Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Life Insurance in the United States to 1870: With an Introduction to Its Development Abroad In the early history Of life insurance four primary stages of development may be distinguished. The first of these may be called the period Of experiment. It extends from the earliest beginnings down to the year 1700. During this time the prac tice Of keeping mortality records originated, and the funda mental laws Of probability were evolved and applied to the valuation of human life. Underwriting was done by indivi duals, and toward the end Of the period some distribution Of risk was accomplished by the insurers, since it became custom ary to accept but a small portion of each one of a number of separate hazards. The second stage may be designated the speculative assessment period.' It extends from 1700 to 1721, and is distinguished by the fact that assessment associations Of a highly speculative nature were formed for effecting life insurance. The third period, from 1721 to 1760, may be termed the era of scientific progress, since it is characterized by the progress made in the science of life contingencies. The fourth and last epoch, from 1760 to 1800, is One in which the advent of modern life insurance occurred. It was during this time that insurance for the whole of life on an annual level premium basis, and with a reserve fund to meet liabilities in creasing with advancing age, was put into practical operation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the New-York Life Insurance Company, 1895-1905: Including a Résumé of the History of the Previous Fifty Years This work, including the Introduction by the late President of the Com pany was completed substantially as it now stands immediately after the Diamond J'ubilee in May, 1905. The Legislative investigation of life insurance companies was begun soon afterward, and publication was delayed in order to record the outcome. So many changes have since taken place, both in the management of the new-york life and in the conditions under which life companies organized in this State must now work, that it is plain we are entering upon a new era in Life Insurance. The history of these months of transition cannot yet be written with justice either to companies or to individuals. It has therefore been determined to print this volume as originally written, adding only the Annual Report for the year 1905, the revised form of the Company's by-laws, and the balance sheet prepared by chartered and certified a-c countants as of December 31, 1905, with their certificate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life insurance—the promise of an insurer to pay a sum upon a person's death in exchange for a regular premium—is a bizarre enterprise. How can we monetize human life? Should we? What statistics do we use, what assumptions do we make, and what behavioral factors do we consider? First published in 1979, Morals and Markets Is a pathbreaking study exploring the development of life insurance in the United States. Viviana A. Rotman Zelizer combines economic history and a sociological perspective to advance a novel interpretation of the life insurance industry. The book pioneered a cultural approach to the analysis of morally controversial markets. Zelizer begins in the mid-nineteenth century with the rise of the life insurance industry, a contentious chapter in the history of American business. Life insurance was stigmatized at first, denounced in newspapers and condemned by religious leaders as an immoral and sacrilegious gamble on human life. Over time, the business became a widely praised arrangement to secure a family's future. How did life insurance overcome cultural barriers? As Zelizer shows, the evolution of the industry in the United States matched evolving attitudes toward death, money, family relations, property, and personal legacy.
