeatedly, and yet know little of the general principle which the single example partially illustrates. Men saw apples fall and the moon and planets roll ages before the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Greek Grammar for the Use of High Schools and Universities But the great labour of his life lies before the world in his grammati cal works; which, from a narrow beginning, have grown up into a wide and comprehensive system. His first work appeared, as mentioned above, in 1792, and was little more than an outline of the Greek acci dence. In the subsequent editions he continued to interweave the results of his investigations; until the fourth ed itiou assumed the character of a more complete and scientific treatise of Greek grammar. In this form it remained without any essential change of plan, but not without impor tant additions and improvements, until the publication of the twelfth edition in 1826. In the mean time he had published at an early period an abstract of this work, made from the sixth edition, for the use of lower schools and younger pupils, under the title of sow-granada. This smaller Grammar reached its eighth editition in 1826, during the author's life-time; and the ninth edition of it was issued in 1831, since his de cease. This is the work formerly translated and published in this coun try, under the name of Buttmann's Grammar; of which it is not too much to say, that it disappointed the expectations of our more advanced scholars by its incompleteness and want of detail; while it was found not to answer among us the purposes of early instruction, because it already presupposes a certain amount of elementary philological knowledge on the part of the pupil. The truth is, that the work was adapted to amodo of instruction entirely different from that prevalent in this country; and was intended rather as a manual to guide the oral instructions and explanations of school-teachers in Germany, than as a book from which the pupil should himselfiderive an acquaintance with the elements of Greek grammar. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Greek Grammar This work is an abridgment of the author's Greek Grammar which was published in 1879 in London and in Boston, us. The larger work was written primarily for the higher classes of classical schools, in the hope that it might supply the wants (for both study and refer ence) of even the best scholars until the beginning of their university studies. At the same time, it was thought that the parts in larger type with the paradigms could be used to advantage even with beginners in Greek. The author's experience with a much smaller grammar in the United States had shown that nearly all classical teachers there preferred to use the same text-book in all their classes, and that the grammar with which a boy began his study of Greek and Latin at school was generally carried to college, and was not always discarded even there. It is a Greek Grammar for Beginners. The author has studiously avoided the insertion of a solitary word not absolutely essential. Such a book has been, for many years, a great desideratum - a book which shall contain no notes, remarks, observations, in Short, to be marked by a teacher for omission, but only essential and elementary principles and paradigms, Which are to be thoroughly memorized by the pupil, Without any ex ception whatever. The Grammar is designed to be committed to memory, from cover to cover, the first time the pupil goes over it. It is not, therefore, a Grammar of reference - the world is full of such. It is a schoolboy's book, and intended for a Schoolboy's use. Whether the author has succeeded in perfecting his Wishes, and in giving expression to his many years' experience in teaching Greek, he leaves the public to decide. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook was conceived and written under the authors’ conviction that the feature of Greek grammar that lends itself most readily to understanding and discussion is syntax, especially the syntax of the verb and that such understanding has been unnecessarily complicated by the traditional use of a terminology derived more from the study of the Latin verb than the Greek. The principal feature of the Greek verb is no longer presented as that of “tense,” a term that conflates and confuses questions of the time of an action relative to the act of speaking with ways of representing an action in itself. Rather, emphasis is placed on the latter feature, the aspect of a verb, both as a means of organizing the many forms that the verb can take and as a means of making comparatively simple sense of the multiplicity of syntactical rules that govern its use. Volume One features twenty Lessons presenting basic Greek Grammar in a manner facilitating the early introduction of substantial and philosophically rich passages from Heraclitus Aeschylus, Xenophon, Aristotle, Euclid and especially Plato, each containing vocabulary, discussion and exercises to aid in retention and reinforcement. Volume Two contains extended readings, with grammatical and vocabulary notes, from Plato and Aristotle, including the complete dialogue Meno, as well as Appendices and comprehensive Vocabulary lists. The two most distinctive Lessons in the text occur close to the beginning. Lesson Four presents the six features that determine any Greek verb—aspect (progressive, aorist or simple, perfect), “tense” (past, present, future), mood, voice, person, number)—through a discussion that is carried out mostly in English. At the end of the lesson, students are in possession of all the conceptual elements upon which the syntax of the Greek verb is based. Lesson Five presents the Progressive System of the regular verb in all of its moods and voices. The burden of paradigms on the memory is lightened by means of an emphasis on analysis into a verb’s formative elements and through the use of linguistic rules that show how seemingly diverse forms arise from common origins. This early presentation of the non-indicative moods allows the student to appreciate the verb as a conveyer, not only of facts, but of the speaker’s doubts, wishes, speculations and feelings as well.
